I figured that I would get this ball rolling with the CS8. Being the Titan homer I have to say that listing them with 2 loses with all the talent they have coming back is head scratching but understandable with they way the season ended. The CS8 is not a cake walk and teams that make it to the playoffs are battle tested. So here is how I see the CS8 this season:

EAST
Chatham *
Rochester*
UHigh*
DMac*
Ike
Lincoln

WEST
SHG*
Jacksonville*
SHS*
QND
Southeast
Lanphier

*Playoff qualifier

I don't know what teams are non-conference foes for each team so Im winging it with this projection.

Not sure if anyone goes undefeated with the Non-con schedules but I can see the Titans not losing a conference game. Rochester may be a year away from regaining its mojo. QND has lost a ton and may come back from fantasy to reality in 2025! Jacksonville may be the surprise team along with DMac. We will know in a few short months!

Chatham is the team to beat and has a decent chance to go 9-0 if they can knock off Edwardsville Week 1.

After the Titans, Rochester, SHG, and Springfield lead the 2nd tier of the conference and should get at least 6-7 wins. Would have also put QND in this group before their QB transferred to Quincy.

U High, QND, and Jacksonville all have a reasonable chance to get 5 wins and make the playoffs. QB development will be critical for each of these teams.

Don't see any other teams at this point getting more than 3-4 wins.

I've never been a fan of 7v7 and would have spent time in the chutes seeing who wanted to play football but that's just the dinosaur in me. Yes 7v7 is better than air but only by a gnats *** hair!!! Does this count against the 20 days the coach gets with the players during summer?

Yes it counts in the contact days and in case you haven't noticed these larger group 7on7's are going away.....I'll have more regarding this soon

All.... Back from the Titan 7 on 7. Met rocketnation and watched 3 of 6 Chatham games. QB Knoedler looked very sharp. In those three games I think I saw only one or two passes not caught. One of those the kid dropperd. Going to be an interesting year in the CS8,. Ratsy

All.... QND will have a schedule change with their home opener. Soldan has cancelled. The Raiders will now play Grandview R-2 H.S. hailing from Hillsboro, Mo. Around a three hour drive to Quincy for the Bulldogs. Ratsy

Astute...and likely. Weeks 1 and 2 will be telling for the Rockets. Two non-cons with similarly talented (maybe a tad better) teams. If RHS performs well, they'll have a good shot at showing out against GC and SHG. If they perform poorly, they'll be biting their fingernails in mid-October as a 5-4 playoff hopeful.

All.... The last time a 5-4 team did not make postseason play was 2021. 68 out of 69 qualified. The Cardinals with the worst overall playoff points did not. Never say never but the days of 5-4 teams not making it in are all but almost gone. 4 and 5 teams many of those that are not winning their conference which qualifies them for a week 10 game are even sliding in. Factors have created this. Eight man football, falling overall enrollments among others issues.

The Rockets schedule if they were to go 5-4 would have more then adequate points to continue their 2025 season. Ratsy

What a treat for some 4A South team. Go 8-1 or 9-0, earn a high seed and a home game... and get Rochester in the first round. Talk about a gut punch.

QND is back in 4A. The IHSA won't miss an opportunity to let DL kick our butts. :giggle: Although this year, unlikely, QND will also probably be coming in at 5-4 or 6-3. So we'd likely have to win a 4A 1st round game for a chance to see our old buddy Derek and his gang of airsoft assassins! (won't happen)

All jokes.

ESL has come in at 5-4 or 6-3 and reeked havoc on 6A. I feel like this happens often enough... just stinks when it's in your class. :poop:

Definitely some interesting early non-conf games in the CS8 this year. Hoping to catch a couple of them if they fall on days that aren't Friday.

My order for the must-watch CS8 non-conf games weeks 1 and 2 this year... excluding the crossover games b/t CS8 West and CS8 East.

