I honestly bought into the hype of the BYU offense coach coming to UK, thinking we'd suddenly turn into the Pitino Cats with movement everywhere. Instead, last year turned into Amari becoming a point-center and the same damn play running all the time. Pope's analyzing all this, figuring it out, but seemingly not using his staff. Teach the guys how to run a damn offense, and THEN analyze who fits where.
If you were surprised about Amari being point center, i have no idea what you were expecting. We ran the same offense last year that BYU ran in 2024.

Pope did run different offense before the early 20s, I’ll give you that. When Pope was hired, I fully expected 5-out zoom action with a big triggering it, which is what we got
You and I might disagree a little. But I think we agree on far more.

I do appreciate the time you take to explain your position and the detail.

It’s quite obvious that you know what you’re talking about. 👍🏀

I’ll keep on harping it, but Pope’s ability, or pack thereof, to land elite talent is going to put him in the dog house with boosters who are going to be wondering why their ridiculous amounts of cash isn’t amounting to anything but middle-of-the-road recruits and transfers.
Exactly right. No ”system” can possibly overcome this. And I’m beginning to believe Pope has clear recruiting deficiencies.

Duke is Duke. i think we just gotta concede they have more money, influence and draw than us and it’s probably not going to change.
Duke is just different than most, if not all, other colleges. I was at Duke about 4 years ago for something one of my kids was doing. While we were there, I played a round of golf at UNC's golf course, and another day, I hit some balls on Duke's driving range. UNC's course was a typical college course: it was fine, nothing fancy, and in pretty good but not great shape.

From the driving range at Duke, I could see part of their course. It looked like Augusta National. I mean, it was such an impressive looking golf course. I remember going back to our hotel later that day and looking up endowments. Just did that again, and Duke's is over $12 billion. For comparison, UK's is $2.5 billion.

They just have so much money, it's almost unfair. I'm really glad they haven't won a championship recently despite all of that money, but that money is always going to buy a lot more than what the rest of us can buy.

Not sure why you bring this up on this thread but for someone who says they love Pope you're bitching as much as you do with Cal last year

Well, of course. It bothered me too. That doesn’t mean I’m going to say the reason why we lost is this particular thing without justification. We lost scoring 88 points. If I told you that and you didn’t have emotional attachment to the game, you would be able to easily say the issue was what? You shouldn’t lose ANY games scoring 88 points. Fix the defense, not say 88 points wasnt enough, so let’s add pieces to score 89. It isn’t rational, bro, I’m sorry. It’s just emotional. The issue is the defense and that’s on the coaching staff to fix
The defense was bad. True. But UL just allowed Ohio to score 81.

There are some former portal players doing well for Uconn, illinois, Louisville, iowa state. Think either the top or 2nd leading scorer for all of those teams is either a first or second year portal player. There’s tons of portal players lighting it up.

I’d still like to get Collins and/or Stokes.

How do you think I want a roster built? Can you answer that question?

It still doesn't seem like you're grasping my argument at all.

Again, and for the third time - I want one, maybe two, OAD stud freshmen surrounded by six or seven solid veterans.

It looks like you just enjoy arguing.
Dude is merely trying to deflect from wanting to explain why Pope isn’t recruiting like his peers, so we have what we have here, because he can’t explain it, or better yet, doesn’t want to.

Purdue has a phenomenal golf course. A Pete Dye course. About 7500 yards, it’s very long and hard. Not much rough but it has Sand and waste bunkers all over it. Lots of water too. Typical Dye design with not severe greens but lots of small tiny breaks that are hard to see x beautiful course and one of my favorites to play.

The thing that should be questioned is Pope's ability to develop good players into the elite player/s we need to get the job done. Hurley takes good players and turns them into great players. Golden took Clayton who we all overlooked , then said hey he's a pretty good junior at UF, to then damn he's elite as a senior. Broom at Auburn was pretty good as a junior then elite as a sr at Auburn.

