Brewster is an amazing hire no matter the circumstances

Guys, I am not sure that we could have made this hire 4 years ago. This is a former head coach that took a year off and is looking to re-invent his coaching career by going to a place that is cutting edge and on the rise. I am not sure that in the history of MSU football we have been at a point where could make a position coach hire of this magnitude. Some may say that I am overstating this, but before you say that please watch the video on Marshmellow's blog below, read his Wiki page, and read the article where Rivals names him as the #3 recruiter in the past decade. Some on here have said that this is a great hire considering the circumstances, however, IMO I think this is an absolute home run hire NO MATTER the circumstances. This program is going places and coaches around the country are taking notice.

Carl Torbush was a former head coach too

Very true, but thats analysis from under a rock. Watch the video and read up on this guy, and it should become fairly obvious that this guy is a baller that is nothing like Carl Torbush. In a position coach role, I am really not sure that we could have made a better hire. This guy was in a no win, horrible situation at Minnesota. He didn't get a good program, UNC under Mack Brown, handed over to him and destroy it like Torbush.

I'm not disagreeing with your overall point, just pointing out that being a former HC doesn't really qualify him more than anyone else. Sometimes it can be a hinderance. When Sherrill's program took a nose dive, didn't he have quite a few former HC assistants?

Coach Brewster was Antonio Gates position coach in '03 and '04 and helped transition Gates from a college hoops player to the best TE in the NFL. Gates had the best TD season of his career with 13 in 2004 under Brewster. I agree with shotgun that this hire is a home run.

I totally agree with on that, but him being a former head coach, while I think, like Hudspeth, it helps to have one on the staff, is the least of the reasons I really like this hire. What I like most about him is his experience under very respected coaches at all levels, the fact that he is considered an elite recruiter, and if you watch the Marshmellow video you will see that he oozes energy and commands respect.

I mean we just replaces Mirando with this guy. uhhhhh, upgrade!

Torbush was also not ranked by Rivals as one of the top 10 recruiters in the country (no. 3 to be exact) in an article written in 2011.

definitely an upgrade

I guess I was splitting hairs on the HC part. One concern I have is if he is trying to restart his career, how long will he be content as a WR coach? He ahs to be here for longer than a season for his recruiting abilities to really matter.

That's a legitimate concern, but the way I think about it is "Its better to have love and lost than to have never loved at all", or would you rather settle for the ugly girl because you were afraid to ask the hot girl out? We are in a big boy league and our program in on the rise, due to that, I am OK with going for it and going for the best. I always say that we should hire the best coach possible because there is no way to know when a coach, no matter his experience, will leave. Just look at Mirando. IMO, you can't hire a lesser coach because you think he would stay longer, because no one knows how long any coach will stay. Therefore, I think we should always hire the best possible coach for each position and then worry about the rest later.

I rate this hire based upon others we could have picked up. The pickings are slim 10 days before the season starts. Based upon the circumstances, this hire appears better than any of us could have dreamed. We aren't hiring in mid-December or mid-January. It's late August and 99.9% of college coaches already have a job. Great hire in my opinion. Maybe he remains after this season, maybe he doesn't.

Absolutely.

One of my first thoughts was that if the LT regime was still around and we were looking for a HC for this season, a guy like Brewster would be on the A-list.

That's not to discredit him as a capable coach either. It may simply be tough to win at Minnesota. My only point with that is that it's amazing how far we've come the last several years knowing that we just convinced a man to come to Starkville for a staff coaching position when it's very likely he would have qualified to be on the HC shortlist under our prior administration.

This is an amazing hire for a staff position. It really seems to good to be true - I'm hoping there is no catch (i.e. temporary for one season, then back to TV analyst spot).

Exactly. It's a no-lose situation for us. We've upgraded at WR coach for at least one year in the worst case scenario. Never, ever, ever back off of hiring a good coach because you're concerned how long he might stay. That's the Templeton way of thinking. We don't think that way at MSU any more.

Yes but can he spend 30 million $ in 30 days on recruits?**

If this hire does nothing else, it at least gives the guys on the local sports station here in MN a reason to talk MSU football. May not always be in the best light because there arent many Brewster fans around here, but as long as they don't get any good sound bites to bash him on (and his enthusiasm gives a lot of chances) I should hear a little more MSU talk in Big Ten country.

The guy took Minnesota to two bowls in four years, so its not like he was a complete disaster as a head coach
