2 straight games.

Great job battling back from double digits in both games.

No clutch at all.

If they would play the whole game like they play the last 5 minutes we would have won the OK, TX, and Ark games. The entire game matters.
And we’ve seen what this team looks like when they play like they care for 40 minutes. Memphis, Pitt, A&M…

Those have become outliers, though, and this team has a hard time giving collective effort for more than a few spurts every game

He got us to three straight NCAA tournaments in his first three years. Literally, no other coach in our history has done so. So, who are we bringing in to do at least that well.
It’s a valid point, but the kids getting paid to put on a uniform is just as big of an issue as his inability to adjust. At some point there was a change in tempo on the court. Guess it was mid SEC play. They’ve played with minimal or less effort more than they haven’t. That’s prob not on the coach, but something happened along the way. The body language is obvious for the last month or so. Who knows?

Correct. It’s the money they’re getting just to show up. We have average players with zero grit.

I don’t know who we bring in to do it, but I can’t help but think he’s not the only person out there that can do it. He’s not God’s gift to MSU.
I'm aware that we can and have done worse. He’s setting a precedent that we are all used to in “next year will be better!” when in reality it never does.

Making the NCAA tourney is not the feat it used to be in the power conferences anymore. With all the money being spent to build rosters and coach them. It’s akin to bowl games doubling in football. But there are fewer schools putting the amount of resources in today’s basketball to get there. Because we are in the SEC we have an advantage that used to not exist. Thanks to transfers and NIL. Nowadays it’s about advancing once there. We’ll see what we can do with this years squad. We’ve got to begin winning games in March soon.

I would say it’s either the same or actually more difficult than before because NIL has spread the talent out more. And it’s 68 teams, not 80+ like bowl games are.

If they expand the tournament then you can make that argument that it’s easier to get in but right now it’s still pretty damn hard to make the dance.

There are 35 bowl gsmes + 12 playoff teams. So 82 teams total. But a lot of those are 6-6 teams from mid major conferences. In SEC & Big 10 it’s about as easy to make NCAAT (23 teams projected) as it is to make a bowl game (25 teams).

The Arkansas game there were some glaring bad decisions made by Jans. First, no big man at all to gather rebounds. Murph should have been in there. It also led to difficult shots in the paint by our guards since there was no threat of a dish to a big. Stop using role players to close the game out!! Get the ball to Hubbard or Murphy! Twice we have tried to close out with Kugel.. WHY!?!?! He's a great player but he's not clutch. STOP IT!

Yeah I meant to edit that and forgot. Thanks.

If we want to go down this road that we can do better at head coach we would be playing a dangerous game.

As always, multiple things can be true at once.

Jans coming in and having three straight tourney trips immediately is unprecedented in our history and he deserves a ton of credit for that.

I also think it’s fair to feel like this team missed an opportunity to be better than 8-10 in the SEC and a virtual lock for an 8 vs 9 game in the NCAAT. Especially with where they were and the remaining schedule after the A&M win.

Completely agree. This is like people b*tching about Mullen. Jans is one of only 4 successful coaches in our history. We’ll be damn lucky if we can keep him. And it will be a bad day if/when he leaves.
It's never gonna be a quick fix for Msu Basketball nor football. NIL can bring players but many or sometimes it brings bad chemistry, jealously occurs which I have been told occurred this year. I think it's somewhat better, but it has created problems inside the dressing room.

Any time you bring in as many new players every year as is the norm these days, you’re going to have some problems.

It's been almost twenty years, and there's a huge difference.

But I can also remember being told we could hire any coach we wanted, get rid of the coach we had then.

I would say you can expect a little more from Jan’s without wanting to replace him. Finishing 1-4 against the easiest part of our schedule is a disappointment. And Jans definitely has some missteps this year, first of all being so stubborn on D to not adjust to guard the 3 point line. Questionable rotations at times as well. But you should be able to point that out without being lumped in with the fire him crowd.

Some of y’all are the kings of goalpost moving. We went 14 years making one tournament appearance, but now that Jans has gotten us in the tournament three straight years (something no coach has ever done in his first three seasons at State), all of a sudden it’s easier to make the tournament now than it was before. If it were that easy, why are 15 of the 18 ACC teams going to be home this season? The ACC is supposed to be the premier basketball conference and they were dogschitt this season. The reason we are making the tournament isn’t because it’s easier. It’s because we have some really good wins this season, including six road wins. Yes, the final part of the season was disappointing and a missed opportunity, but we still on the whole have had a pretty good season. Having lived through the Rick Ray fiasco and most of the Howland underachieving with talented teams into the NIT era, this three year stretch is better than we are giving it credit for.

Don’t disagree with this at all but there are some who want to move on which is silly talk.

I blame DS and his post shortly after the Texas A&M win suggesting that a higher seed was right there for the taking given the incredibly favorable remaining schedule. Of course he knew better than to post that $h!+.
