Chad Voytik-Pittsburgh QB-Grad Transfer lists UK as possible

UK along with Indiana, Memphis and Vanderbilt were listed as possible transfer destinations. He was the starting PITT QB in 2014 and put up decent stats: 60% completion rate, 16 TD's and 2200 yards and rushed for 466 yards and 3 TD's

In 2015 Pitt hired former Tennessee OC Jim Cheney who brought with him his former QB recruit Nate Peterman who "won the open competition" in the summer and was PITT QB this year.

Maybe a name to keep an eye on.....He is from Cleveland TN and was recruited by Vandy and Memphis out of High School.

New QB coach Darin Hinshaw is familiar with him from him time at UT.

I think it's pretty obvious the staff knows Barker needs some QB competition or a capable backup. Either a JUCO or Grad Transfer seems imminent.

In 2014, he threw 16 TD's & 7 Int's with only 1 Int coming in the final 6 games. 4.3 yards per carry. Former 5.9 4 star. Hmm...

I guess the only negatives that I see...

1) Only eligible for 1 year.

2) An article says that he won't graduate until April, so he'd miss spring practice.

If he would join the program the staff should take him and still take the JuCo QB Johnson. Even with only one year remaining that is all you would need from him to make it possible to Redshirt Gunnar Hoak. Also it would give you 3 D-1 caliber QBs. It also can't hurt that he would automatically have the most experience against D-1 talent.

To anyone that thinks having good back up QBs isn't important. Just ask the Dallas Cowboys how important it is.

Has UK even contacted him or is this just somebody saying that UK had 2 QBs transfer so maybe he would go there? It would be hard to come in the fall and win the starting job anywhere.

I do not agree with this. Johnson, Hoak and Barker are likely to learn from Gran all spring. I anticipate Barker or Johnson being the starter even if this transfer takes place.

Biggest negative is he lost his starter role to Peterman.

OP implied that Voytik losing his starting role was a product of bias towards the recruit from the OC when they both arrived at Pitt.

Yes, it could be. But, it sounds like that competition might have been stacked against him, at least somewhat. He said that he thinks that it was possible as he looks back. Sour grapes or the truth?

IDK about the competition & none of us do, but things like that do happen.

We will have to agree to disagree. This kid put up some very solid numbers, both running & throwing, against the ACC, 2 years ago. He should only be better now, as he has matured. IMHO, it would be an upset if he got beat out. The biggest thing stacked against him is missing spring practice & that certainly would be a plus for Johnson & Barker. Only time will tell & he may not even come to UK.

Wow, this whole 5th year, grad transfer has become a big deal in college sports hasn't it. Interesting possibility. No doubt we need a viable backup, and someone to provide Barker with some true competition. Competing for a starting job is a big part of college football, and as we know it makes everyone better. UK needs to get to the point we have that at every position. That's the way it is at all of the high profile, elite programs, and some of us refuse to give up on the dream that it could be the way it is in Lexington.

Yes it has and even though we brought one in last year I don't like it. Was only 1 ever year or 2, now its pratically double digits every year.

I think it is imminently fair. Kid graduates, but has eligibility left, another school agrees to offer a scholly for that eligibility so the kid can attend grad school. The only problem with the rule is they ridiculously require the kid to find an area of study not offered at their original college. That is a joke! Shame on fans and coaches who want to eliminate this rule.

Teams are not allowed to contact him. He must reach out to the school. My feeling is he probably looked at the landscape of football, saw the UK had a possible starting position open and contacted us.

He seems like an avg QB. He would only be here for 1 year. He will take practice and possibly some game snaps away from other guys that will be here the year after. Unless he's a great QB I think you pass on him. It could also cause some locker room issues as well. If Johnson doesn't commit, then maybe he's a take.

I agree with both of you. In many cases, the transfer is actually interested in pursuing a masters degree and knows they have no shot at the NFL, but if they want to get an MBA, they can't because their original school offers that.

UK needs a viable quarterback, not just a viable backup.

If a dude like this is willing to come to UK in order to compete for the starting job, you'd be a fool not to allow that.

However, would a 5th year guy actually transfer to a place where he isn't all but guaranteed the job? I seriously doubt it and this kid just isn't someone that would get that from UK unless Barker was gone as well.

I don't think it's a lock that Barker is the starting QB next year, his off the field and maturity issues are a real concern. UK cant put all of their eggs in Barker's basket, that would be stupid.

Go to win now. This guy may bring the experience we need at the spot to be a difference maker. You fools saying let the young guys develop: hogwash! We as fans need a win now mentality. Nothing will change until we hold folks to higher standard

Another thing: Where is UK going to get an opening for a 3rd QB scholarship slot - Hoak & Johnson already - in this class with pressing needs elsewhere?

My guess is we will sign 28 this year. Currently at 22/23 depending on what Smith does today.

Re Smith....I posted elsewhere that another site is reporting there's a mistake on his credits and he won't be committing/reporting early.

Didn't work out too well for Oregon this year did it? Still ACC to SEC wouldn't be as big a jump as from E. Wash. to the Pac 12. I think it probably works best when a guy say goes from Georgia to a Mountain West program like CSU. I'm hopeful the young man from UGa who's decided to come out to Fort Collins, and be paired again with his old OC might make a difference for the Rams. At the very least he'll provide that competition to the returning junior starter who did improve the last part of the season as the Rams won their last 4 to get bowl eligible. BTW I think CSU made another excellent hire in Bobo. Hopefully he works out as well as McElwain did.

It worked out very well for Oregon this year. They lost 4 games, all of which VAJ had a broken finger, did not play or left in the first half due to injury. Had Adams not played, they would not have even gone to a bowl game.

He needs to tell our staff, then, whether he is coming to UK. If he burns a spot and signs with USCjr, that will be ugly.
