I don’t know enough about coaches outside of the FVC but why not ESL’s head coach? If folks are gonna suggest Lynch for a team that would probably roll regardless of him, then ESL’s guy should get recognized as leading the team that appears to be a lock for the 6A title. But then again as someone else suggested, maybe it’s too early.

MC was semi finalist before Lynch got there and he just picked up where they left off.

A coach is like the director of a movie. It is far easier for him to demolish the material he inherited than it is for him to enhance it. Hundreds of screenwriters have complained about what an egotistical director did to their scripts. It's one thing to acquire talent--scripts, acting, editing, etc.--and quite another to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Team, brother, team. Carmel is a team.

No, it's Elmore Leonard.

No, that's not true. I'm really Cormac McCarthy.

But Naz clocked a team in the 1st half against a team Mtc went down the the wire with?
MC could go 14-0 and people will still bring up that damn De La Salle game...we were up 28-7 without 4 of our top All Conference starters, backups made a couple mistakes at the end to make it close but they still won and that’s all that matters. One thing you everyone should know to never do in high school football is base one game off another. 2 years ago De La Salle beat MC and a month later MC beat the “unbeatable” East St Louis.

I don’t know if MC goes undefeated in the regular season if we were running the veer still with the schedule we played. This is a completely different MC team. The playbook is so wide open. Yes Lynch got the keys to a nice car but he gutted it and rebuilt it into a luxury car.[/QUOTE
Also, I might add that he’s a lofty 4-1 against arguably three future Hall of Fame Coaches. Sunkett, Holencek and Inserra)

Maybe this debate should wait a few weeks until after the Semifinals.
From a traditional sense, there are still some dark horse teams that could emerge as true standouts.

Dennis Piron - Batavia

If you told me at the beginning of this season that Batavia will play Naz in the quarters I would've shrugged it off..

I know, they have an all world type player and a couple other seasoned veterans but other than that, the team was quite young and inexperienced upfront.. So hat's off too Piron/Holm..

Really? They were the pre-season #5 team in Edgy's poll. Based on that, i would think, at minimum, a quarterfinal appearance should be expected of this team.

They were way overhyped imo.. Did you watch the ESL game.. I think they got a lot recognition just because of the past success of the program itself..

BELSKIS - hands down . The man can flat out coach . Turned ACC around, he left- now they are bad again .

My vote goes to Kuska of St Rita
Mike Noll needs one more win to get some votes I would say.
His 4A Richmond rockets are 11-0 and no team has been closer than 20 points in 11 games this fall.
That said, he has to prove his Rockets are not just the biggest fish in the small pond that is the Kishwaukee Valley Conference.
He can do that Saturday by besting three-time defending state champion Immaculate Conception.

Derek Hart. Who? Derek Hart, 1st year coach of the Kankakee Kays.

The Kays made the playoffs only once between 2010 and 2018, a first round out under Kankakee native and alum Omar Grant in 2016. 2008, under Cornell Middlebrook, the Kays went to the semis - but that is the only season the Kays won a playoff game since 2000.

Grant was not renewed after last season, in a very unpopular decision by the Kays administration. AD Wilcox brought in Hart. The program could have gone into complete disarray.

Hart brought the Kays to their first 8 win regular season since 1999. Only a one point loss to 6A Crete-Monee kept them from a perfect regular season. Scored 400 points, gave up only 111 - which included a forfeit win over Rich South. Won a playoff game for only the second time since 2000, the first time since 2008. If this doesn't qualify for Coach of the Year, I don't know what should - no matter what the quality of the Southland.

I get nervous reading posts with phrases “toughest schedule in state” and “second toughest schedule in state.”
It’s possible that the toughest schedule in the state was played by Marist.
Team played Nine regular season games and 8 of the 9 opponents made the playoffs. No other team I could find played 8 playoff teams in a nine-game season.
In addition the 9 opponents of Marist won a total of 56 games. Granted team was just 5-4 but it’s now 7-4. I don’t like team’s chances against Loyola on Saturday but I just don’t know the criteria for toughest schedule I’m state. Is it most wins by opponents (Marist has 56, more than anybody else?) is it most games vs. playoff teams (Marist has 8 and nobody can match that) or does a team”s record factor into toughest schedule (Marist 5-4, my. Carmel 9-0)
The confusion I have is toughest schedule could include best won/loss record. Or does record not matter? I don’t know what criteria is being used with such definitive terminology.

