Obviously you don't understand economics and/or business so...

Mattresses are a 9 B(with a B)illion dollar industry in the states. 40million units sold.

Lexington has over 120k households that we'll say has an low average of 2 beds in it. Without factoring in hotels and such in Metro Lex that is minimum of 250k beds. Replace them at your average of every 5 years. 50k mattresses per year.

These companies spend large sums of money for advertising for a reason and it's not to lose money in dying market. American's have more money to burn right now than the past 8 years. I'd say they're doing just fine.

I fully understand the magnitude of the industry, i work on hotel designs, those people don't run down to your local Sleep Outfitters to buy their mattresses. They have corporate accounts. My point was how do they justify all of the storefronts and showrooms on every street corner? When I was shopping there were never more than two other people in those stores at the time, if that. A couple of times we were the only ones in there. We shopped several stores because they were all within eyeshot of each other.

The same way car dealerships do it. The mattress business is not unlike the auto sales busniess. It's an expensive purchase that isn't made often, but it's made often enough. Like a car, some people keep their mattress for 20 yrs, and then some people get a new one every couple of years.

Hey Anth, our mattress is a Sleep EZ, not a Savvy Rest. Sleep EZ was about half the price. It was more than Casper/Leesa, but much less than a Tempurpedic.

Actually, I think hotels replace mattresses much more frequently...huge business.

Yep. I'm sure hotels are on direct national buys of some sort.

The overall market is pretty big though. Spends a ton of advertising dollars as well. Which is why they have the markup that keeps joey up at night.

Does Anth have any other reviews for mattresses he hasn't slept on?

What about Tuft + Needle?

Reviews seem to slightly favor it overall vs. Casper. Good enough for me. Need to stabilize my big fancy POS bedframe first...came with bunk *** weak wooden slats that are 5-6" apart that we've already had replaced once...Casper and similar sites recommend no more than 3" between.

May rip them out and buy a steel frame to put inside, seen a few on Amazon.

Ashley Furniture is complete ****, btw. Basically Value City with 500% markup, imo.

I'm all about budget shopping in 80% of life, but furniture is most definitely in the category of "you get what you pay for" in my experience. Makes me want to go 100% Amish...that's some solid ****.

^ English, please?

I thought IKEA was widely considered cute & fun cleverly-marketed junk, no? It's obviously a widely popular place to visit and spend money, but you're the only person I know who actually pimps it as some sort of "superior" brand/quality.

Based on what I've heard/read, always pictured it as a 'big city' Garden Ridge for people who think they're really cool. (could be way off base tho)

Trader Joe's for household items, if you will.

I'm a big proponent of Saarinen's view on objects. He essentially argued that every object produced through advent of industrial revolution is a cheap knock-off, no matter its quality. Personally, I view pretty much everything as junk.

To me, if you are not having a designer create a bed specifically for your sleeping environment, whatever you're buying instead is junk - so you might as well buy IKEA.

IKEA is a very "honest" brand that offers "honest" designs in every segment. There is a lot of solid wood products and wood veneered products to be found amongst the junk.

In my past life as a folly designer for the ultra-wealthy, I designed absurd, one-off, objects on the reg: a $17,000 concrete bathtub for instance.

Once you're involved in that world for a while, your perspective on objects is bound to be readjusted (especially with respect to showing off or keeping up with the Joneses).

Hence, IKEA is just fine for me. (my bed.)

Ok, I agree with that. Can't find our exact bed, but it's similar to this, with fancier accents & foot-posts, and a taller headboard.

Garbage

...and a complete piece of ****. $300 IKEA bed ftw from now on (with no drawers underneath...what a waste and a dog hair receptacle)

Try Louisville Furniture company in the Bluegrass industrial park next time. Selection can be hit or miss but way better than Ashley. Or step up your $$$ and go to Cherry House in Lagrange.

Not as big a fan of the memory foam. Don't like sleeping in a pocket, like being on top of the mattress. A mattress couldn't soft enough when I was younger, the older I get, the firmer the mattress, the better.
Will probably wear bermuda shorts one day soon.

Mattress manufacturers have changed the construction of them so you have to buy them more often. Now only one side is a finished product preventing flipping to prolong life of the product. They also use wood boxes or harder spring box springs that wear them out instead of acting like a shock absorber. Mattresses have a huge profit margin even if you buy them on sale its probably double the retailers cost.
Anyone with a latex mattress and has gas heat in their home is gonna be in trouble since it breaks down the foam. Changing the foam to no CFC lessened the strength but helped the ecology.
Buying a mattress is like buying shoes in that everyone has a certain feel they want out of them. Always buy a firmer mattress than what feels good as they will soften over time. The body will get accustomed to the firmness because it has more support than your old one.
If sleeping on a mattress only finished on one side spin it around every month. Any other type spin and/or flip every 90 days. 70% of your body weight is from your shoulders to your hips. Also rotate the box springs every 3 months unless it is a wooden box then your screwed.
A real good air mattress is the best buy since you can change the comfort and firmness but the ticking (cover) foam is a softer foam that will eventually break down.
Yes, I was a manufacturer of mattresses. Waiting on the jabs from BBdK and Dennis. It makes my day knowing they still remember!!!

Simmons Beautyrest Firm FTW. Just bought 2 weeks ago.

Sleepys price matched online and we got a bunch of "free" **** with it, most importantly shipping a comforter/duvet.

Worth the money thus far.

It's very upsetting as you can tell.

If you are buying furniture from a store, you are also a poor.

Lucky for you, there is no accounting for taste. Judging by your "Stickley" pick, you would be destitute. That furniture is haught garbage.

Have no idea how many of those incidents over the years I've had.

Business meetings
Romantic dinners
Family Outings
Performance reviews
Hiring/firing
Family talks

Pretty much everywhere.

We decided to spring (but not really lol) for a tempurpedic. I sleep well on it, and not very well in hotels/at the in laws, etc.

The mattress in a box intrigues me. Do think latex might be the next one. Kinda like the idea of a natural material next to me for 1/3 of my life.

A woodworker I watch religiously (Steve Ramsey on Youtube) is sponsored by Casper and that is really the only person I've heard talk about them, and obviously with them sponsoring him he has nothing but good things to say.
I watch him also but I'm not all that religious;)
