He's a guard, and we need tackles. It's pretty much as simple as that.
Like I said, I don't really care you get this kid ,and those as good he is at his position, from this state and find a way to get him on the field...can NEVER have too many quality linemen on a team as bereft of talent at the line position at a program like UK is...who is to say he couldn't play defense he sure looks man enough...that is the coaches jobs to do this...certainly looks too talented to let get away

He is listed as a 3 star on rivals.
His best offer to date is either Virginia or Gergia Tech, most of his other offers are from smaller schools. Wonder what his true height is? Is he 6'4 or really 6'2?

Correct me of I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that someone wrote that Bentley actually lives in WV, but goes to hs in Kentucky. So, technically he's an out of state recruit.

I mean, the thing is, UK really ISN'T bereft of talented linemen anymore. We're bereft of talented EXPERIENCED linemen.

Our struggles in the future, talent-wise, look to be on defensive line, linebacker, and offensive tackle. We've got plenty of wideouts, defensive backs, running backs, and guards/centers.

I totally agree that if we have a spot for him that doesn't need to be taken by DT/DE/LB/OT, we should offer him. But if we don't...well, you gotta recruit to your needs. Especially when you don't intend to sign a 25 or 28 man class.

Why can be not play defense and how does anyone know he can't?

J R has said that while he may be interested in KY he does not bleed blue like Dotson or Horton.

If we don't offer this kid, I'm going to start questioning Stoops' judgement. UK really does some stupid things

Who has a list of his 22 offers please?

The list per his rivals profile shows 19 (UVA is included, so not sure about the other 3).

https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/maple/176651

Above poster was right in saying GT/UVA are only schools from P5 conferences. Next best offer is probably Cincinnati. I'm not saying the kid isn't worth a scholarship, but most P5 coaches apparently think he's a kid from whom they need to see more.

Maybe the UK coaches want to see him in camp again this summer, and will consider offering then. Maybe they seem him as talented but not in a position they MUST fill, like OT/DT.

There is a lot of time until Feb 2017 to see how it plays out.

Let's start with this question: is anyone recruiting him to play defense?
Let's start with this question: is anyone recruiting him to play defense?
I think it was Jeff Sendegar that was signed at UK as a QB and became one the best linebackers to ever play here...lots of guys learn to play different positions once they get to college...also happens on the pro level...by the looks of his offer sheet four schools jump out Virginia, Navy, Army and GT...have got to be pretty sharp to get in those places so my guess is he would be a quick learner and be able to take on whatever challenge he was asked...sounds like a great student with a lot of ability

17 rides for 22 positions not counting kickers. I would say a gray shirt might be possible in a few months depending on next year's prospects. But we can't keep 15 interior linemen on scholly (made up # on my part).

Drake is one of the best prospect this state has produced. He showed up early.... and he still might rs. We are as loaded with interior linemen as UK has ever been at any position in my lifetime.

Cole just graduates in a bad year for us and him.

Not "lots." Some. And only a few go from OL to DL. Much more go from DL to OL.

You're right that tackle is the biggest priority and we have to save a spot for Wills but OTOH by the time he's a RS Freshmen all of our current guards on the two deep will have already graduated or would be seniors if they are still here.

Yeah, I pointed this out a couple of weeks ago, makes it hard to figure unless they think either they're in on guys who are better or he's just not what they're looking for.

I don't know what the reasons are, but I cannot believe we let this guy leave the state if he wants to be a part of BBN!!...
I will explain the reasons. Knowing the math makes this easier to understand. Stoops has made no secret of the fact that his 2017 recruiting class will be small. The NCAA allows a football team to have 85 scholarship players at a time. Every year, seniors graduate and their scholarships are given to freshmen. In 2016, Stoops will have 8 seniors among the 81 scholarship players on his team. That means he can give away 8+4=12 scholarships in his 2017 recruiting class, plus more scholarships if undergraduates leave the program between now and then. At this point, there are 12 verbal commitments to Stoops' 2017 class. That means our 2017 class is already full by the numbers, because that's how much space is available on our 2017 roster. Stoops is still recruiting offensive tackles, receivers, defensive linemen, linebackers, and safeties in case some current players leave the program before February. Stoops is not recruiting offensive guards this year because that position is 1 of the deepest on the team and all of our guards are underclassmen. In a normal year, Cole Bentley would get a Kentucky scholarship. But not this year, because other positions are bigger needs and available scholarships are very few.

From what has been written Cole Bentley may not even really care if he gets an offer from UK. he is a native of West Virginia and is not really a UK fan. It seems that all this talk is by UK fans and may not really mean much.

According to Slugger, Bentley can play all of the positions. ;)

Didn't know I said that? As a matter of fact I DID NOT say that...just said it has happened before and that there are plenty of guys who change positions at the college and pro levels and that is true...we have had several here at UK that have done that...am I not right?

Name the UK players that successfully moved from OLine to DLine?

Tough of the top of my head, but Jason Leger comes to mind and there was a kid from Etown that they made into an olineman...Forrest was a WR when he came here...Ramsey played QB here and won two super bowl rings playing TE...pretty sure Jeff Van Note did it as well..sure there are several others, but those come to the front for me...my whole premise is that you can never have to many big uglies on the team especially if they are talented and just look at the number that left in the last year alone.

When looking at the current roster, there is no more depth for 2016/2017 on the interior OL than elsewhere. However, there will be considerably more FR/SO bodies at DB/LB than OL/DL. That's my cutoff b/c Bentley (or any other 2017 OL/DL recruit) would probably be played prematurely prior to 2018.

Let's look at the current project depth chart for 2018

OLINE
OT - Landon Young (tr JR or RS SO)
OG - Stenberg (JR)
C - Stallings (SR)
OG - GAA (SR)
OT - Wolfe (JR)

Backups - OG Fortner (SO), OG/C Drake Jackson (SO), OT - Dotson (RS FR), OT/OG Wills (hopefully - RS FR or SO)

DLINE
DE/DT - Kengera Daniel (SR), Taylor (JR), TJ Carter (SO)
NT - Dubose (SR), Cross (SO), Bohanna (FR)
DT - Middleton (SR), Looney (SO), Hudson (FR)

I still wonder if Calvin Taylor sticks at DL or moves to OT (maybe lacks lateral quickness for OT?) If he has developed in JUCO and can graduate in December, I'd love to see Provitt added for NT for the 2017 class, then he'd add another SR at NT.

Honestly, LB/DB looks stacked w/good depth. So, if anything, I'd take only one at each of those and add to all OL/DL positions. Plus, it's typically easier to throw FR/SO in at LB/DB than along the lines.

LB
OLB/Jack - Ware (SR), Bonner (SR), Bannerman (SO), King (FR)
MLB - Kash Daniel (JR), Firios (SR), Walder (SO)
WLB - Jordan Jones (SR), Eli Brown (JR), Watson (SO), Jamin Davis (FR)
SLB - Allen (SR), Walker (SR)

DB
CB - Westry (SR), Tucker (SR), Robinson (SO)
S - West (SR), Marcus Walker (JR)
S - Edwards (SR), Gilliam (SO)
CB - Baity (SR), Beckham (JR), Griffin (SO)

CB/S - Ajian (FR)

Considering how much longer it takes to develop OL/DL, I would definitely focus efforts there for 2017. I think you could probably take zero LB/DB in 2017 and add any OL or DL position. To clarify, I'm not pushing for Bentley specifically but only the argument that EVEN WITH a small class, there is no OL or DL position that has so much depth as to not need a recruit in 2017
