I'm hoping a medium sized chrome cowbell from a different source might sound better. (don't remember where I got mine, though)

I was going to put a Mack truck bulldog on my chrome cowbell but haven't gotten around to it. Still have the bulldog.

best way to make a cowbell sound better is weld the seams on the side, then it will be a solid piece of metal. I bought one from my cowbell and when i got it, it was already chipped. My bell also flew out at the first game. I have been experimenting with all this, at our shop at work. I want to get mine powder-coated. No More Chips. Also the thicker the metal it is made from the better, it will be heavy but sound awesome

also, if you want to get one chromed, the best way to do it is go get it chromed at a chrome shop, much cheaper than donating and they can do it however you want

I bought a large bell from a feed store and sent it to Jackson Plating Company (electroplating company in Jackson, MS). Talked to them on the phone beforehand and arranged everything. They did some engraving for me prior to plating it. I even found a silver dollar-sized MSU coin with the seal on it and they fixed it to the side opposite the engraving. Looks beautiful and is loud as hell the couple of times its been in the stadium.

I don't remember the total cost exactly but remember being surprised how little I spent for a cool gift.

You're absolutely right about migwelding up the sides. It will make the sound better. The spotwelds don't work quite as well. I've learned my lesson and will make that change on my next shipment (which will be awhile).

My WHITE cowbells are powder coated and have a fantastic finish. Very durable. Drop it on concrete? No problem. It's like your stovetop finish.

As for the thickness of the metal, you have to find that happy medium between too heavy and too thin. I think with the migweld up the sides, you'll be perfectly happy with the sound even with the lighter steel.

You'll want need to weld the seams if you want to get a "ring" instead of a "clank". The sound is just a personal preference, plus, it looks better. Mine is pretty heavy, but I made the handle length such that Mack truck hood ornament balances it nicely. It has a MSU seal on one side and one of our "new" logos on the other. The Kang signed one bell just over the seal. I'm thinking about getting Jack to sign the other bell.