1. Gibson Southern (IN) @ Rochester - Week 1 - Saturday, August 30
The choice here was easier once I was reminded (thank you rocketnation on another post) that Rocket Land's newest attraction will be open to the public week 1. Get there early!
Not exactly a "let's get an easy first win on the new turf" type of game. But then again that's never really been Rochester's mentality. Always fun to see local programs go out of state to test themselves, or bring out of state to them as is the case here. Regardless, should be a fantastic opening week match up.
Sidenote: For those who love to be nosey... Gibson Southern HC Nick Hart hosts a podcast, weekly, about his program. Can't wait to hear what he has to say about his trip to the Land of Lincoln in a few weeks! https://www.bashradio.com/blog/categories/the-nick-hart-show-gshs

2. Chatham Glenwood @ Edwardsville - Week 1 - Friday, August 29
I'm being told... nay, we're ALL being told that this Glenwood team is the real deal. Week 1 will help us sort some of that out for sure. A clash with annual 8A qualifier Edwardsville is a test few in the CS8 dare schedule. If Glenwood and the Colten Knoedler bomb-squad we're anticipating is more than just hype, and the Glen's defense is up for it, look for the Titans to make a statement with this one!

3. Rochester @ Mt. Zion - Week 2 - Friday, September 05
Likely more a game for MTZ to prove their worth, but also a solid test for DL and the Rockets against arguably one of the best teams in 4A South. A loss in week 1 to Gibson Southern makes this game feel even more important for playoff seeding.

4. Highland @ Jacksonville - Week 1 - Saturday, August 30
Jacksonville coming off a playoff qualifying year. 4th in the CS8-West a year ago. Solid btw, the west got 4 teams in! Highland is a stout test for most anyone week 1 downstate, but the Crimson will have their hands full in this one. A win here could have Coach Grounds thinking 1st round playoff game at home.

5. Christian Brothers (MO) @ Sacred Heart-Griffin - Week 1 - Friday, August 29
Regaining their program identity is likely at the forefront this season for the Cyclones. Last year was certainly an anomaly, surely an anomaly, right? A year older, a year wiser... I don't really think "hot seats" are a thing in smaller high school football, but if they are, Coach Allison is certainly on the hottest seat in the CS8. I don't know if a win is likely, but I definitely think this game is more competitive than it's first installment in 2024.

6. Springfield @ Champaign Central - Week 1 - Thursday, August 28
Fact: Brody Scheffler is a stud.
SHS gets their 2025 campaign underway with what should be a win. Well, bluntly, it MUST be a win.
The Senators should have playoffs on the brain with the team they have and their early schedule sets them up nicely to achieve this. Springfield's weeks 5-9 are the truest representation of meat grinder the CS8 has to offer. On the road at QND, Jax, SHG, and Rochester (IN THAT ORDER) with Glenwood at home week 9. Phew! Take a breath, it's going to be a fun year!

7. Mattoon @ Decatur MacArthur - Week 1 - Friday, August 29
The Generals are surely wanting to return to form this season. They have had a good run of top-half CS8 teams in recent years. I think we'll learn a lot in week 1. QB and OL play last year was just not enough, but the larger let down a year ago was the defense. Which is certainly the side of the ball Spates has stood on in his tenure. Possible playoff qualifier game for the Generals. No wiggle room in the schedule this season as week 2 is a trip to Springfield to face what will certainly be a very, very hungry Springfield High squad who's getting picked to finish 1st or 2nd (I'd guess) in the West.

8. Sacred Heart-Griffin @ Mascoutah - Week 2 - Friday, September 05
Mascoutah is coming off back-to-back losing seasons. The key here is whether that week 1 game against the Missouri Catholics goes SHG's way or not. If not, this week 2 game becomes a little more important for SHG.

9. Bloomington @ Normal U-High - Week 2 - Friday, September 05
U-High graduated my personal choice for CS8 POY. I'm excited to see if the past few seasons have been a legitimate leaf turning moment for the Pioneers. Bloom is always a stiff test and one of the best the Big 12 has to offer. They should be 1-0 coming into this one. Playoffs should be in the mix yet again, however, as the schedule is quite favorable for U-High in '25.

