Hm. Not sure how I feel about this. It's not like we have been killing in recruiting these past couple years. OTOH, the recruits we do have seem to really like Barthel.

I think our troubles with recruiting had more to do with Flood than Barthel, with that said I'm going to support whoever Ash brings in, I'm all in.

I hope we keep ej...but first hire?

How about an OC?

Already with the drama...
Drama? I'll assume you were joking.

OC and DC will come, but keeping in touch with potential recruits, committed and uncommitted is key to begin, particularly, if you aren't familiar with the territory and you've got someone who is doing well in that category. When the OC and DC get here the RC will start refining who we target.

I actually was not joking. But in rereading your post I realize that I owe you an apology. I guess there is so much drama with some of these other posts I pulled yours into them as well. For that I am sorry.

That said I still think getting our coordinators nailed down is more important than the recruiting coordinator. I think ash can tell EJ that he will make the decision soon and let things play out. While recruiting is obviously critical I want this guy to get our coordinators right. Of course we can do both at the same time but if someone is telling me who the next hire has to be I'm saying it's got to be offensive coordinator. Not the recruiting coordinator.

EJ Barthel. Need to understand NJ recruiting and Barthel knows it. Keep Harbaughs paws off of him.

Just out of curiosity, why does he have to understand NJ recruiting? Not trying to pick a fight here, just wondering what the difference is in recruiting NJ as compared to Ohio, Georgia, Florida...all places Ash has battled against big-time schools for players? What makes NJ so different compared to the other mega-talented states I mentioned?

Some recruits . Get some gym bags full of cash and get to work . Barchi said money would not be an issue . No better way to spend it on say a stud defensive tackle or lockdown corner .

NJ is a very awkward state and has a very unique HS football landscape. It is almost like different states compacted into the most densely populated state in the country. You are going to need someone on staff who has a knack for getting elite NJ kids on campus alot from different parts of the state which isnt an easy task for someone who isn't familiar with the place. This is why Harbaugh hired Chris Partridge and this is why Ash would need a well connected E.J Barthel type person on deck to help him out.

Thanks - I do agree OC and DC hires are extremely critical as that will define style of play, which in turn will define recruits to fit system. Maybe just a chicken and egg problem at this time. Seems like he can keep Barthel for a year and see how he does (just a matter of retaining him), and at the same time zone in on OC and DC. As for OC, I did not think McDaniel was all that bad and wonder if Ash may have a connection with him via virtue of being at Ohio State. Of course he could just go for someone he's worked with before. For DC I expect someone new for sure.

As for current assistants, I hope Norris Wilson, Jim Pangoes and Anthony Campanello get a chance to stay.

My thoughts:

He hasn't produced, YET, but was that ONLY because of Elmer? I think this is the one guy I could be convinced into keeping on the staff.

New Jersey tends to eat their own. Not a ton of state pride amongst athletes to stay home. Off all of our teams, Wrestling and Womens Soccer are making the most progress right now, but we need Football and Basketball to step up, and both programs have not had that success since the 1970s.

Gotcha. Thx for reply. Like I said...was just curious. Makes sense. And to answer the other question...I've been to NJ once in my life..for 2 days in A.C. I vaguely remember meeting your fellow New Jerseyans...met a bunch of friends for a bachelor party. Left there broke, with a bad tattoo, and voraciously hung over. Oh to be 28 again...lol.

FU is a way of saying hi to someone there. It's just different. I'm sure he is smart enough to get a few guys with Jersey ties. Not too many though.

Honestly you keep him so you have some recruiting consistency, and because he is supposedly key in keeping Russo committed. If you ditch everyone, you are walking into high schools introducing yourself.
