In the Cohen -> Kennedy -> Mullen -> Orgeron dick-waving contest below, someone opined that they thought Cohen's comments would hurt recruiting.

<font size="2" face="georgia, palatino">"I listened to Jim Ellis. It's a good thing we have the best radio guy in the country because, at the very least, you get to listen to something of quality associated with Mississippi State baseball on the radio, because there's nothing of quality happening on the field there for a while."</font>
<font size="2" face="georgia, palatino">"In the future," he said, "we will have pitchers who have a background of throwing strikes."</font>
Current commits and other high school players considering MSU will think twice about playing for Cohen because of quotes like these. Recruiting will not fail, but won't be as strong as hoped.

I don't think his comments help for two reasons:

1: We don't need to burn bridges. We never know who our current players and their families know. We don't need them having bad feelings about our program and negatively influencing a recruit.

2: These comments may make some players think twice about playing for Cohen. If he did it to others, then he'll do it to you.

I understand the drive and the passion to excel. I admire that. But, it is no excuse to be rash with your mouth. Especially when it comes to other people. John needs to be more thoughtful.

Just my humble opinion ....

I'd use his comments if I were an opposing coach.

Some parents these days go way beyond just being protective of thier kid. Some are off the chart involved. Think select team parents. Cohen's alleged temper will be used against him and he's supplying plenty evidence that he's a hothead. The other side of the argument is that kids with parents that sensitive are't worth the trouble anyway. </p>

What in the world did everyone think we were getting in Cohen? Just watching him coach KY at Dudy Noble has been a trip. His last time here as a visiting coach, he wouldn't even let the Diamond Girls work his innings. Said they were "too distracting". Talk about intense! We have had a great time watching him act like a two-year-old kicking his feet, throwing his hat and yelling at his KY players. Too bad Child AD has stuck us with tis obnoxious a**!

I hear Cohen has a nice wife and kids. How would he like having someone publicly berate them the way he has his own players? Let's let one of those players' moms get up in his face and give him some payback. If only that would make the news!

Just like Fogelsong - Cohen's already outta here! It's just a matter of time. When West Point's mayor goes off the College Board Child AD won't have any skirts to hide behind and we can put this ugly period in Bulldog athletics behind us with some personnel changes. I would love to be the one to say to Child AD "Greg, we've decided to move in a different direction."

We want players that want to win. If the players are worried about getting cut because they aren't good enough, then we probably don't want them.

No coach is going to recruit a guy that he thinks he is going to have to cut. That doesn't make any sense. "Well, Bobby, you can come play for us and we'll give you some scholarship money, but we're probably going to end up cutting you."

Remember what I said a couple of weeks ago about the players parents telling me that their son just wanted to play for a coaching legend? That's what we DON'T want.

is recruiting them that Cohen thinks enough of them as a player and a competitor to offer them a scholly. His comments are a little rough, but he did not recruit/sign these kids. After spending time with them since the fall, they should already know what is expected of them. Secondly, if pitchers did not know that they were signed to throw strikes, by locating pitches, with change of speed, then they should not be pitchers much less be playing d-1 ball.

In fairness, Cohen signed Bussey, who walked in the go ahead run Sunday.

We don't know who he is or isn't going to cut, and it's not going to be based on one game. The entire bullpen had a meltdown, and while Bussey was part of it, it wasn't like it was just him either.

Most of the good ones signed in the early signing period months before Cohen was hired. That's not to say that Bussey was a good signee or a bad one, but let's wait until Cohen has had a legitimate chance to recruit at MSU before we start judging his signees.</p>

Cohen acts as though he has never lost a game as a coach, too quick to blame players! Hope he matures some!

.......of the completely pussified society we live in today. Far too many people are overly sensitive and get their feelings hurt too easily these days. They whine about some of the smallest things. We've become a very thin-skinned people, and we've lost the ability to laugh at one another or laugh things off in general. Everyone else has to walk on egg shells these days, constantly worrying about being politically correct about this and that.

Seems like almost everyone is always looking for something or someone who's "done them wrong." Rarely does anyone look in the mirror and see the hypocrite staring back at them, and rarely do they ever accept personal responsibility before finding someone else to blame for all their problems in life.

Poor John. He's an old guard, hard working capitalist mentality in a weak-minded, lazy, socialist handout society in 2009 America. If only we could have replaced Ron Polk with John Cohen back before MSU got to the point where "our kids feel too much pressure by the fans at home" mentality became a way of life.

Who gives a **** about how Cohen's comments affect our players feelings. If they're worth a ****, they'll rise up to the challenge to prove him wrong, like Bowen may have started to do tonight. I remember years ago reading that Jerry Kramer (a 5-time All-Pro offensive lineman for the Packers back in the 60's) said that the first time he made All-Pro he was stunned because all he'd ever heard Lombardi tell him was how bad he sucked. There's too many whiny-*** bitches these days worrying about things like "feelings" or "self-esteem" and not enough worrying about getting the damn job done.
