I am shocked he’s recruited as well as he has being like that. I didn’t think kids these days would put up with a coach like that honestly. Kinda refreshing in some ways seeing there are some tough minded kids out there but he doesn’t have to be such a prick all the time.
I don't know. I'm all for a coach that doesn't care to call you a idiot if need be. You have to be a little tough and push them or you won't get the most. I had coaches like that and it does help build you up, IF it is done right. Its like tough love. But if you are just constantly berating without any or little positive actions then it's just a guy being a jerk.

You can't tell me his coaching staff and team aren't silently judging him for pretty much sealing their fates yesterday. I would actual gain some respect for the guy if he would come out and take responsibility. A simple "I got caught up in the emotion and I need to do better" is fine. Just show me that you are capable of taking responsibility. But nope just more finger pointing.

I'm for any coach being who they are. It's not about whether opposing fans like you or not. It's about how you need to operate to get results. If your demeanor is fiery, all gas no brakes, be that way. If you are calm, relaxed, etc...be that way. Whatever functions for you to get your team to play at a high level and succeed, be genuine.

One interesting thing I remember during the '23 season is that Hurley's team told him to cut that rage at refs crap out and he listened. The players told him he was becoming a distraction and losing focus. I actually don't see him get too upset during NCAA Tournament games--he's usually a psycho early in season and as it progresses, he'll focus on task at hand.

As for what people say they like etc...it's up to what you individually like. I've always worked for guys like Pope who are calm and don't get into any discussion with the officials but we piss them off because don't have our players dap them up before games either. It's hilarious how they all want you to kiss their ***--we are just there to play. They make calls, our players/staff don't talk to them at all about calls and just play. Then you get a few against you because they want you to be BS'ing with them and it's pathetic. My boss and I always say your job is to officiate, not be noticed. Our job is to coach our team, and our players job is to play the opponent. Too much recognition and BS is coveted in sports.

Earlier in the game, the UConn medical staff got a Tech. LOL So the behavior of the program is all gas, no brakes and that sustains for a short window. You just eventually wear down-which is fine and approach is great if you are just planning on short term stint. It could be even shorter if he starts losing his staff to HC jobs. Hard to find guys who will work for someone so maniacally intense. His practices are insane compared to most teams-yelling at staff members, support staff, and brutally honest with players (which is the best part of his personality IMO). It's really not for everyone unlike the crap Cal spews.

Only way Hurley goes NBA is if he wants to coach at another University and that's his way of leaving UConn. I think his wife is very smart and perfect partner in she knows him and how he is and what fits him best. That is what most should seek in a marriage. Some mocked him for being "whipped" when really that smart end of the partnership chose comfort/fit over chasing higher profile/attention. Hurley could never be successful in the NBA. He's not wired for it and players couldn't handle him nor could he handle their bull**** me first nonsense. He would burn out by January in an NBA job. He's a college coach.

I respect him, don't care for the antics but he does coach his team hard and he and his staff recruit guys who can take their approach which isn't for everyone. What they've done the past 2 yrs is about as impressive as anything I've seen in approaching 5 decades of watching the sport. I don't think they'll get a 3rd title but I don't think they suck either. Just think the field is more even and eventually you can't keep winning in the format when you lose the talent he has over the last 2 yrs. That said...I do think they are an Elite 8 type of team and whomever beats them will have to play well to do so which is all you want from any coach/program. It's why we were worn down watching Cal-you didn't have to play that well, just needed to hang around and let Cal's teams self destruct. So think we'd see people embrace the coaching/toughness if he took the job (he was never taking this job though) and it's why so many of us are enjoying Mark Pope and Staff's approach and results.

Good coach but doesn't change the fact he's an asshat clown
Why would any sane caring parent send their kid to play for that lunatic?? If he treats the officials that way how does he treat his players in closed practices. Meanwhile CMP practices a gratitude circle at the end of each practice. I know where I would send my kid.

