The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) is changing its name to the Coastal Athletic Association starting this year. The logo and everything else remains the same. They say it’s because of their “expanding geographical footprint”, yet all of the schools are still within the colonies. There is reference online that the name change is due to inclusive language, and this is also implied in the commissioner's press release.

No it's just a stupid name in this day and age.
I’m sorry but what, specifically, is wrong with the word colonial in this “day and age”?

It’s not a coastal conference so that name is a misnomer, but the schools do share the commonality of being within the territory of the original colonies.

Maybe indigenous people.
Season 5 Idk GIF by Paramount+

It was some gangster sh*t to take their land, then fight your family (the British) because you didn't want to share the loot. 😏

I assume it means they plan to expand beyond the colonial footprint.

I don’t agree that it’s offensive, but the people who do think Colonialism is offensive is because the time period of the Colonial era, in the US, Africa etc. included cultural assimilation, and indoctrination of native peoples etc. idk there’s a lot more out there that’s worth getting offended over than that

I just think it's a stupid name for a sports conference. Period. It sounds like a made up conference from a video game.

Most conference names are dumb. Remember when we were in the Big East East for like a month during conference realignment hell? And there was a Big East West which is arguably even dumber.

San Diego State UC San Diego participates as a conference member in some sports.

Not located in one of the former 13 colonies. Located on a coast.

Edit: UC San Diego, not San Diego state

As if anyone is actually offended by the word "colonial"
From the article in OP
>Per Thamel, the conference name change comes as the league continues to expand its footprint down the East Coast, giving it an opportunity to “modernize” the name. The logo will remain the same.,<
Guess the only thing to get offended about is the CAA trying to keep up with the times.

Personally I feel Colonial Athletic Association is a better name.

AE still exists just with no University of Hartford
Albany is in America East. They play football in CAA and want into CAA for all sports
There have also been rumors that some of the southern schools in CAA such as Charleston / UNC Wilmington / Elon etc would yearn for a transfer to a southern centric conference like Big South etc.
I remember when CAA was basically an all Virginia conference and now there’s only 1 original left - William & Mary.
CAA already poached Stony Brook from America East

CAA has Northeastern/ Monmouth / Hofstra / Stony Brook / Drexel / Delaware / Towson among its members among several southern schools.
Rumors are Fairfield and Albany are on deck.
