I think he stays because I believe he likes the easiness of his job. He'll have to work harder in the SEC to post similar records and get similar seedings. I really think he enjoys dominating a lesser conference, being a big fish in a small pond.

It just came over a Memphis radio station that KY's offer is 7 mil a year. That amount is ridiculous if true.

I mean, seriously? I thought football was the moneymaker here. Damn that's alot of money for a basketball coach. Does the benefit cost ratio even come close to positive with 7 mil/year?????

and i'm sure they make some cash from the "big blue sports network" or whatever. but 7M does seem a bit extreme.

wouldn't that make him the highest paid coach period - college, pro, no matter what sport? there's something to ponder...

It was that meathead Jarmin on 98.1. He said that Gary Parrish and Chris Vernon had a blog about it. I checked both their sites and nothings reported today.

There is no way. There is no way that KY is going to pay a basketball coach 7 million a year. Carolina wouldn't, Duke wouldn't, Kansas wouldn't and neither would KY.
I'm sure they meant to say 7 mil over so many years.

Has some updates up on his blog (but nothing about pay). With all the budget cuts that universities in Kentucky are facing, 7 mil a year seems pretty unbelievable (I know, ESPN money, blah, blah, blah). Wonder if Cal will set the UK players up with sweet internships at Amazon or Lexmark.

(specifically the responses part to the articles) the Memphis fans act like that would be a given. Said if they do and Cal talks Meeks and Patterson into staying, UK would be top 5 next year.

if they have, then it will be much more complicated. the ncaa says you sign with a school, not a coach.

You are correct. Cousins hasn't signed and Wall hasn't officially commited yet, but the rumors had him a strong lean to Memphis before the UK rumors popped up. I don't think there's anyway the Memphis AD would sign off on a transfer of any player/signee to UK.

luckily for cousins, he hasn't signed yet. i think if your coach leaves, there should be an avenue for the player as well, but it would be difficult to avoid more transfers/recruiting if the one-year sit rule wasn't applied in those cases too.

i did see that UK already has 3 commits who have signed. i don't know about their numbers, but they have one highly rated big guy already. patterson, cousins, and the other big guy would be a RIDICULOUS front line. they also signed a white kid from kentucky that can supposedly shoot the lights out - something they needed this year.

FoxSports 730 show with Gary Parrish just threw out that Kentucky will offer $40M over 6 years.

Considering the **** on that team this year, I don't think it matters. Barring any APR concerns, Cal would probably be given the green light to cut as much fat as he needs to if he has high level recruits lined up.

Now that I think about it, I believe you're right. I think there is a limit on how many you can bring in during a single recruiting class, and over a three year period.

I don't think there are any limits on basketball scholarships outside of the 13 total.

Article in CA quotes his mom as saying that Memphis signed an agreement to release Nolan from his LOI if Calipari left before next season. Now, I'm pretty sure that can't be included in the LOI itself. It would have to be a separate agreement. I'm not even sure that's legal but if the school really agreed to it they'd get some serious crap if they didn't release the kid.

Pretty smart family sounds like. Kid is a top 50 swingman/shooting guard out of Texas.

he'd be making 50% more than Saban and double what Donovan makes. Makes it that much harder for schools like us to compete nationally if salaries keep skyrocketing.

If it really is $7M that's absurd. I'm pretty sure that that is what Phil Jackson makes coaching the Lakers, but I don't feel like looking it up. the 8 year/$35M that Blue says seems more likely.

Phil is making $10 million a year with the LAkers. That would be absurd. Greg Byrne said even with all the money Kentucky basketball makes they still make more on a 3-8 Kentucky football team.