Look at Mo D... he's pretty darn good but say this off season if we had someone to make his jump shot to something good and consistent then he'd be elite. If someone gets Chandler to drive to the basket and finish at the rim then he could be elite. Jasper Johnson or Moreno take the next step and they can be elite.

Can Pope develop them into that is a question we should have.

(When I say elite I mean for college ball, not top 6 draft pick NBA super star elite)

Imo there is a clear explanation. Pope has a system that prioritizes the system over the skillset. Its great for giving less talented guys an opportunity to put the ball in the hole, but doesn't lend itself to showcasing individual skills.

Because it doesn't lend itself to showcasing individual skills, those skills aren't needed and therefore arent developed by the staff.

Imo its also the reason we're not landing top talent and we're overpaying for the guys we do get. They're losing the ability to showcase themselves for the nba, so we have financially offset that through nil.

Its something Pope will have to navigate because he wont win a title with at least one elite player on the squad. The fanbase, including myself, was so done with Cal we were glad to accept Pope's approach. I still love him and his system, but changes are needed.

I sure hope we get a stud from 26 here soon all these other schools are getting them left and right. Hell Missouri already has 2 in the top 25 committed. Duke has 2 in the top 12. Uconn has 2 in the top 30. Kansas has 2 in top 35 and here we sit with 0 committed.
We will get them just because we are Kentucky. We don’t have to get with the modern times. Clearly.

My only concern with a guy like Collins is he could turn out to be the next Damion Collins .... and that has nothing to do with his name! I hope we truly move on from the "potential" era now with the portal and sign those freshmen who can truly come in and either dominate or contribute in a meaningful way.

I’d love to hear what we’re selling him in terms of role. Does no one else see the glut of guys at the 3/4 next year?
Noah, Mo, Kam, Jelavic, Hawthorne

We’re missing something as fans in terms of the situation. Getting Collins alone probably forces one of the above out. Getting Collins and Stokes probably overhauls both positions with departures.

His HS season starts tomorrow night. Just hard to see any fall signing period decision that doesn’t come with an announcement of the announcement today and a decision tomorrow. Cal used to have kids commit on the day of Champions Classic

Here is a completly out of the box thinking. Pope is such kumbaya type of person and I think this could be an issue in recruiting. Most of these top kids come from bad backgrounds and I think when Pope is visiting, the Mom wants to be assured that their kid gets a hard nosed coach to keep them in line. Pope is not this kind of person. He is in your face clapping positively and I think he needs to get more aggressive in the way he coaches and also the recruiting of players. His teams are usually soft and don't have the Im going to kick your *** not matter what. Some of my best coaches got in my face and told me how it is. Not doing Kumbaya BS. Todays kids need discipline not “he is so Beautiful” BS. I am probaly off base on this but his approach is the issue.

I really hope we are at a place where we take a top five super athletic freak that probably isn’t as big a project as people say and don’t worry about what a player like Hawthorne and Noah think. Like seriously. Ik Noah is a Kentucky boy and I love having him on the team but do you keep Noah and not get Collins?

The pitch Pope has to sell them on should be super easy. You are much better basketball player than the guys we have coming back. Unless you absolutely don’t put any effort or have a terrible attitude you will be starting next year at UK.

I just really hope Pope isn’t thinking like dang Noah and Hawthorne might get upset if we sign Stokes and Collins.

Very well could be possible. I want a coach Ik is in control. Now as UK fans we love Pope. We know his history and who he is.

to random families across the country he is just Mark Pope. They know what he shows them. They don’t have all this history attached to him that we do.

Also possible that everybody isn’t a Bible Belt person and don’t want such a nice coach. I bet when Pope leaves house visits they instantly have their mind made up that they aren’t going to Kentucky if they feel like Pope is soft.

it’s not crazy to think because as much as I Love what Pope stands for I think he is SOFT!

What do you base your belief that Pope is soft with your capital letters and! Is it because he is nice and considerate does that make a person soft? I mean he ate the whole starting five out last game because they all had a brain cramp on a free throw and Garrison was being lazy.
