Good for Pry, he deserves a shot. But as other have mentioned, there are concerns now…recruits flipping, other coaches joining him at VT, and (although less likely) some current players portaling to VT.
Terry Smith leaving to be on a Pry HC VT staff would probably hurt our recruiting more than the losing Pry.
Terrible hire for VT, they've really become a mediocre program.

Rough loss for us, Pry was a stable and solid DC for many years.

John Scott probably leaves with him, which is a major bummer + who he might take with him?

Franklin has big boy money now, he needs to make a grand slam hire - especially with how bad his offenses have been.
These types of replacements are never easy. Most would have graded Ryan Day's hires better than Michigan's, but the NFL LB coach who brought the Ravens defensive schemes produced a much better defense.
Pry right in the middle of DMV can really hurt our recruiting. He knows the players, coaches, and landscape. It's yet another reason we need to recruit nationally if possible.
Pry is much more a schematics coach than a recruiter. It's who he takes away from our staff and the success he will have going forward that will matter the most.

Assuming VT and Pry close the deal, it will be interesting to see who from Franklin's staff joins Pry in Blacksburg. My guess is that DL grad assistant Deion Barnes or John Scott Jr. go to Blacksburg; Scott if Pry makes him DC. Barnes becomes PSU's DL coach if Scott leaves.

Pry was noticeably absent yesterday during in-home visits with defensive recruits.

Was Terry Smith absent or present during yesterday's recruiting?

Barnes is a really good guess since his time is up as a GA. But is he ready?

If I’m a VT fan this doesn’t move the needle for me. Nothing against Pry - happy for him - but this is the defensive version of Joe Moorhead. VT won’t get the talent Penn State does and Moorhead saw how that worked out for him at Miss St.

You need someone with a bit of sizzle to at least give you a recruiting bump; someone like OB would have been great but if he didn’t like PSU’s administration he’s not going to like it anywhere outside of the SEC.

John Scott definitely leaves with him, unless VT does not pay DL coaches well. I still think Scott goes with him even if Penn State pays more. He was hired at Penn State because of Pry after they failed at their attempt to bring Elijah Robinson home. If Deion Barnes goes too, that might be a bigger loss in the long run. If Pry takes Scott with him, I would like to see Barnes promoted to DL coach to save some money to hire the best DC they can get. I think Barnes has the potential to be another Elijah Robinson. It always seemed like Barnes' name came up with DL recruits.

If it is official, best of luck to coach Pry. I've always liked VA Tech for some reason.

Hopefully Pry doesn't raid the PSU staff, recruits, or Franklin's Rolodex too hard. I feel like PSU needs to add some new blood with a DC hire.

One thing I give JF credit for is that he always picks solid assistants. Shoot, Joe Brady was a GA here for two years under him and he’s one of the hottest things going. Then add Gattis, Moorhead, etc….he’ll make the right move.

He was a big cheerleader with other recruits too, wasn’t he? Not good.

I think with the exception of Allar, a lot of these guys love and want to play for Franklin. QB recruiting is more nuanced I think so the OC is extremely important.

No tears from me losing Pry. I felt like this was his best defense at Penn State and it still managed to get completely dominated by Illinois’ (Illinois!!!!!) running game. And his position has never seemed to learn how to tackle. Next coach up!!!

Just read that Pry is expected to keep interim coach J.C. Price on staff. He was the Dline coach prior to being named interim coach. Maybe no room for Scott

Bummer if true. Pry has been the most consistent on the staff.
Agreed, with one caveat...the defense has unquestionably performed very well in most games during his tenure, and particularly this year, but the caveat is that it is still frustrating that blitzes never seem to "get home", thereby leaving huge gaps in the pass defense...that could be considered an inherent risk to any blitz, but it seems disproportionately damaging to PSU than it is for opponents when they blitz. 🤷‍♂️

Overall though it seems he has done a good job imho.

I don't see that happening. Sean seems content being associated with the Cowboys

Was only a matter time before Sean Lee found his way back into the building. You just knew he couldn't stay away from football after retiring following the 2020 season. And there he was on Monday at The Star, having attended the game on Sunday but pointed out he's been doing some pro scouting work from home for Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay. Says he loves it. Just knew he'd get the itch, which might lead to a scratch sometime soon.

Any decent coach going there can hurt PSU's recruiting. PSU can recruit, but it needs to take the next step now with Mr. 10 year contract.

Given how this season played out it probably a good thing to make some changes.
I like Pry but I thought the D struggled to get three and outs and gave up some scores late in game and it cost them. They also gave up some time consuming drives that kept the O on the sidelines .Maybe a new set of eyes and philosophy is needed.

I'm guessing Elijah comes home this time when JF offers him the DC role and some of this new budget.
