Buy/Sell: Freeze is a far better coach than Mullen.

I'm taking a heavy buy. Freeze just absolutely dominated Mullen in a game that neither was taking lightly. Freeze has done so with a team that was in the pits of hell and made them into a team that competes with the best of the SEC West; Mullen still can't compete in year 4.

Freeze has surrounded himself with good assistants that understand the game of football; Mullen has surrounded himself with "lap dog" assistants that are only good at hanging their heads after a good public tongue lashing.

Freeze's players play inspired football for 60 minutes; Mullen's guys look like a bunch of spoiled teenage girls that didn't get the brand new car on the 16th birthday.

Both are "offensive gurus", but only Freeze actually understands offense.

i said during the A&M game that I lost all faith in Mullen because of him giving up in that game early in the second half. This game just confirmed my feelings that we don't have a good coach.

Soft Sell. Even though Tyler Russell has played well for the most part, he doesn't fit Mullen's style. Wallace actually fits Mullen's style better. Freeze beat MSU playing an up tempo offense similar to what Mullen would prefer to run and our defense couldn't keep up.

We will probably go 6-6 next year and squeeze into a Bowl Game by beating the Bears on the last Saturday in November. And then, it will be Dak's team, and if Mullen stays, he will go back to the spread option with the zone reads.

overreacting a bit. freeze has one year under his belt. mullen 4. let's look over the next few years. to say mullen cant compete is retarded. we are going to 3 straight bowls. lets see what off-season changes he makes.

Would Mullen prefer to run up tempo? Any time we've attempted to run up tempo this season, we looked pretty dysfunctional. I don't think we ever practice up tempo.

I think he actually liked what he saw in Freeze's offense. They average about 15 seconds to run plays. Russell takes over 20 seconds, whether in huddle or no huddle. He made some very poor decisions with his reads tonight and threw into traffic a bunch of times and over throws several times. I think back to one series where we needed 5 yards and he rolled out and passed up the first down pass to an open short option to throw a bad pass to a covered receiver down the field on sidelines. His decision making takes too long. The quick tempo game requires speedy receivers and quick decisions by QB, even on the snap count. Get the play and go!

So yes, except for having Russell at QB, I think Mullen would like to pick it up some.

I agree that I am overreacting...... a bit. But after watching us play the same all season with little to no improvement tells me that our coaching was lacking this season.

Did we compete with the teams we expected to? I don't think so. In games that we were expected to win big and didn't, many used the excuse that we were "holding back", but it is clear as day that we were never holding back.............. we just weren't that good. Our record is a product of smoke and mirrors. This is Mullen's 4th year; it's his team, and we should have performed better this season. Thank God for a joke of a schedule. Next season's gonna be rough.

Freeze is better because he is hard-nosed in game preparation and runs a better system of offense. With Freeze's offense you basically just need speed/finesse guys to beat teams you're not supposed to beat. Mullen's offense can only be effective with Bama type talent, against tough defenses. Mullen doesn't have the playmakers to win against good competition. We need killer rbs, like Bama, to punish the d-line and open the passing game. It's the only way our style of offense will work against tough competition.

6-6 but beat the Bears? They were one of the better teams we played this year. We lose far more impact players to graduation. I agree with SyanoraStanz that our schedule was a joke. We won 7 by doing nothing. We need a better OOC schedule so we don't sleep walk into the SEC. The SEC teams we beat this year went 3- 30 in the SEC. Really? Really?

You're correct. Tyler needs to go ahead and go pro, Mullen doesn't know how to coach a qb like him. Dak fits Mullen's style a lot better

Ole Miss had a big advantage in this game of almost desperately needing it. The Hungry Dog fights harder.Their players responded beautifully. I do think Mullen did a poor job of responding to the challenges that this game brought on, but overall I do not want to trade coaches with the back-again Ole Miss Rebels. Next year it's going to be a war. Can't wait.

Are you kidding me? Some of you on here talk nonstop about how Ole Miss is and has been terrible but they've always had more talent than us and they've always had a good offense, better than ours. The problem has been that they don't have depth and their defense has been so had that their offense didn't really matter.

Freeze walked into a golden situation. Apart from the fans screaming bloody murder and that thugtastic roster, it was a smart decision to take the job.

Mullen took over one of the worst rosters mankind has ever assembled. The facilities were junk but he managed to sell it to the fans and a lot of good players, but not as many good players as Ole Miss (grove, bars, white girls who swallow, etc).

Mullen has won 8 games twice in 3 years. In your wildest dreams did you think that would be possible 10 years ago? Not to mention the fact that comparatively this is one of the least talented teams we've had under Mullen apart from 2 or 3 rock stars.

A lot of you have "ya boy" and will argue with me, but outside of our corners no one on our defense is very talented. Hardworking? Sure. That counts for something. Offense? Russell and Jackson, Ladarius would log significant PT for a lot of SEC teams but he wouldn't get 20 carries. Bumphis decided to come out and play this season, but Arceto and the rest of them? Middle of the road. I love them to death for giving their everything to MSU but this isn't a very stacked roster.

Next year we add "the Browns" and highly regarded receivers, DBs, and keep Russell and some of our key role players. The 2010 edition of the dogs were top notch, and Mullen has been looking for those same players since. Good coaches win until they replace them, and Mullen has 2 back to back winning seasons in transition.

Give me Mullen all day, EVERY DAY. This is the same school that hyped up Houston Nutt.

His assistants I can go without though.