10. North St. Francois County (MO) @ Chatham Glenwood - Week 2 - Friday, September 05
Glenwood's week 1 is a giant one. This one just feels a little less crucial. Albeit, a solid test. A year ago the Titans sneaked away with a 4 point victory. I expect the margin to be wider this season, but still in favor of the Titans.

11. Grandview (MO) @ Quincy Notre Dame - Week 1 - Friday, August 29
Not much info on Grandview yet. Early guess... Raiders should pull away in this one. Placing this game here simply bc it's the only other out-of-state matchup in the conference. Also interesting to see QND's form early on this season. The loss of 2 year starting QB Hunter Schuckman is likely to cause some early hiccups. Luckily the schedule favors QND early. Crucial for QND to secure 3 wins prior to weeks 4 and 5. If they come out of week 5 at 3-2, the playoffs are definitely in the picture.

12. East Peoria @ Springfield Southeast - Week 1
Southeast's only true non-conf game in 2025. And I'm unsure the timeline, but I presume this will be the first game at the renovated stadium at SE? Hopefully the Spartans can find a win here. They play a tough stretch in the middle of their schedule.

13. Decatur Eisenhower @ Streator - Week 1 - Friday, August 29
A year ago the Panthers fell by 8 at home to Streator. A win here could set them up for a 2 or 3 win season. Momentum is a funny thing...

14. Normal U-High @ Peoria Manual - Week 1 - Friday, August 29
The Pioneers will likely go to 1-0 before their clash with the class of the Big 12.

15. Alton Marquette @ Quincy Notre Dame - Week 2 - Friday, September 05
Another crucial game for QND but only in terms of playoff qualifying. A game to work some kinks out, but a must-win game for the Raiders regardless.

***A rare 3 day opening week in the CS8 with SHS going on Thursday, a full Friday slate, and 2 games to choose from within the conf on Saturday! We should do this more often!!!

I disagree, almost entirely. But I respect your point, and maybe I just didn't explain mine very well.

At the forefront, Rochester very much deserves to be on the same line as ESL. Actually they belong higher on that list than ESL. Very few true powerhouse programs in this state... Rochester and ESL are certainly 2 of them in terms of state titles.

Also at the forefront, QND hasn't even been to a state title game. Tough to understand that part of your statement. But thanks for the respect! We'll take it baby!

My point was simply that it's not uncommon for a team of Rochester's caliber to go 5-4 or 6-3 and blow up a bracket because they aren't where we think they should be or where they more than likely should be based on talent level. This happens up in the CCL a lot I feel like. Maybe not a lot, but certainly often. Those guys beat each other up all year long and then one lucky team that took their lumps in the league gets a blessing come seeding time. I will agree, however, that this is certainly not something that happens often in 4A south.

I guess QND has "that one time" we could use as an example. They squeaked into 2A south at 4-5 a couple years ago and beat 9-0 Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond in the 1st round. But got humbled by NashVegas, Illinois in round 2.

Enjoyed the summary.

Was not aware that Jacksonville/Highland Week 1 contest is scheduled for Saturday night.

This gives me the potential for seeing an unprecedented 4 Week 1 games in person. Thursday, Springfield @ Central. Friday, Chatham @ Edwardsville. Might get my wife to attend that one if we go to Bella Milano first. Saturday afternoon, Gibson IN @ Rochester. Saturday night, Highland @ Jacksonville.

A great start to the season.

Bingo!

Bango!

Bongo!

And Bingo again!!!!

I had to double check that when I saw it first, rocket. My gears started spinning immediately thinking about all the football I could potentially watch in the first week!

As far as the CS8 goes and its history against EStL all are lacking against the Flyers. There is a mystique with the Flyers and its been there since the late 70s when I started to keep up with HS football. I know Chatham was down something like 27-14 late in the 3rd, at home, last season against ESt.L and ended up losing by a boat load. I couldn't tell ya what happened because I couldn't watch the game since I saw the final score. What I do know is until teams get this "mystique" about EStL out of their heads they will not be successful! Maybe they should pay Cary Grove's coach a visit and talk shop because Cary Grove isn't... afraid of, or scared of EStL.

