The following quote should not have been said publicly.

From Locke's Twitter - "Talking defensive ends, Mullen noted the in-season departure of Jonathan McKenzie, saying "he quit on all his teammates".

I remember reading where he said something similar to that about McKenzie and I wasn't exactly too happy about it. He mainly quit because he really felt it would be the best option for him to pursue his engineering degree. I have to give him a lot of respect because I know how hard it was for him since I was a walk on during the time going through an engineering degree as well. Sometimes some people have high priorities than football.

mullen could have been trying to say "yes he did quit the team and put us in a tough spot b/c we a now thin a DE" ... such a statement could easily be slightly mis-worded and contorted intosuch that it was.

mckenzie will someday regret not finishing out hisfootball career. highly, highly regrettabledecision.

Mullen probably shoudn't say this publicly like ds said, but I don't see how you quit mid season. These doubts about football coupled with academic priorites are fine, but didnt he have them before the season started? You either quit offseason or play the year out. I hope nothing but the best for him but it makes me think there was something behind the scenes we dont know.

...there was more to this than that statement alone. It may very well have been how Mullen viewed it, but Jonathan McKenzie may have had more than one reason. Academics was certainly a consideration, lifestyle choices another, and a strong belief system was another. I don't see the value in bringing this up again, but I am not the Swami...the omnipotent dawgstudent!

It was pointed out that he actually didn't say "<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; ">McKenzie". From Locke:</span><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 12px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;">"Mullen's comment aboutMcKenzie, he didn't not mention him by name. Was asked about depth at DE, mentioned loss of Bell, too."</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 12px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;">
</span></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 12px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;">

Appreciate his father's service to the University.
Appreciate his desire to spend more time on academics, etc.....
Quite sure he is a great kid, blah, blah, blah.........

He quit mid-season leaving his team and coaches in a bind.
No problem with our coach calling it what it was and discussing the consequences as it relates to our defensive line.

I'm OK with it.

Knowing what we do about Mullen, I'm sure he's already said the same thing to McKenzie.

We all know Mullen doesn't pull any punches. Why should we expect him to here?

Why do you give this young man and his family a reason to defend themselves.

Of course, if this kid is who I understand him to be, he probably will refuse to defend himself publicly, thereby displaying a level of maturity that exceeds that of his coach.

Sell. Get your emotions off of your sleeves. Calling Mullen immature is stupid. He's done way more for this university than most of the people who would detract from him.

Especially knowing that Locke later said Mullen never mentioned McKenzie by name.

just a horrible job of reporting if that is indeed true. Locke tried to turn this into something that wasn't there.

"Re: Mullen's comment about McKenzie, he did not mention him by name. Mullen was aksed about depth at DE, mentioned loss of Bell, too"

I heard $!% was asked "did McKenzie quitting on you hurt?", which he responded "nobody quit on me, if anyone quits on anyone in this program, they're quitting on their teammates."

That's a HUGE difference, but Locke and every other ink print hero out there want to practice sensational journalism and stir up BS. Take a quote, misquote it, and stir up business. They should make him retract the damn statement.

I look at it this way. As I recall I think he got a slight concussion in the AU game when he got lit up on one play From the comments at the time I think that scared him a little, which is is understandable for a kid who plans on making his eventually living with his brain and not his athletic talents.

But the team was also counting on him for a lot of PT last year at DE so yes, he also quit on his team.

Did he make the right or wrong decision - not for us to judge. If he had just quit as a PE major with no injuries it's one thing, but there was more going on here I think.

someone replied to on twitter: "We had a player how quit on all his teammates the night before a game". Not sure of the accuracy. Not as bad as specifically calling out McKenzie but it makes you cringe a little.

I've got no sympathy for someone who quits on his teammates in the middle of the season. And I've got no problem with a coach who tells it like it is.

Maybe calling him by name isn't the best route, but if didn't use his name directly then I have 0 problem with it at all. He did quit on the team. He went through all off season workouts, two a days, practices, gameplans, and freakin started at DE to start the season. he QUIT ON THE TEAM. he quit on the coaches and teammates MID-season. Get through the season buddy. I don't even know why you do that really? You get through all the off-season hard *** bull **** and you finally get to the bad *** fun of SEC games and you quit.