Nick Kukuc from East Aurora. 4-5 record with a chance to win week 9 and make the playoffs.

All the coaches that have been talked about are fantastic coaches, but none of them have to deal with the issues that go on at East. The worst day for most of these programs is the best day at East.

Look at the big picture before you crap on this thought. I am carious how many other coaches that have been mentioned would have done better considering everything that comes into play with coaching at East.

My vote is for McNulty as well, but my caveat is that we don't hear from the Marketing Director from Six Flags.
Here is a warren fun coach question for yuh:
If warren wins state in 8A, mcnulty will be the Nth (how many) coach to win state titles in two completely different sports. He also won as a softball coach.
Obviously coaches have won in cross country/track and boys tennis/girls tennis and boys gymnastics/girls gymnastics boy soccer/girls soccer but combinations like softball/football, football/baseball etc. hVe to be pretty rAre.

This will be our @NBCSC Live Wednesday segment so make sure to tune in Wednesday at 12PM.

So who is your Coach of the Year and as important why?

I'm going with kuska at Rita.
Remember last year, and that record? Reeter supporters knew the reality...lots of those loses were close games to good teams.

That said, when kids lose it can be tough to remotivate. But he did. Addington the difficulty, the star player is a sophomore.

I'm sure that multiple National Baseball College Titles & multiple State HS Football titles applies to the question asked. But you got me thinking, did Gordie ever coach HS Baseball? My guess is no.

Assistant coach, OL coach Dave Douglas of JCA. I know he won't be considered but what he's done with this young JCA offensive line is impressive.

JCA's young OL is peaking at the perfect time and coincides with when the young team started peaking. Coincidence?

looked it up and while Joliet Catholic is a traditional baseball power, Gordon Gillespie was not listed as ever being a head coAch there. Looking at his amazing football coaching record got me thinking about one of the coaches who came after him ...Stone won a state title at Joliet Catholic and finished second a couple of times.
Years later he went bust coaching football at Mundelein High School, winning just 4 total games in 4 seasons.
Obviously Mr. Stone didn’t suddenly forget how to coach. So while coaching obviously matters there are many other factors involved. I suspect there are great coaches out there we don’t realize are great because we don’t see them playing in mid-November. but every year they are turning one-win talent into a four win season but we aren’t aware of it.

That is a good question. Cant think of any off the top of my head. I cant think of many coaches that are head coaches in two different sports. Especially at schools in the larger classes.

Has Buh won at Montini as FB head coach yet ? I think that would make it his 3rd sport.

My vote is for Todd Kuska. Has taken a 3-6 team from last with a 1-3 start this year to the third round of the playoffs. Losing his D1 receiver and making a QB change in week 7 he has taken this very young team on a seven game winning streak.

Has to be Jordan Lynch. 1 year after taking over the program from one of the most legendary coaches in IL history, who instead of leaving quietly did everything in his power to air the school’s and program’s dirty laundry....he goes undefeated while having a ruthless schedule and recruited 75+ freshman into the program.

The guy is an animal and he’s only 29 years old!
And he is everywhere right now showing his face to grammar school kids right now. Amazing energy and work ethic where selling the school to parents and kids alike.

I think they’ve been evenly matched on several occasions this year playing in the Blue, but what I’ve been impressed with most is his play selection, situational decision making. He’s managed his bullpen well, resting players when feasible to do so. He’s primed them for a Title run. He’s a chess master; this season (Lynch) has out coached some of the best. Well deserving of the acknowledgment...
Like most coaches, he’s the face of the program and he’s managing the program very well. But, you have to admit he has one hell of a staff around him. Not a knock in the least, and I do think he’s deserving. The future is very bright because of him.

The Coach from Warren is the guy that is most deserving. He is quietly putting on a defensive show with a non traditional power.

To be fair, most HS coaches actually have classroom responsibilities to some extent. Lynch is an "Admissions Associate."

He’s done a great job. They’re even better than last year. But they have a lot back. If they win state, certainly in the mix.
