We have no girls from MS on our rooster, is the state of HS Girls Soccer in MS that bad? Several players from TX and FL.

Short answer is yes. It’s that bad. But TD very rare for a girl from Mississippi to play at a big school. We had Carly Mauldin from West jones make 2nd team all sec, but that was close to 10 years ago. But you’d go 0-12 in sec if you played Mississippi players.

No it’s not. The staff refused to look at any girls that did not have a ECNL badge on their jersey. The state still does not have a club that has been accepted in the NL. We only have the second division RL.

ETA: High school soccer is that bad. But D1s don’t recruit from high school they recruit from clubs. We have some pretty damn good club teams.

No we don’t. Any club team can win “championships” playing against other mediocre to bad teams. Thats part of the scam of travel ball sports. There’s a “national champion” crowned every week in Orlando in every sport. If Mississippi girls could play someone would find them. D We recruit from top division clubs because that’s where the best players are.

One of the best seniors in the state this year is going to play at Auburn. She committed before Armstrong took the job.

Also why did Loposer go to Iowa? She started in the back with just 3 backs.

That’s 2 girls Mississippi has produced in 6 years. Loposer is a good solid player. The other one who knows? But most top Mississippi players go g5 & many struggle to get playing time there.

Yeah I’m not really arguing for the state. Mostly just noting it. It’s really wierd we have so many Boys NL teams and no girls. The boys aren’t going anywhere but Juco for the most part too.

That is interesting. It’s not like Mississippi boys soccer is any better then girls soccer.

So if clubs are recruited more than HSs, I'm assuming the parents of those girls paid much more in travel ball costs over the years than whatever athletic scholarships they are getting.

I didn't realize that about soccer (club teams are better than HS teams).

The boys go to Juco, by and large, because of the scholarship limits and academic makeup of men’s soccer schools, especially in the south. Men’s soccer has had a 9.9 scholarship limit in D1 and 9 in D2, while the roster size is 25-30 players. While there are public colleges in the South that have men’s soccer, from what I’m looking at, they’re by and large private universities, which means they’re going to come with a big price tag if you’re not getting the whole thing paid off. Juco’s can give out 18 full ride scholarships for a men’s soccer roster and that pretty much fulfills an entire team.

That may change now that schools can fully fund a roster (up to 28 for soccer).

Mississippi has no D1 schools that sponsor men’s soccer, but has two D2 schools, Delta State (public) and Mississippi College (private).

Also, I think the fact that the SEC doesn’t sponsor men’s soccer makes it feel like a “less than” sport in Mississippi. To my knowledge, my high school back home still doesn’t sponsor boys or girls soccer. We had boys soccer for about 3 years in the 90’s as some sort of grant program, but then killed it when the grant ran out.

Soccer is far down the list of priorities at most high schools. The coaching oftentimes is just a warm body.

Interesting. Travel soccer is as big as travel baseball….in Jackson. I fear that being a rural state yet again hurts us here in a suburban sport.

Baseball, on the other hand, was always in the MS small towns.

Mary Frances Symmes from Gulfport is at Nc State. LL Taylor and Addie Siders at USM, Emma Reeves at UT Chatt, AK Harrell central Arky, and several more at other G5s.

the problem is not necessarily the talent it’s college coaches go to events where they can get the most bang for their buck. Which so happens to be at these national league events. And if you go to a colleges ID camp you are grouped in together with either the NL players or non NL players. Guess who gets the attention?

now as to why MS does not have a girls NL team as opposed to boys. The girls is the older and more established league to get into that you have to prove your worth at the regional level. The boys side is fairly new and still adding new conferences.

Sounds like we need to go against the grain there too. Seems to be a theme for MSU sans baseball, which is prevalent in the state.

Is there such a thing as recruiting raw talent and developing, when it comes to volleyball, soccer, softball? These days there may not be. With travel culture you either get on board or quit and do other things. Even in MS.

We signed a girl from Olive Branch last November: Krossley Jones. She is not on the current roster, and I do not know what happened for her not to be on the team.

So you named one at a program that might be close to our current program? Might!

So 1 player who doesn’t play much for NC State & few G5 players. You’re not convincing me that we need to recruit Mississippi more.

Kate Smith graduated from Gulfport High 3 years ago and is playing at Ole Miss. Abbie Badurak graduated from Gulfport High 2 years ago and is playing for USM. I’d bet some OS and NWR girls are playing D1 ball somewhere.

So you're up to 1 starter (Loposer) and 2 bench players at P5 schools. Long way from proving your point.

Are you trying to prove that we shouldn't be recruiting Mississippi or should be?

Couple of things - do with this information what you like.

Auburn has zero soccer players from Alabama on their roster; Alabama has two. We are not the outlier, but it would be nice to have more players from the home state.

It's not nearly the same level of play, but Emma Reeves from Jackson Prep plays for UTChattanooga. (Tate's daughter)

Volleyball ... about the same. We have one player from Mississippi. Ole Miss has zero.

Other than basketball to a point, women's sports in MS is poor. I guess track is pretty decent too but who cares?

Some clubs (not in MS that I know of) prohibit players from playing high school ball. Club only.