Time will tell the tale. After year 2, we thought Mullen was the best thing since mom's apple pie. Even though I'm pissed, Mullen still has us beating who we are suppose to beat. Losing at OM is not a shocker, although we should have had a chance to win the game. Most of us are just pissed because we seem to be treading water at best.

Let's see how ell Freeze is doing in year 4 and then you can really compare the two.

Sell. OM was not in pits of hell, talent wise. He just got the talent focused. Mullen is winning at a greater pace than any MSU coach ever with talent handicap. Mullen is a very good coach.

That 2009 team had Dixon, sherrod, Wright, Mitchell,White, Cox, Love, McPhee, Chaney and Brigone. That's 9 NFL players that Croom either had on the roster or had committed.

Im not sure how anyone can say that there wasn't talent on the 2009 MSU team. I count 7 NFL players on the defense alone.

1. Dixon doesn't make the NFL if Mullen doesn't kick his *** and whip him into shape.

2. Sherrod isn't drafted in the 1st or anywhere near it running the WCO.

3. White committed to Mullen.

4. Cox wavered at the end of his recruitment but stuck it out for Mullen, and Mullen molded him. Croom did nothing more than sat in his living room. He doesn't get credit for beefing him up.

5. McPhee, see Cox.

6. Chaney benefitted more than anyone by Mullen coming to State.

7. Croom doesn't get credit for the 2009 recruiting class. They didn't sign with him and they never attended ONE of his practices. Look at all of his recruiting wins, look at Pegues...

The point is not who did what with the talent. The point is that they were here, meaning Mullen was pretty well set up with talent when he got here. It was not some horrible situation like you make it out to be.

I think you're mixing up our basketball and football programs.

BUY, If Mullen was a good coach Dak would have gotten a lot more playing time last night. What we were doing wasn`t working and if you`ve got enough confidence in a QB to give him the ball in the red zone then you give him a chance to change the momentum of the game if you`re losing. For this and many other examples that have been discussed ad nauseum Mullen has shown he is a slow learner with a limited upside.

Now, I agree there. He has got pick up recruiting. But I was referring to game prep, in game adjustments and etc.

Mullen may be being a bit loyal to Tyler. It's understandable to an extent. Dak may not ever start over Tyler but hopefully will start getting more playing time next year. The offense being run with Tyler is probably not what Dan would prefer, but have to admire his loyalty to a guy who paid his dues and is now an adequate able true QB, unlike any in recent history at State.

Mullen's loyalty is killing us in some areas.

1) He's been loyal to Wilson because he's the one that helped us get to where we are now. He needs to go. Some saw the writing on the wall last year with Wilson, but this year it was bad. The DL was horrible and the defense as a whole was pathetic. Will Mullen stick with one of the guys that got him here? I sure hope not.

2) He's been loyal to Koenning who also was an original member of the staff when he got here. The offense as a whole had a great season, but it's very difficult not to question some of the playcalling and personnel packages this year. Too much Perkins in certain situations and not enough Griffin or Robinson. I think this offense left a lot of points on the field this year from bad drives after turnovers and we saw it last night. I think he needs to go and Mullen needs to promote Brewster to the position.

3) He's been loyal to Hevesy too long. The OL was **** last night and Tyler has been on his *** all year. Tobias is good and Gabe is very good and they got worse as the season went on. Clausell and Siddoway are horrible. They were the main cause of Tyler being on the ground after almost every throw. The OL has been a problem since the beginning and I don't see it getting better.

4) He's been too loyal to himself. Mullen needs to fire himself from being the special teams coach and he needs to run the team as a whole. He can have his hands and his fingerprints on the offense, but totally running special teams? That goes beyond the scope of what I believe a head coach should do. Time to realize that the entire team needs him and that he needs to delegate the special teams responsibility to someone else.

If we want to move forward, we have to make some changes. I said it in a post last night and I will say it again. It is time for Mullen to become a ruthless *** to everyone. He needs to start looking out for the team and throw loyalty out the window. Time to change the mentality of this team from one of the we believe underdog mantality to a downhill, aggressive, win at all costs type team. I don't think we can do that with the current coaching personnel.

Yep Dak comes in and gets a meaningless touchdown and all at once he is the man. I do agree that Tyler was off in the first half, and maybe should have been benched for a series or two, depending on how well Dak did when the game was still on the line, but to say or think we would have won this game with him in there is just stupid wishful thinking

Croom left more playmakers than we have right now. The problem is he left us with huge holes. We had a little person playing qb and no free safety and were paper thin on the OL.

Mullen has done a good job of balancing out the team because he worked a lot harder than Crooms at recruiting, but he's done a terrible job replacing the playmakers you have to have to win in the SEC because that arrogant SOB thought he was going to recruit against Ole Miss, Bama, Auburn, and LSU without opening up the check book. I think he has learned now. It's going to continue to cost us next year, but after that, we should have hte playmakers again to be dangerous.

sell. this is stupid and cannot be evaluated for a few more years. was mullen better than nutt.....i don't know, his career isn't finished and nutt won a lot of games over the years. put the crack down.

Not only talent in the upper classes, but numbers across the board. We were playing with somewhere around or less than 65 scholarship players last night. Sawyer, Elston, and Prewitt played every snap on defense because of depth. We played a walk-on corner at times. We played at least 10 freshmen or sophomores on defense last night that I can remember off the top of my head. I can think of 7 on offense. Our starting kick returners were a freshman scholarship player and a freshman walk-on.
