He heard about some mancrush some guy had on some MSU board concerning him and didn't want the hassle.

..He put Cam down as 75%. I have heard other rumors, from sources more well-connected than I, that Texas offered Cam recently but his father told them thanks but no thanks, he's goin to State. Wardlaw said the "likely scenario" for Cam was that he signs with State in his Dawg Biscuits.

I just don't see where else he would go. This is a guy that is trying to get to the pros. He wants to step in and be the starter and excel immediately. I don't see him doing that for sure at any school besides State. No other school (besides Florida I guess) is more Cam Newton conducive than State right now.

.........about MSU's ability to ever sign and place a legitimate SEC quarterback under center. I know we signed Russell, but we also know that there's no guarantee he'll live up to the hype. The same could be true for Newton, but the more the merrier. Our quality of depth at the position is non-existent. I thought that if anyone could upgrade the QB position at MSU it'd be Dan Mullen.

I could definately see him going to the NFL. Someone in the NFL will probably give him a look regardless just based on his size and arm strength, and speed.

He has had one recruiting class, and he has landed Russell, a highly sought after QB, and it appears as if we are in the lead for another really good QB. Under Croom, we had Ryan Perriloux as a recruit who really wasn't all that interested.

One thing about MSU- it won't be that hard to become the best QB we've ever had. It's not like you're going to be compared to immortals like Peyton Manning here.

Plus, we've never had a coach that has a history for developing QB's like Mullen. He has done well with them ever since he was at Bowling Green. I don't know how highly recruited Alex Smith was out of HS, and Tebow has regressed since Mullen left for MSU. If we get decent QB prospects, I think Mullen can at least develop them even if they aren't blue chips. That's the key- development. What could a guy like Mullen have done with an Omarr Conner?

"Coach Mullen was one of the key reasons I went to Florida. He has a great resume," said Newton. "Now he has a new job as the head coach at Mississippi State.</p>

"A lot of people thought from day one that I was going to go there just because he was there, but that wasn't true. If that was true, I wouldn't be in the situation I am in now. I would have committed a long time ago.</p>

"I like what they are doing over there. They are some good things happening in Starkville and I have a great relationships with a couple of the coaches there. I just want to keep my options open until I make a decision."</p>

So i guess the savior of our program is not quite committed yet? What say ye coach 34 and followers?

"<span class="storybody">Cameron denies a leader at this point. He will sign during the mid year enrollment period and enroll at his school of choice in time for spring football."

That he really wishes there was an opportunity at a big name program, but if that does not arise, we're the choice.
So bascially, we're a likely-to-be-used backup plan. That's ok I guess. We'll see how it goes.

doesn't want to be at MSU. Besides we still have Russell, and he can see over the line. Newton would be nice to have, but we don't have to have a "stud" qb to win in year 2. He just needs to understand the offense, make good decisions, and occasionally hit the deep routes. Surely Russell can do that after being redshirted, and being coached by Mullen. Hell, if we had Snead we would have 2 or 3 more wins, and he is average at best this year.

I haven't followed his recruitment closely, just reading mainly what I have seen on here.

I checked rivals and the only stories done by team sites are MSU and KSU. The guy seems like a stud, so who else is MSU competing with, or is this a done deal and no one else is wasting their time?

but I agree with jakestefano, we need to care a lot whether we sign him. He could easily be the difference between a 5-win season and an 8-win season. He'd have almost certainly been the difference in a bowl game and no bowl game this season. I'd much rather have Russell spend a couple of years getting some playing time as a backup before handing him the reigns than to have him start as a redshirt freshman.</p>

We're so used to quarterbacks being busts earlier and earlier in their careers, we've completely passed the playing stage and we mark them down as busts as soon as they sign.
I've heard Cam Newton's stock has a 75% chance of dropping perilously very soon.
