Why is it news that Kelly is implementing healthier eating for the Eagles players? I am baffled that the NFL franchises don't all have a team of nutritionists and exercise physiologists following every move of a player during camp and the season. I would expect heart rate monitors, tests for VO2max, and any other possible analysis that is legal for them to do.
Apparently they have player specific smoothies made after each practice. Seems logical and smart to me.
Of course it would be hard to monitor food intake but we are't talking about a team of Renardos. They should already be motivated to eat well.
Discuss.
Everyone is blowing this out of proportion. He banned "taco tuesdays" at the team's cafeteria... Each team does have nutritionists, but it's ultimately up to the player to take care of himself. That's why there are optional team workouts that players can choose to come to or ignore completely. At the end of the day your incentive is getting non-guaranteed money and staying in the league longer. If you don't want to eat healthy and the only thing stopping you from doing so is a nutritionist or a coach saying you can't eat tacos on-site immediately following practice, you're going to eat unhealthy.
I understand your point but an NFL team can't force their players do to jack **** (cough cough Revis). Chip Kelly banning tacos at the practice facilities and banning music other than his own playlists full of techno and 90's ****-rock is the textbook definition of the difference between NCAA and NFL coaches, and will likely be the reason he exits stage left in Nick Saban fashion in 2-3 years.
He's not dealing with 18-23 year olds who need guidance and motivation. He's dealing with professionals, and his techniques are bush league tactics that work in college... not the NFL.
ETA: I get what he's doing. That team is garbage but has some potential. Instead of being the long dick of the law he needs to do what Sean Payton and many like him have done and find an All-Star on their roster who people look up to
as a peer and have him or a group of veterans hold everyone accountable. It's possible to bring a culture and out-of-the-box offense to a team without putting your foot down. It would likely extend his stay to not do so.
