Eddie Murphy, at the time referring to a divorce Johnny Carson had recently gone through, had some great insight on this. The amount was much higher, like $300 million.

Could you have a buyout like that be deferred. So say your contract says you get 20 million if your fired. Your contract says 15 million is deferred until you get a divorce. So if you still love your wife you could get a divorce and collect it then remarry. If you don't love her. You get the divorce and it is not community property since you didn't get it while married.

Community property states. Most of the west and southwest this is the law. Income and debt acquired are considered property of both parties equally regardless of which accrued it.

She had a substance problem after some kind of surgery. Go watch her every time she jumped on his shoulder after a big win in that NC year. She had crazy eyes in every post game interview.

Don’t think it would be different in Mississippi. I think the default rule is any increase in wealth during the marriage is marital property unless there’s a prenup or unless it involves a gift that was never commingled.

Maybe we need an attorney to weigh in but I think the difference is in community property states the property belongs to each party. It may not end differently in Mississippi, but I do know the rule here is equitable distribution of the marital property rather than community property. In other words she may not be entitled to half his payment.
