what happened to our team in the 3rd quarter. In the first half we played lights out. During the third, we came out flat and couldn't make much happen. We began turning it around in the fourth quarter and proved we are worthy of our ranking. Loved the game last night. Wish I could've been there in person.

Also, looking ahead toe Middle Tenn. How does Dan, prepare the team for this game. I would think the players would be looking ahead to Bama. If we're not careful, we're going to be tested by the Blue Raiders.

It's called momentum...

...the cliff notes on football games: Football games swing on momentum. In the 1st, 2nd & 4th quarters, MSU had the momentum. In the 3rd quarter, UT had the momentum. As far as Middle Tenn., just be glad they beat Georgia Tech. That should scare anybody into serious preparation.

We had Tobias Smith out for much of that quarter...

One thing I noticed was that our playcalling was very different during the third quarter than it was the rest of the game. We ran vertical routes almost exclusively in the third quarter, whereas during the rest of the game we had lots of crossing pattern combinations. UT had the verts covered, we re-adjusted, and we went back to taking care of business in the fourth.

Tobias being out was the biggest difference. We are a much better team when his is in, Freeman will be good and I'm glad he is able to get alot of plays, but Tobias is a game changer for us. Don't expect to see him again until the Alabama game.

Hell our whole offense was out for almost all of that quarter. The defense couldn't get off the field.

It was the band's fault.

They played some kind of Mayan satirical set making fun of the end of the world at halftime. We managed to piss off another group of Indian spirits. I blame the 3rd quarter on them.

My bad, i was going from memory on the young mans name instead of looking it up. His name is Malone. But the point still remains.

I meant no disrespect to Malone.

What I saw was that Tennessee made adjustments. They brought out that little running back ("Pig"?) and it was a total change of pace for them, which our defense was not ready for. I do not remember seeing him in the first half.

That guy was getting them big chunks of yardage and getting first downs. Like pat said, our D could not get off the field. They were keeping the ball out of Russell's hands, which is exactly what we did to Bray the first half.

The ability for "Pig" to run opened it up a bit for Bray. They took advantage of their opportunities. I thought it was a rather brilliant adjustment for them, and I was praying that we would respond. Kudos to our coaching staff for adjusting to their adjustment.

Like most, I have no idea why they did not give it to Patterson every time but i am glad they didnt. Damn that guy is a playmaker.

I mean I knew Patterson was good but dang we couldn't tackle that guy to save our life. Without him we beat TN by a minimum of 21 points.

Neal was picking up the same amount of yardage early in the 3rd until he went down with an injury. That's why they put the little guy in, and he continued what Neal was doing. Our line was just soft in the 3rd.

Our play calling right before halftime was very complacent and stagnant and it seemed to take our offense out of rhythm as we went into & out of the half. Any offense is predicated on rhythm & flow, any thing from facing a great defense to complacent play calling can upset that flow.

Agreed. Patterson is a freak. He's the kind of player that our defensive style of swarming to the ball plays right into the hands of.

We haven't played very good in any of our games yet in the 3rd quarter. We play pretty damn good in the 4th quarter when it counts, though.

We are still a work in progress as a team.

That it good. We definitely have room for improvement but we need to peak for the big games and improve through the season. I have to give Dan big props for this, he has improved our play from start to end each season he has been head coach.

Makes me wonder just how good we might look when we put it together for four quarters and what we might accomplish.

Seems to me that play calling gets more conservative once we get up by a couple scores. It was 27-14 at the half. UT foaled up10 unanswered in the 3rd.

I need to go back and rewatch, but

from my memory it felt like we lost yardage on 1st and long, which forced us to be one dim and ut pinned their ears back on 2nd and 3rd

it felt like we were consistently in 2nd or 3rd and long
...very surprised we threw it as much as we did and won
Tyler really has blown me away in the Auburn and UT games, I would like to see him run more when trying to milk the clock ...but right now I rather him being confident in his abilities and getting those huge 1st downs on that 5min 4th qt drive to WIN the game ...have we ever relied on our offense to lead us to victory, we did last night and they MADE the plays!

A few things I noticed... 1. UT found ways to get the ball into their playmakers' hands. Patterson almost single handedly carried them for two quarters. 2. For whatever reason, our line and LBs started missing a ton of tackles and they took some really bad angles at times. UT deserves some credit for stepping up, but we handed them a lot of extra yards. 3. Finally, we got shafted a few times by officials. Green had a first down when he was ruled out a half yard short on 3rd down. Also, UT got away with some blatant holds in the 3rd. We may have too, but there were a couple awful ones that didn't draw a flag for the Vols.

Malone is every bit as good as Tobias in pass blocking

Where Tobias makes the difference is in the run game. Tobias gives us more push or thump than any of our OL. Malone has awesome potential, but is young. We run much better with Tobias in the game.