There is absolutely a difference in being a perfectionist and holding a kid accountable for excellence and looking out of control on the sidelines. Hurley crossed the line into unhinged yesterday.

People know what they are getting with Hurley. He wins so that's all that matters.

Someone said he's gonna fade away like Cal. I doubt it, as Hurley is a lot better coach than Cal ever was.

If he sticks around another 10 to 15 years at UCONN he will probably win another couple of titles. It's UCONN so not UK level expectations.

Point taken. I was in too much of a hurry, but I still recall how blacks from opposing teams were treated at Memorial Coliseum and the time Tom Payne saw the 'N' word written on the green board in the UK locker room at halftime of our game at UT in 1971.

Imagine someone in 1971 ranting and talking about an injustice that occurred in 1918.

Yea we all wanted him when Cal departed, but I am so glad he didn't come.
He looks like a whiny ***** on the bench and watch and see if he doesn't start getting the Cal whistle soon.
May have gotten it in this game today.
I did not want him. I wanted coach Pope even before Cal was fired . I watched BYU play and told my wife . He will never get it but damn I was he could b our next coach . His team runs a fun offense. He 16th in the country and his kids have to sign a statement that says no caffeine and no sex. He would kill it at UK.

I just hope stuff like this takes Hurley down a notch or two. He’s flying high coming off back to back titles, but most of those guys are gone and in this sport you have to deliver year after year. I’d love to see him have some unexpected roster attrition.

Wow, just saw a clip of his presser. Not only did he drag the officials on the Over-the-back call, but he even took a shot at the Memphis player saying it was a half-assed effort by the player on the rebound.

What a dick, no need to drag the opposing player into this, who in my mind made a perfrctly good attempt at the rebound. He's gonna catch a lot of flak from this. It won't be in the sense of anything specific coming from this, but it will be like the marker-throwing incident from a sneering Coach K.. it adds to a long list of character issues and people will remember this.

So are the referees told they have to take these coaches' abuse or something?

Because there's no MF'ing way. The first time one of these coaches was an ******* to me as a ref the way Hurley is to these refs, he'd be watching the rest of the game from the locker room.

I'd toss a MFer quickly.

After that loss is the first time I paid attention to him speaking, what a doucebag. I'm now thinking we dodged a very big bullet. Of course doesn't matter because it seems we got the perfect fit anyway.

Will be interesting to see how this honeymoon might wear off if his team starts to struggle. The cursing will be louder, tempers flare, refs get tired of his antics, media starts to call him out, recruits/transfers look elsewhere, and who knows if he ever actually crosses a line, a la Bobby Knight.

There's a world where this sort of unravels rather quickly.

Currently watching an assistant hold him back like a child in the colorado game. Looks like he might be cussing the assistant as well. Also looks like they're about to go down to colorado. 5 seconds left and Uconn is down 1 they have the ball

I absolutely HATE to see a referee playing to the crowd. There used to be one that called games in our HS region that was such a damn showboat. He would skip and wind up half way down the court to make a call that would get the home teams crowd excited. It’s like he thought they were reacting to him . Maybe they were .

I hope UConn implodes this season. The media hyped them because of their two titles, but this team clearly isn't as talented as the last few seasons, and it's been clear since the summer.

Welcome back to Earth, Coach Hurley! The nation is hoping you fall to pieces this season and end up leaving for the NBA. :p

His reactions are just like Cal's. Taking it very personally as if to say how dare you, don't you know who I am!? That massive ego taking over and distorting everything out of proportion. We could have had our second psychopath in a row.

Things could get rough for UConn before the New Year:

Tonight: Dayton
December 4th: #17 Baylor
December 8th: @Texas
December 14th: #3 Gonzaga
December 18th: #22 Xavier

Hurley should be thankful he's not coaching in the Big 12 or SEC this year.
If they don’t win some of those non-con games it could get difficult for them
