Chief Brown Commits to Ole Miss

Either way, this is not a big deal. Chief really wants to play at MSU, but the coaches want to get him on campus and see if he plays RB or WR, or if he just isn't either of those. We don't have room for guys that are in between this year. This one will work itself out.

He'll be one of only about 25 guys on the team who came here after being told they would run it.
we do need WR's though. It kind of concerns me that we have a need there, yet Tobias Singleton, Nick Brassell, and Joe Morrow are not likely to sign with us.
Unless there are some other guys out there that are good that we can get, it seems like a guy like Chief could help us.

Early 2010 - MSU Scout board: Chief is great, we were the first to offer we got a jump on %%%+, I really hope he pulls the trigger for MSU, we need a RB like him. Ole Miss Scout Board: Chief isn't that good, we are after bigger fish, we haven't offered and probably won't.
Spring 2010 after Chief does well at camps - MSU Scout Board: When is Chief committing? He is the real deal at these camps, he is going to look great in Maroon!!!! Ole Miss Scout Board: Chief is still not that good, but we may have screwed up by not recruiting him earlier, thank god we fired that coach that was responsible for his recruitment, we still haven't offered.
Today after Chief may have committed to OM - MSU Scout Board:We never actually offered him a firm scholarship, and he jumped at the only chance he had ata Division I school, can't really blame the kid, it was probably between%%%+ and Delta State. Ole Miss Scout Board: We just got a commitment from aRB that is like a combination ofDex and McAllister. Best RB in MS this year, and probably should be rated 4 stars!!!!
When he goes to MSU's camp, and he flips or back off, it will be interesting to see what happens then.

Chief is a good player, but not elite. Based on the number of threads he has had on the lake, you would think he is the top RB or WR in the state. He's pretty far from either.
Yeah, it sucks if we lose out on a pretty decent guy that wants to play at MSU, but I'm pretty certain that the staff is looking at the list and he probably is not that high up there as a WR in our system based on what they know today. Guys like this need to get on campus for evaluation. It's too bad if he can't wait until after camps to make a decision.
This is the same situation with the QB's this year. We are not going to get a top QB, so we need to get the guys on campus and see how their particular skills fit into our system. If they can't wait it out through camps, that's too bad.

It's 17ing JUNE. Some of these guys will change their minds half a dozen times before February. I hadn't even heard of Chief Brown until yesterday. One of the best decisions I've ever made (relative to inconsequential things like sports and recruiting) was to ignore recruiting until late January/early February. I've not been disappointed on Signing Day since. I highly recommend this tactic.
It's going to be unfortunate that we may not pull any of the top-5 when the in-state class is so deep and we have such a big need at the position. You guys will probably pull 2 or 3 of the top 5. LSU, Bama, even Oklahoma will pull the others. We might grab one.
Brown could help, but we have shots at Brassell, Morrow, Pickston, Moncrief, Ryan Byrd, Fosselman, Gabe Grey, and Paul Turner. We have RB / WRs in LaDarius Perkins and Matthew Wells. We have slot guys in Bumphis and Brandon Heavens. We need tall and fast outside receivers. I'm sure we are going to be looking at JUCOs to fill in again.

So let me get this right. State is not going to sign any of the other recievers in Brassell, Singleton, Moncrief and Morrow but they badly need several recievers. While Ole Miss has a great shot at atleast three of those recievers they still find Chief to be an asset to have. Then right now at the same time Mullen doesn't think he can use Chief. I say this to say that Chief was told by Ole Miss that he will be a safe or olb and that they would offer him for that position and in the end he got the scholarship he has wanted for a while now. I know Hudspeth was shocked when he called Winona's head coach this morning.
It's a long time until signing day, G. Maybe ole Melvin can change the guy's mind. Know what I'm saying?
