good read ... I like Bonner, he's much better than Marshmellow was ..... I would think we are hopeful on Cory Thomas even though he's still a soft verbal to UT ... then maybe a miracle recruit like M Humphrey

I'd be shocked if we actually bring in 23 players. We've only currently got room for 16-18 -- and Mullen never oversigns by more than a couple. Now -- we may place a few of these guys in the current class this year...

With Milton and (possibly) Quay transferring, that is 2 more spots that are open. I wouldn't be surprised to see us take a full 23. Natural attrition will probably open up a few more spots.

I believe it's been stated on the recruiting sites that there are 2-3 commits right now that will probably be sign and place guys. But most of them also believe we sign 23 or so players in February and make the necessary adjustments in rooster this spring and summer. Milton is already a transfer, Bohanna may end up medical, Quay is up in the air, Harrison-Gay I think redshirted this year or last and may be up in the air, Walley had a pretty bad injury and some rumblings with him. I'm sure they will make the numbers work and every indication is they are trying to find a way to fit JT Gray into this class and also prepare just in case a big fish decides to jump on board.

Some attrition is good. There are always a couple in any signing class that turn out to be non-SEC contributors. Those NEED to be moved along to either transferring or dropping football. Harrison-Gay for example is a guy that realisticly is never going to contribute at this level so its not good he is eating up a scholly. We need to ALWAYS be in position to sign over 20 players for a class and when you have non-contributing players staying on a roster for 4 to 5 years that is NOT a good thing because you cut off your ability to bring in new and better talent.

I'm aware..

I just put it in the MSU Recruiting thread bc I didn't think it warranted its own thread. I didn't do a good job of replying though

"Some" attrition is one thing.

We've only got 10 graduating seniors. As of today, we return 69 scholarship players for next year. There is room for 16 players to sign and be under the 85 limit.

If we sign and enroll the full 23, there are 7 more players that have to be processed. Really tough to find that much dead weight in our program right now -- that this group of freshmen are virtually guaranteed to be better than.

I don't know for sure but from what I've seen it was never going to be a big class even though we may sign 23 or so players it seems 2-3 are going to be sign and place commits so that gets it down to an attrition rate of 4-5 at most. With Milton transferring that's down to 3-4. Attrition is one thing we have never had much of which speaks well of the players buying into the program for the most part.

"Sign and place" seems outdated at this point -- since you essentially burn the possibility of using that scholarship next year. We may place several of those guys -- but I would be shocked if more than 1-2 of them(that we hope/think we can get into MSU) actually end up signing with us.

How does that burn a scholly next year if they are at Juco?

It's been outdated since the territory rule went out the window.

With the way we redshirt guys and have 100 HB's, CB's, and whatever I don't think it's such a bad idea to sign at-risk guys and let them go to JUCO. Slay worked out VERY well for us, and while Samuel went to a prep he is looking the same way... Could have easily gone to UGA had he qualified.

Gets us in the door with these guys (cough cough Chaney) and keeps the wheels grinding on JUCO recruiting. Get Donald in the ear of a highly recruited teammate. I just read where the OL we already signed is bringing his RB with him as a walk-on.

In the new recruiting rules, once they actually sign the scholly, it counts against the class regardless of whether or not they show up. Against the 25, but not the 85, in other words. That prevents the spot from being able to be counted back by an EE in the next class and essentially wastes the scholarship altogether...

Engie, are you 100% sure on this?? I am by no means trying to question YOU. I just have not heard this yet. This rule sucks for Ole Miss and MSU who have to take some grade risks at times that the big boys don't necessarily have to.

if they sign a LOI, they count in the 25 from Dec 1 - May ??

Now, we could be helping these guys find JUCOs to sign with, and saying we will re-recruit them after their 2 years.

But I don't think we would knowingly sign a guy who ISN'T going to qualify. We will risk it, for guys who are close and talented (WR Donald Gray comes to mind), but if we know they aren't going to make it in, don't see any point in letting them sign a LOI.

2014 Roster

Just putting this out there so everyone can understand the limit on this signing class. I count 68 including Quay (is he for sure out?). This does not include Fitzgerald or Johnson who are already enrolled. Also does not include Beckwith, who may now be on scholarship. I can easily identify 3 or 4 that I wouldn't mind losing before next fall. In that case we would be able to enroll around 20 total.

QB, 2 - Prescott, Williams
RB, 3 - Griffin, Robinson, Shumpert
WR, 10 - Lewis, Johnson, Chappelle, Morrow, Brown, Wilson, Holloway, Ross, Hammond, Christy
TE, 6 - Johnson, Hill, Warren, Walley, Samuel, Holmes (may move back to LB)
OT, 5 - Robinson, Clausell, Senior, Thomas, Flowers
OG, 4 - Muniz, Malone, Carter, Clayborn
C, 2 - Day, Desper
DT, 8 - Jones, Eulls, Virges, Jones, Evans, James, Adams, Washington
DE, 5 - Smith, Harris, Brown, Jefferson, Simpson
OLB, 5 - Wells, Jackson, Brown, Bell, Harris
MLB, 2 - McKinney, Brown
CB, 8 - Love, Cox, Calhoun, Jiles, Redmond, Cleveland, Myles, Irvin-Sills
S, 7 - Arrington, Evans, Coman, Wells, Hughes, Market, Antoine
K, 1 - Bell
