Where did you spend your few months? Jackson Mall dumpster enclosure? Living under the I-20 overpass on Highway 80?

I've lived in Jackson or the Jackson area for years and I still apparenlty don't realize how bad it is.

You are correct. Unfortunately for Jackson, I can't think of any of benefits that would justify actually living there. Not taking a stab, but I live in Madison for a reason and it isn't related to pineapples or having my nose in the air. It's because I grew up in Clinton, saw what sharing a border with Jackson could do for a City, and when I moved back to the area I chose to not be in, or adjacent to, Jackson.

What strikes me about this thread is the vastly different and polarized views people seem to have about Jackson. To some its a demilitarized zone where no peson can enter without running the risk of being the victim of a crime. To others, often those who live there, its a city that certainly has its problems, including high crime areas, but also has plenty of good places to live, shop, and work, including opportunities not available in suburbs or rural areas.

For full disclosure, I'm part of the second group, and believe that those in the first group, while well meaning and sincere, are making decisions based on emotion rather than data and are therefore simply mistaken.

Just wait til the Sams is built by the theater in Madison and they close the one off county line road. There goes dropping your kids off at the movies. This move by Mayor Mary is a real head scratcher.

Being in Jackson is like not wearing a seatbelt. Most likely you'll be OK. Nearly everybody that drives a car every day never has an accident. But why take the chance. When something does go wrong, your odds of a good turnout drop like a Franklin at The Library on crootin weekend.

Now it's debatable whether the sales tax revenue offsets the negative impact.

"Head scratcher" without context was probably a little misleading.

To yours and Shmuleys point..I realize the financial benefits to the parties involved. I also know there have been commercial as well residential proposals ('nice' apt complexes) pitched that probably offered financial incentives in the past that were shot down. This decision to bring SAMs in while also closing the one on county line makes me wonder what may be coming down the pipe in the future. Thats what im scratching my head over (or rubbing my chin with thumb and index finger). Lets face it..this ain't bringing Costco into Franklin, Tn with Brentwood to the north and Nashville to the north of that. And yes Shmuley, I'm thinking along the lines of negative impact. As I said previously, that movie theater may be the first to feel it. Anybody been to the northpark movie theater recently? Me neither.

That is the grey area that was not clearly stated before and open to judgement in certain situations.

I still don't think we will see more people brandishing side arms. Its good to have the law more clearly defined with less interpretation.

I don't want anyone knowing I have a gun on me. It has crossed my mind that some crazy people may try to snatch a gun away from someone open carrying.

I'm not a Jackson hater, just putting the risk/reward on the balance and I felt that for me personally, Madison was the place...County that is. I don't live in Madison "The City"...not that I'm a hater of it either. Considerations were: Kids/schools/property values/potential for elected buffoons to screw up property values or jack up taxes thus making it difficult to sell if I wanted, etc. All that being said, I'm not proud of our representation here either, but I tend toward general elected official cynicism regardless of political affiliation, government branch, etc.

My take was based on the fact that Mayor Mary would put a car junk yard right in the middle of town if enough swag was passed around into the right pockets.

People exagerate, but you probably don't realize how many people live in areas where they not only don't have to worry about their car getting broken into, but routinely leave their cars or houses unlocked without incident. Even the nicer parts of Jackson like Belhaven and Fondren have petty crime rates that most people would either find unacceptable or would expect that in exchange for dealing with the petty crime, that the area would offer more (such as being walking distance to entertainment and restaurants) than anywhere in Jackson really offers.

Fantastic hyperbole and sample size aside, I'm not convinced. Is there some sort of known connection between Sam's locations and crime like there is with casinos or something?

I took a wrong turn and had to go through Gary, Indiana a couple of years ago. I actually thought I was in a third world country.

Not really debatable at all. I live in Madison and my property taxes are very reasonable WITHOUT a lot of retail business.

Is Jackson for everybody? Not at all, that's why we have the suburbs. That's also why the city went from about 300k residents to 180k from the early 90s to now. But for someone like me who works in downtown and has a wife in med school at UMMC, Belhaven is perfect. Also, having restaurants like Babalu, Rooster's, Brent's, Basils, Pizza Shack, Walker's, etc. is way better than your typical chain places (I know the suburbs have good spots, too).

Does Jackson have a million problems? **** yeah, it does. Is the new mayor a racist moron? Absolutely. But let me know you - I lived in a nice, historic neighborhood near downtown St. Louis for a year in 2011/2012 and feel much safer here than I did there. It's not for everybody, like I said, but a lot of people do love it (I'm only speaking for Belhaven and Fondren).

Side note: I do not speak for Belhaven Heights or anything directly off of North State Street.

What's happening in our capitol city is really sad. I just heard about the...

guys who got robbed at gunpoint at the church on Ridgewood Dr. At some point, when it becomes like Mogadishu, the state legislature will HAVE to step up and take control of security. There ARE precedents...New York, Washington D.C. When it becomes bad enough, even the most liberal among us will have to admit...this HAS to be fixed. If not, the tax base will eventually disappear, leaving a husk of ruins.
