Look at it like this, in the early 1900’s the “in” thing was to not smile and look as miserable as possible. At least its progression.

I’m guessing the guy in the top picture has Hawaiian heritage. That hand signal is called a Shaka and is the state hand gesture of Hawaii.
(The older guy’s form looks better, maybe it’s less natural for the athlete or maybe the young people just have a different way of doing it)
It’s also been popular on the mainland to mean “hang loose” but I don’t know if folks still do that. Seems like a dated stereotype.

The others just seem to be pointing at the other person, except the guy on the right in the bottom picture may be doing a sign of some sort.

I think that had more to do with how long it took pictures to be taken and having to stand still and hold the same expression that long. Holding a smile that long was crazy work and if you moved your lips or your face too much, you got “ghost face” in the final picture.

They're recreating the spiderman pointing meme from 1967, so right in your wheelhouse. All the cool kids are doing it.

Hahaha. I’m 44, but I picked that knowledge up from “A Million Ways To Die In The West”.
Ha touché I’m 36. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping you were an old geezer and that stung a bit.