Take the top 5 teams in the CS8 history and before they still would get manhandled by EStL. The teams in Illinois that have EStL's number are Chicago Mt Carmel and Cary Grove while all others are only wishing they could have success against the Flyers.

I was at last year's playoff game. As impressive as the Flyers offense was that day, the defense played with a combo of speed and physicality that you just don't see in the CS8. I was particularly impressed with how the Flyers defended the pass. Everything was contested and if Chatham caught the ball, multiple defenders closed quickly and hit hard. Several of the hits made me wince from the sidelines.

I said previously on the old site that the '19 Titans, who also lost to East St Louis in the playoffs, were as good as many of the Rocket or Cyclone championship teams. They rolled through the CS8 that year beating everybody by at least 24 points. Their QB went on to win two Division 3 national championships. IMO, they were better than the '24 Titans. As good as the '19 team was, they were also outmatched against the Flyers trailing 28-0 at half before losing 50-28.

Luke Lehnen was a player you don't see very often. Yes the 2019 team was scary good but the 2018 team was much, much more physical and had it not been for a BS call up at Crete-Monee I think we would have won some hardware! The thing about Luke was he was and is very humble and good natured! He is obviously the best QB I've ever been around. Kids today don't practice, workout or prepare as hard as Luke did. Very driven and sharply focused!

A few observations after looking at the IHSA schedule.

Quickest Path to 5 Wins: Springfield. It will be very surprising if the Solons don't start 4-0. Week 5 is a tougher test at QND, but they are the favorite now and QND also has to develop a new QB. After that, however, the Solons have a "Death Valley" stretch of games Weeks 6-9 at Jacksonville, at SHG, at Rochester, and Chatham.

Best Non-Conference Schedule with an Eye to the Playoffs: Tie between Chatham and SHG. Chatham travels to and plays up against 7A/8A Edwardsville Week 1 and then gets an above average Missouri team that tested them last year Week 2 at home. SHG takes on a powerhouse Christian Brothers (MO) at Home and then travels to Mascoutah who was 4-5 last year but returns a lot of starters.

Darkhorse to Start 2-0: Southeast. They get East Peoria at home Week 1 in their newly renovated stadium. The Spartans let one get away on the road last year losing 28-26 after leading much of the game. Week 2, they travel to Lincoln. The Railers won easily last year 41-20, but I think the Spartans are trending up somewhat while the Railers may be down a bit.

Whose Win Total Could Surprise (Good): Tie between Jacksonville and QND. After reviewing their schedule, I only see one game where the Crimsons are the clear underdog. An 8 and 1 record is not out of the question, though 7 and 2 more likely. Although graduation hit the Raiders hard along with the loss of their starting QB transferring to Quincy, QND still has a reasonable chance to go 7-2.

Whose Win Total Could Surprise (Bad): Springfield. How is this possible if they have the clearest path to a 5-0 start? If the Solons are upset early in the season by either MacArthur or QND, they could end up with only 4 wins. Not likely but the back-end part of their schedule is brutal.

Marquis Game of the Week:
Week 1- Chatham at Edwardsville
Week 2- Bloomington at U High/Rochester at Mt Zion (TIE)
Week 3- SHG at Jacksonville
Week 4- Chatham at Rochester
Week 5- Springfield at QND
Week 6- Springfield at Jacksonville/U High at Chatham (TIE)
Week 7- Jacksonville at QND
Week 8- SHG at Chatham
Week 9- Rochester at SHG

I agree with Jacksonville. 3 tough games so 7-2 is a good possibility. QND has 3 cupcake teams so getting another win or two shouldn't be a tall task. I curious about the maturation of Ike. Will they finally get a few wins?

Ike returns a QB with some experience and a 1,000-yard rusher. They struggle with low program numbers and their defense gave up 40 or more points in all but one game last season. I'm curious if they can be more competitive at the least compared to '24 or possibly pull off an upset in either Weeks 4 or 5, versus MacArthur and Lincoln.
