Went out campaigning for support among students this week and delivered a big win. R. Johnson is obviously important to this team. We played so much better with him there.

Thats why we dont have a bunch of walk-ons from the Rec Center- You see the difference in having a scholarship player on the floor vs walk-ons...Baxter Price didnt play and Cunningham's minutes were limited....made a huge difference

The type of walk-on I expect is more towards the DeRunnya level than the Baxter Price level. We'll see if Ray can add them next year. No more Stansbury Iupe's please. Kentucky STARTED a walk-on last week.

dude, Cunningham would dominate in the Rec...and I doubt we have many HS all-star players in the Rec

Did I say Cunningham's name? No. You must of missed where I said Cunningham should be getting more of Sword's minutes.

I've personally been dominated by Cunningham in the Rec, along with everyone else he played against there. 61, the type of players you want to walk on simply aren't available to us on a consistent basis. Kentucky can start a walk-on because they have mid-major caliber players willing to go without a scholarship to play for them lined up out the door; we don't. We'll get a decent one every once in a while, but it's not any kind of negative indication if we don't have quality walk-ons any given year. Once we have a full roster of scholarship players available again, you won't be worried about walk-ons.

Last I checked division 3 guys pay their own tuition. No reason whatsoever they can't be on our bench over some crap D3 school that most likely costs way more than State.

Show me a D3 player that could do anything more for us than Price or Cunningham.

Holy **** do you even read the thread? I have never once put Cunningham in this group. Google Division 3 basketball teams and pick any roster and you'll have atleast 10 guys better than Baxter Price.

Cunningham should be in this group because in a normal year for any major conference program, he wouldn't see the court, as wouldn't the vast majority of D3 players. Next year when we have 13 scholarship players, this isn't even going to be an issue. That's my final word on it.

Walk ons almost never get to play. This season is an anomaly.

People of the quality you're talking about have no desire to walk on at MSU and put in tons of offseason work, practice time, travel with the team, etc. just to play 5 minutes a season. Those guys love basketball and want playing time... even if it is at a lower level. It takes someone special to be a walkon. We've had some decent ones (including Cunningham). But we're not going to consistently find 3 like that every year.

I sent the coaches info on a player I know who is eager to be a walk-on for State. He's averaging 24 and 11 and is already the school's all-time leading scorer and he's just a jr. He's 6'5 215. They have yet to send him some information on their camp or anything about MSU. He's been waiting for it to arrive. He is a much much better player than Bloodman or Cunningham.

Oh maybe that whole playing thing. Players go to D3 to play. They don't go there just to be a part of a team. No D3 player would want to go from playing D3 to being a walk-on that doesn't sniff the court except blowouts in the SEC.

You're underestimating how competitive players are. Give a guy a shot who has a dream and believes in his talent and he will gladly take an SEC walk-on with the hopes he can eventually prove his way onto the court.

Maybe out of high school.. But not after they are already playing in college. Like others have said, walk-ons hardly ever play.

Those guys are few and far between. Most players like that:

A) Would rather continue to PLAY basketball (like skb said), so they go to a D-3 type school. Many times those schools help out with academic scholarships.
B) Are tired of working their tails off throughout high school and are ready to get to college and not be tied down to an every-day training regimen. A.k.a. they leave their "high school hero" status behind and move on with life after sports.
C) Desire to play at the D-1 level but have no discipline to truly do so. On top of a variety of other factors, this lack of discipline plays out in the student's GPA. We know that if we are going to have walk-ons, they need to be GPA-boosters for most of our scholly guys.

That is not an exhaustive list, but that really narrows down the playing field. When you're spending hours upon hours on a daily basis being the scout team dummy without the incentives of a full scholarship, few college kids have the ability, desire, and discipline all in one. It's just how it is.

They aren't easy to find and that's because they aren't supposed to be. Like I said I believe I've already got one for him that I think you'll all be pleasantly surprised with. He's in private school too so their should be no issues with his grades. He just wants some info on the camp so he can attend and maybe get a chance to be a walk-on.
