Is this a good idea? As a 2 seed, I am not so sure.
Missouri is holding ace pitcher and likely top draft pick Kyle Gibson until Saturday -- in anticipation of a matchup against Ole Miss.

"We're not here to win on Friday," head coach Tim Jamieson said. "We're here to win the regional. To do that, we have to beat the home team

then there's no way he'd beat Mississippi in Oxford. I actually think WKU may be UM's biggest threat in that regional anyway.

Missouri should be able to beat WKU with their number 2 pitcher - this always gets attention when a Lipscomb beats a Georgia but for every time there is an upset, there are 10 times that this works in the team's favor. Mizzou will need everything they have to beat Ole Miss on Saturday, but I'm not sure they could hold Ole Miss off coming out of the loser's bracket if they did beat them.

We pitched Crosswhite, then Pigott in 2007. Now, neither were "aces" but Pigott was the better pitcher in my opinion even though they had been pitching in that order all season.

Now if Mizzou loses today, the coach will look like an idiot, but assuming the dropoff from the ace to #2 isn't huge, it's a calculated risk I would take, as a 2 seed.

It depends on how good they think Western Kentucky is, which they obviously don't think they are.

I don't think it's a bad idea, though.

You win, you have your ace going up against Ole Miss.

You lose, you have your ace to win the elimination game.

I remember Polk costing us a Regional in part by pitching Paul Maholm against Middle Tennessee. The difference was we were a one seed and they were a four, though.

If you're a 2 seed, your pitching staff probably isn't as deep as the 1 seed, so you most likely can't afford to not win the first two. So you try to stagger your pitchers to put your best pitcher against the best team you'd have to beat and your No. 2 against the second best team you'd have to beat. Most No. 1s have a better chance than No. 2s of winning the regional without having to save their ace. It's a risk, but it's one I don't disagree with.

When you took FSU's regional a few years back, it's because you were a 2 seed throwing your best pitcher in the second game. That was Pigott's normal spot in the rotation, but he was your clear ace that year, and having him in the second game is the reason you won the regional.

I think Irwin should start that game.

But there are no hard and fast rules about this. There are so many different factors, and even the right decision turns out wrong sometimes.

To me, they're basically interchangeable right now. Pomeranz isn't a true ace, and neither is Irwin. They're both solid, and their numbers are fairly similar. To me, you go with the hot hand in your second game. Right now, that's Irwin.

Most lower seeds won't have the type team you would have to worry about throwing your #2 against them.

even though Im not sure they have an ace. Bethune Cookman's guy is really good.

at Cal-Irvine, they have to play Fresno State, who is the 4 seed in that Regional. I would definately pitch my ace in that situation if I was Cal-Irvine.

If a small school had a phenom as their ace, and some of these small schools do, I would be be much more inclined to go with my ace.

As with anything in baseball, it all depends on the situation.

Apparently WKU can hit the **** out of the ball and Missouri's staff is pretty bad outside of their ace. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the "upset".

the year Dewon Brazleton went in the first round. Tennessee was a one seed and had to pitch their ace b/c MTSU was throwing a first round draft pick.

I will add that I am a big fan of holding your ace for the Saturday game if at all possible. But, it all comes down to what pitcher you are facing from that lower seed on Friday.

Considering Fresno State won the national title as a 4 seed last year, I don't know if you can take any 4 seed for granted anymore. Most have at least one good pitcher. There are some 4 seeds where you can save your ace, but you can't make a dead set rule that as a 1 seed you always save your ace.

In 2006, we needed a great outing from Will Kline to get by Bethune-Cookman 3-2. They had a couple really good pitchers, and they threw the kitchen sink at us to try to win that one game. When you run into a team like that, you don't save your ace. I think that if we had an ace, we could probably save him against Monmouth, because they aren't that imposing by any means. We don't really have an ace though with Bittle out.
