coach's hiring doesn't conflict with the hiring of UT's new coach next year?

I'm buying. If we hire before UT, we can hire a coach at a reasonable salary before UT drives up the market even more. Plus, we may get looks from better candidates.

we can find somebody that is worth AT LEAST 2.5 million and would be willing to come to state for 3 million. We have a little extra cash lying around thanks to ESPN. It couldn't have come at a better time.

UT is going to hire John Gruden regardless of what we do. Plus, UT will be looking for someone proven. I think (hope) we will look at younger coaches from lower divisions, non-BCS schools, and D-I coordinators to fill our job, should there be an opening.

provided they're proven head coaches already and haven't been sitting where they are for too long a period of time. Coordinators are obviously a bit more risky, and with our luck, we'd make the wrong choice, but my confidence in Byrne is growing leaps and bounds to make the best decision for us. The main thing is to have a wide search, unlike last time around, but I don't even want to go there. For State to go the young coach with a proven record at lower division route would be unprecedented, but it may time for a little "unprecedentedness."

....Two different markets. We are not in the market for anybody UT hires and vice versa. In fact, if UT is our only competition, that would be a good year. We don't want to be hiring when Arkansas, OM, South Carolina, Kentucky, etc. are hiring.

Plus, you are going to run up against somebody hiring almost every year.

Experience is preferred. One of Croom's biggest problems has been having to learn (I don't think he ever will) how to be a HC. At least if you've coached at Georgia Southern (hint, hint) you've dealt with the media, an entire staff, you've recruited, and you've made calls on those 4th and 15's.

Nothing personal, but I think our minimum requirements need to be proven I-AA head coach or proven I-A coordinator. I'm sure there are high schools in Alabama that draw more fans than UNA does to games.

guess was thinking that UNA was I-AA or what used to be??? have followed Hatcher and watched some of his teams on television, and to be honest, don't know as much about Hudspeth, just that he seems to have that "lean and hungry look". We need one that has that "lean and hungry look."

Does it even matter? Even if we got lucky and got a good small school coach or coordinator like Urban Meyer and Mark Richt were, would they be successful here?
Spurrier is supposedly the best out there, but I don't think he'll ever finish higher than 3rd or 4th in the East at USC. Dan Hawkins was the reason for Boise St's success, but he's been mediocre at Colorado. The list goes on and on of supposed great coaches that don't do well at lower tier programs.
I'm not saying that we can't get better than Croom, but if we had a $3 million coach, would we be an elite program or even close with the resources that we have?

He's been on cruise control ever since the national title in 1996. Actually, it's not so much that he's been on cruise control as it is the game has passed him by. Now everybody's doing the same **** he was doing in the early to mid 90s and he can't adjust.

I think he has never been into recruiting and simply can't get the horses to come to South Carolina. He still is innovative and has the passion to win, but his teams seem to have a talent weakness, i.e. depth, OL/DL, QB, etc.

He actually managed to leave Florida somewhat depleted of talent when he left there. That's not easy to do.

And the main reason I'm selling is because Croom is not going anywhere this year or at the end of this season. Forget about it.

There may be some people out there that would come into their first year on the job as AD of a major college university and fire the head football coach, but Byrne isn't going to do that. I don't know Byrne personally other than shaking his hand a couple times, but one thing that I've gathered about his management style is that he's going to follow processes and do things by the book. Somebody like that isn't going to come in and fire Croom after one season, especially after personally giving him a raise and extention after last season.

I do think the GB will sit Croom down after the year is over and give him an ultimatum or two, but that's all I'm really expecting out of him this year. If we truly only win a couple games this year and then do the same next season, Croom's *** will be on the hot seat, but not until then.
