Just curious what everyone thinks? Can he bulk up from 290 to the 315-320 range at 6'2'' and still be athletic. I think you need to keep Mick as a DE with his height. I don't think he can play low enough to effectively play the NT. I think Mick, Freedom, Neal are ideal 3-4 DE with there Ht ranging from 6'4'' to 6'7'' and weighing 260-280.

I think that's really the big question for the D at this point. Just watching him last year, it would seem that he and his brother could put on some muscle, but that's obviously just an uninformed opinion of a guy watching them on TV and noticing how they look compared to the other players on the field.
Along the same topic, are the twins planning to participate in track and field again? I would think weight throwing helps explosiveness and overall athleticism, too.

Dude was coming on late. They are athletes....making them just a plug in the middle is waste of their talents. They could be a great 2 man tandem for years to come.

The Davis twins are extremely athletic for their size and have only completed their second year in the program. Carlos had a better RS frosh season than did Crick. It would be nice if he were a bit bigger, but other starting NT are actually smaller than Carlos. At Stanford, Harrison Phillips goes 285, and Wisconsin's starter is listed at 288. Michigan's is listed at 300. USC has a guy at 320 and Bama's guy is 319. A guy like Carlos can play in the middle.
I dont know if he is strong enough or athletic enough. He LOOKS the part. But from what Ive heard, its A LOT of bad weight.
We've heard he's a mauler in run blocking so he has some strength and drive. Bad weight is going to kill his overall athleticism and mobility.
We could either say he's too fat to play G effectively and watch him ride the pine, or at least early in the transition when we are going to struggle at the Nose anyway, get him some snaps in a role where his chief job is to eat up space.
Agree to a point. Though I think viewing a nose a simply eating up space is doing a disservice to noses like Vince Wilfork, Casey Hampton or Haloti Ngata.
But as to put him there if he can potentially contribute rather than ride the pine at guard? Go for it.
Yah that latter part is the core of my opinion. Short of a stellar grad transfer, NU is going to struggle at nose next year.
If it just comes down to, Barnett has bad weight, can he be a serviceable guard or a serviceable plug as the nose, what seems more likely? I don't think its all that out of the question that the answer is Nose simply because Guards tend to use *some* mobility.
NU really isn't in a position to sit Barnett down because he's not Wilfork, at least in the near term.
Just read an excellent write-up on Corn Nation, and their thought was you'd want Peyton Newell or Jaylin Barnett to be our NT, with the Davis twins as the DE's. They didn't seem to know what you do with Mick Stoltenberg and DaiShon Neal, because they're both really tall for a standard 3-4 system. The problem is, they are big dudes, so you'd probably want to use them at DE as well. And yeah, the NT isn't going to just eat up space, they have to constantly demand double-teams by shifting exactly right between the center and whichever guard they take. In one sense its easy, in that it doesn't require a ton of technical knowledge, but on the other hand, the player has to be extremely quick and extremely strong. If he can't demand a double-team, the rest of the scheme doesn't work as well.
They were thinking guys like Thomas and (hopefully) Daniels will make excellent NT's going forward, but for 2017 its anyone's guess as to who they will fit into that role.

I look at the linebackers, I’ve got at our two outside linebackers, guys who could probably rush the quarterback the best: Freedom Akinmoladun and Marcus Newby. Inside: Chris Weber. Hopefully Barnett can shed some pounds this summer and get in better shape so he can contribute on something more than PATs. The kid has serious potential if he can get in better shape.

I thought he was a OLB prospect in a 3-4. He's pretty seriously underweight at 220 or whatever he is right now, and I really would doubt you want to take a guy with his pass rush potential and blow him up into McMullen (280ish).
Rumors are we will be getting a nose tackle thru transfer. A 5th year senior from the east coast. Not a done deal from what I've read but it's a possibility.
It is our new DC's nose tackle from U Conn. 320 some lbs. I read about him from some Husker writer giving next year's starting defense. I guess he could graduate this summer and be a 5th year senior so he would be able to transfer. Sorry can't seem to remember his name or the article. Sorry

Yep that's him. I remember it was a different kind of name. Like I said it was a story about 2 sports guys talking about our future defense. One guy said he thinks he will transfer but didn't say for sure. Wish I could remember the article.

Poor guy has 'fat' in his last name and is a d-lineman. That's a hard way to grow up.
Since he was a RS at UCONN, he would have to complete his degree by May or the Summer in order to be a fifth year transfer. I hope this isn't some fantasy thinking, because the kid looks like he could help immediately, with the Davis twins and Mick holding down the two DE spots. Carlos could be a handful at DE this year. It would seem that if Freedom can't fit into the CAT spot, he would be the odd guy out in this D.
Wow, a transfer helping? That's great news, because I've really been struggling with who we would use as our starting NT. Also, Freedom will be fine as an OLB, but I would be more concerned with a really tall guy like Neal; he's a little big to be an LB, and he's very, very tall...
Any remote chance if Freedom didn't work well in the defense he could drop 15-20lbs this summer down to about 240 and play TE? That was where he originally wanted to play when we recruited him. We will be very young and inexperienced at TE anyway...
If Neal has great hands; he could actually be a force. If he can penetrate. and the people blocking him will be relatively close in height ; he could be a pain to throw over when he gets his hands up..... There was a player many years ago for FSU, that was very tall at DE. I loved watching him play, he made AA and into the pros - they called him , " the Mad Stork ", GBR
