Went to the Viking Classic in Madison today and noticed a few things...
1.Everyone and there momma was in a msu dry fit type polo (i admit it, including me), with little um gear scattered amongst the crowd
2.State fans were overly freindly with many strangers making comments to me such as: tourney worker- "you can stand under this shade since your a bulldog", consession guy-"that will be 8.50, woulda been 10 if you were a rebel", and random guy "go state man, gthom"

My girlfriend does not care one way or the other (she understands she is a state fan right now, non negiotable) but she kept commenting on how funny she thought it was that random people kept saying msu related comments to me. She asked if it was always like that and I explained not really. In my lifetime I do not remember our fanbase more excited than we are right now. Damn it's better when we're winning...

most recently under JWS. Problem with JWS was that the NCAA was NEVER going to allow him to be succesful in the long run and they had MORE than willing local henchmen to insure that it didn't happen. This time we have a legit chance to establish something. I think everyone, including Dan Mullen, realizes this. Just think about it. You have the chance if you are here now and in the near future to be THE guy, at your role, for all time. That opportunity doesn't come along very much any more. THE Rockne, THE Bear, THEVaught, THE Stabler, THE Dorset, THE Garret, The Griffinth, THE Blanchard......... Think about that. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but I ( and a lot of others NOT from Mississippi)have always thought we were a sleeping giant. It CAN happen here. NOW is the time!

I live in Alabama and I get similar treatment every time I see another State fan. I'll be driving down the road and get a cowbell rung at me. Maybe it's because of all the misery that our fanbase has been through over the years, or maybe it is because we don't have as many alumni as other schools, but I feel like our fanbase is a closer-knit fanbase than others.

I feel the same way about ourfanbasebeing close-knit type of family. Its really easy to be a fan of a winner ala the Florida and Bamas in the world. MSU on the other hand have a general love for the University as a whole 365 days a year instead of 12Saturdaysduring the fall. So when you see someone with a MSU car sticker or t-shirt outside of Starkville or out of state you know they have a certain amount ofcommitmentcompared to others. As much as Auburn plays the "family" card, MSU really is one.

I must admit that it's a rather welcoming and albeit surprising feeling to see a State fan wearing MSUmemorabiliain multiple locations outside of Mississippi. Just this past month I went on a cruise to Cozumel and happened to pass by an older man wearing a MSU shirt. Normally I'm not the type to do this, but I felt compelled to give him a "Go dawgs!" as he passed each other as he promptly replied.

I've lived in North Carolina now for a few years, and it has surprised me since I got here how many State grads are here. It's been especially noticeable since the Maroon Friday push. I don't see State garb every Friday, but I probably do twice a month. And if you fly through Atlanta on a Friday it's just about a given.

A lady in the Denver Airport spotted my State shirt right after the Egg Bowl. We talked for about 10 minutes about how great it was to beat TSUN again. She was a State grad living in CO.</p>

is that it seems to be more about everything moving the right direction and not just winning at football. I've been asking people what they expect out of football this year and the highest I get is 9 wins. Most people point out that the schedule is unkind this year and 7 wins would be a good year. I think this is more a feeling that MSU sports are moving forward. We have good leadership, they are communicating with the fan base, and we are seeing some real, tangible progress in all three major sports and even in the minor ones. It doesn't hurt that we seem to have located our balls and are willing to to tell Ole Miss to go %+@% themselves whenever the feeling strikes.

I just didn't know you kept them in your cars in anticipation of seeing a State sticker on the highway so you could pick it up and shake it at them. You learn something new everyday.

as a fan to be able to carry around something that makes our fan base unique. you know, just like how mississippi fans carry a false sense of accomplishment around with them all day long.

a few days down in Orange Beach and while I obviously saw numerous State folks in their attire, one thing stuck with me. I saw TWO Relf jerseys.First, I couldn't remember the last time I saw 2 MSU jerseys being worn within 24 hours of one another that wasn't at Scott Field and secondly, that they were in Alabama in July. Also of note, one jersey was the black jersey worn by a 12 -14 yearold kid and the other was the home jersey worn by an adult male. I thought that was significant because it helps to illustrate why we wear the novelty black jersey at times to reach out to that young generation that thinks it's cool. If it gets one more jersey on a kid in Alabama in July then I'm all for it!
