that game was completely over managed , and thats what happens when you try and out think yourself. I knew when we didn't score in the second with runners at the corners withnoone out and Cohen tries to suicide squeeze Wes 17in Rhea that we would be lucky to pull it out. That play wasnt even close. Then if he didnt learn from his mistake the first time,Cohendoes it again a couple of innings later with runners at first and second with no outs and WesRhea gets thrown out easily at third. We were hitting their starting pitcing and we should have let these guys swing away.

I dont agree with the philosophy- I hate giving away outs. BUT- Cohen has been extremely consistent in implementing his philosophy. Some days it has worked really well- other? Not so much. You cant say for certain we score or blow the game open had we not bunted- you can only speculate.

I hope we make some philosophy changes this offseason

..I am not disagreeing with you. In fact, I agree with you.

But when in the first game of the regional one of the best pitchers in the country gets rocked by (the state of) Alabama's version of Belhaven, you've suddenly got serious problems moving forward.

Stratton should have mowed down the Samford batters for 8 innings. Then allowed MSU to move to the 9th with the score tied 0-0.

After Stratton was unsuccessful in his performance, winning the regional was basically a lost cause for MSU.

lineup is very capable of back to back strikeouts, even with our three and four hitters. Hell, the only player in the lineup that I trust not to strikeout is Frazier and C.T., who is not in the lineup right now. The thing that is telling is that we don't have a 3 spot hitter. C.T. and Frazier are true 1 and 2 spot hitters and after that, we have a team full of 9 spot hitters. How we won as many as we did, even with our pitching is beyond me. When your 6'5" 295lb. first baseman is hitting .250 and probably .150 since the world discovered he can't hit a curve, you are going to have problems. Cohen has to make up for the deficiencies somehow and that is by over managing. Give him just an average hitting team with a real three or four spot hitter and I would be surprised if he squeezes early in the game in that situation.

if we were to move tomorepower hitters in our lineup and less speedy guysi think he really needs to step back and look at how he manages the game. There are times to sacrifice, especially late in a game when you need to manufacturer a run. We werehitting their starting pitcher earlyin the game andthere was noneed for all of the bunting. If we could have found a way to get out of our own way it would have helped today in producing some more runs .

he would have squeezed the tying run home with Henderson at the plate most other times. Of course, he was hoping for a deep grounder, passed ball, error, long fly..... a hit. Lots of choices in baseball.....We must get to the point where we have more consistent hitting so that we do not have to feel a need to manufacture runs.

with what he had to work with this year, he felt that he had to try to score 1 run at a time. I don't agree with it, but I do understand it. And while Cohen deserves tons of praise for what he's done with our pitching staff, the lack of talent on the rest of the team is completely on him. He's GOT to recruit some better hitters or we're never going to be a good program.

But Coach, that was the most lucid, objective, well thought out post you've ever made.

Or at least one of those "Swing Away" contraptions they were advertising all week during the SEC tourney?

Five weeks ago I was really down on the Cohen. Then if you had told me we would have won the SEC tourney and got a 2nd seed in the NCAA regionI would have been excited. I would not have believed you. I am glad things turned around and we owe it to him. He did a hell of a job turning things around and I can live with the way things turned out this past weekend andI am excited about next season.

Mind you. I am really proud of our team , and love the way we competed the second half of the season. I couldnt be more excited about next season. I did think that Cohen managed too tightly yesterday and it cost us a win between the excessive bunting early and the pitching rotations late. Do I think we could have beaten Fla St twice? Probably not

They are the best two hitting coaches I know. Their approaches are different but they both get the job done.

Joe is in Memphis coaching the East Coast Grays. He previously coached at MCC. He coached Tyler Moore at MCC and worked with him this off season. Caruso's hitting philosophy was developed by Kevin Long (hitting coach of the NYY) when Caruso was in the Kansas City organization.

Millsaps teams consistantly through the yearshave always hit the ball. Coach Page is a great hitting coach. I am surprised that Millsaps has been able to keep him.
