Buy/Sell: It's better that we didn't get Cam.

If we'd won the NC (huge if, but a lot of people talk like it's a forgone conclusion...), the bar gets set ridiculously high for MSU, Dan is out the door for "under performing" the last 2 years and we slide back into a below average program under a new head coach. Plus, independent of our success or lack of with Cam, Slive would've figured out a way to make an example of us.

Buy. We would not have won it. He would have been suspended by game 6. We would be at least one year into a multi-year probation with at least 15 scholarship reductions.

Sell - Off 1 principle

Winning a natty is NEVER...and I repeat NEVER a negative.

increases in revenue, exposure, recruiting would all be boosted. and who says Dan is still here for the last 2 years if he had won it??

Buy. As much as I wanted Cam because I feel confident that we would have won the national championship, the only way we would have gotten him was to pay up. I'd rather go 9-4 and not cheat than to dismantle our program for one championship.

WTF?? Uhh....S E L L. No one knows if we would have been busted or not. The only reason Auburn even got heckled is because somebody (probably Alabama brass) got to OUR guys and got them to squeal, which would not have happened if he was playing for us. Nobody else would have EVER known about the pay for play stuff.

Let's just say we didn't win the national championship....we probably still go 10-2 regular season (losing to Bama and LSU) and have the #1 overall NFL draft pick. Yeah that sucks totally.

Best season in school history, highest draft pick, a face for MSU football for years to come, countless hours of publicity that year, maybe a BCS bowl game appearance. It would have been the best $180K ever spent on MSU football.

Sell. No Brainer.

Sell - If we get Cam, we most likely win at least 10 games, if not all of them. If Cam comes here, then all of the cloudiness that currently surrounds him doesn't exist because he didn't go to Auburn for more money.

Pass up a NC because it raises the bar? WTF?

Better off we didn't get him or didn't buy him?

If we had purchased his services, I just don't see any way we don't get caught and get the harshest penalties possible short of SMU.

You know that guy that cheats on his wife a hundred times, and she never has a clue? You know that guy that sent his ex one text and his wife finds out and almost divorces him? Guess which one we are.

Obviously, if we'd landed him fair and square, sell.

Seriously doubt we would've won the or natty either. Way too many variables. We could have been competitive, but he would've gotten hurt or something like that.

That's pretty much my thought. I buy for these reasons:

1) I can't make myself believe he would've guaranteed a NC

2) I can't imagine the SEC and NCAA scrutiny if we pulled him away from Auburn, given the battle for $$$ that was apparently going on.

If I could get over those 2 things and really believe that is was possible, for him to be THE difference in what we did and a NC AND that he would be allowed to actually play the whole season, I'd take a NC; might even get my pic made with the trophy at the local Wallyworld!

Sell (for the right price = $160K). I have no delusion that he would have brought a NC. Too much almost went wrong for the Barners. Positives: he would have brought immediate (good) attention to the program. We would have made a BCS bowl. I don't believe the news would have broke about the $cam if he was at MSU. Negatives: We won 10 games without him. Russell would have transferred to Duke* Merlin still hasn't recruited an NFL capable quarterback - waiting on Sandbager.

Couldn’t have said it better...however, I still wish we had tried to play ball. I guess the thing is that everyone knew he was good, but nobody knew he was going to end up having one of the greatest single seasons in college football history (if not THE greatest). So maybe it didn’t seem as “worth it” at the time as it does now in retrospect.

How would it have come out?

Cecil gets his money, Rogers gets his cut, Cam goes to the NFL a year later, Bond and company are out $180K for a one year MSU run at a National Championship. Everyone's happy, happy, happy. The only reason it came out now is because we got burned. Notice the Auburn boosters never went public (assuming there were some *wink wink*).

Sell x A Million...

We would have AT LEAST won 10 games (our 9 plus beating Auburn) and probably 11 or 12 if not the whole shebang.

Hell, our defense had more pros on it that year than Auburn's (Cox, Wright, White, etc.)

I wouldn't care if we got hit hard by the NCAA (and I don't even believe that can happen anymore) afterwards because getting to go to Atlanta and/or a BCS title game would have been more than worth it.

Who cares if Dan would've left or been canned because of pressure? I'd fire him this minute if it guaranteed a conference title or a BCS appearance. Any AD, at a school like ours, that wouldn't is a fool.

Buy. We would have been investigated for sure and to get him we know it would have required us to pay up to his mule renting dad. I have zero doubt that Slive would not have protected us like he did Auburn. Hell, even if we got him AFTER telling his dad we wouldn't pay, I think that Slive would have suspended Cam where he didn't do that to Auburn.

Buy, we have gotten destroyed just about everytime we have had a brush with the

NCCA. If we had been undefeated with Cam when all that **** broke out we would have been
done then and probably still suffering.

I can’t remember if Cecil allegedly started shopping Cam around...

before or after we told him to 17 off. If it only happened after, then perhaps the whole thing does stay quiet.

If there was already smoke surrounding his recruitment, though, and he had been shopped to Auburn, Tennesssee, Oklahoma, etc. or whatever was rumored, and then ended up at MSU, it’s a pretty good bet we would’ve taken it up the ***...

Are yall serious? Hes 17ing cam newton of course I would sell that BS. Have you all forgotten that State only lost to Auburn by 3? He wouldve obviously led Mullen's team to a national title. If winning a title isnt your highest aspiration as a fan then what is?

Easiest sell in history. The only difference between our team and Auburn that year was Cam. He was a one man gang. We were overall the better team on D. I'd give them the edge at WR. RB & OL were essentially a push. Hell, we had them f'n beat if Broomfield (I think) doesn't drop the pick 6.

Also, at the very least, we would've been guaranteed a BCS bowl berth. I'd ride the wins and exposure all the way to the bank. Honestly, I don't understand some of our fans. It's about winning, period. We win more with Cam than without him.

No kidding. Hell, as it is now Dan's chair should be warming up and he didn't have to win a NC for that to happen. If we don't take a step forward this year I'd say his seat should be hot by the end of the year.

It was nice to finally get that "SEC win other than..." win but you see where that got us.

I'd help Dan pack...I'd buy him new luggage, if it was a result of him leaving due winning an NC a few years before.

Which, I would challenge the notion that somehow MSU fans would suddenly feel like State should be an NC contender every year. I dare say the expectations would remain about the same. Auburn already has a higher bar and rightfully so. Their pressure was fair. I don't see State fans suddenly feeling like they were entitled to ten wins every year.

Wrong here Der. Slive isn't putting anyone on probation in this conference and no commish ever should. It's been going on forever with every school since the 1940s. Slive woulda file 13 it if it ever hit his desk which it would not have since most thought he was coming here anyway. Slive is smart enough to know the best thing for the sec is no one ever gets put on probation. Many in the conference recognized this after we turned Cecil in.
