Anybody use Vroom or TrueCar or any other online car buying service before? They seem to have really good prices compared to local dealers but I'm guessing there's a catch somewhere?

It’s funny you say that. I know of a State alum who appears to be higher up in Vroom. If he was a part of that branding, you have to think he was influenced by the failed Vroom Maroon campaign.

I bought my truck from Vroom in February of this year. I recommend them. Great inventory of good, quality vehicles. Mine is a 2018, and had 19.8k miles when I bought it. The price was at least $2000 less than dealers around me for a comparable truck (same model, trim, etc.). It was a pretty easy and straight-forward process with no catches. I used my own financing from my local credit union, though, so I can't speak to anything in regards to financing through Vroom.

It took about 3 days to finalize the sale, and the truck was delivered a couple of weeks later. The truck came with a Texas temporary tag on it. The only issue I had was it took quite a while for them to send me the title after I received the truck. I think it was around 6 weeks, and I had to contact them and nudge them to send it to me.

I would buy from them again.

Thanks... One hesitation I have in talking with them is that they don't deal with registering the car and I've only had that done through the dealership in the past. How much of a hassle is it to do that on your own?

It depends on how the state you live in handles it. Each state is different. I live in AL now, and you have to go to the county courthouse (probate office) to register the vehicle and get your tag. If it is an out-of-state purchase, they have to physically inspect the vehicle and confirm the VIN. When I lived in TN, dealers handled everything on purchases. When we first moved there we just had to bring our AL registration and title to a DMV office to get them transferred to TN. It's definitely more of a hassle in AL.

No big deal at all. Four of the last 5 vehicles I bought, were all bought out of state. Just take your entire settlement paperwork package they send you, down to the tax office. They filter through what they need and get it registered.

Just rereading this and I missed the part in bold the first time... if you had your own financing, how did it take three days to finish the sale?

No personal experience but have one friend that did it and he recommends it. Only thing I've ever heard about it good or bad.

It has been a several years, but I have used Edmunds. It is like wholesale buying, but you end up going through a dealership after the price is negotiated. The way the dealer explained it to me is that he gets $500 (at the time) destination fee (I think that was name of fee) but he doesn’t have to pay a salesman. He said he sold 20-30 cars a month through them.

As I said, it been many years and things may have changed since then.

Once we settled on the car we wanted, we used TrueCar just to troll for offers. I got a better offer from an out of town (Birmingham) dealer, and I gave my local dealer (Huntsville) an opportunity to match the out the door price. Not only did they match it, but they actually pulled the exact car I was looking at from Birmingham.

Question here: if you purchase an auto out of state do you have to pay Mississippi 5% sales tax when you get you tag? Seems I heard this a few years ago, or does this apply only to new vehicle purchase?

Yes you do. MS is gonna get theirs. When I bought my current truck I got it from TN. When I went to get my tag they tack the sales tax on to it. That said, you shouldn't have to pay sales tax to the state you got it from.

It took about that long to go back and forth between my credit union and Vroom, electronically signing and sending documents between the 3 parties. Part of that lag may have been on my credit union's end. I don't quite remember the exact timeline.
