one of those elitist lazy *** professors that resented Doc actually expecting competence and effort and are too good to acknowledge any authority.

But then you might just be clueless.

...I think of Donald Zacharias.

Zacharias didn't have students and faculty who openly opposed him. Foglesong did.

Zacharias knew how to deal with student and faculty groups. Foglesong didn't.

Foglesong had the potential, the exuberance, but he dropped out less than two years in at State-- a mighty poor retention rate. And Zacharias was MSU's president for over a decade.

When I think of a great president, I definitely don't think of Doc Foglesong because I know that Donald Zacharias would have done better.

I would actually consider those qualities the mark of a good leader....

Most successful people are going to have their detractors.

You both are idiots...

Did Scott Ross send the MSU landscape crew and equipment to Meredith's house? Scott loves MSU and is working to get the best person for MSU. Would you rather have someone that is willing to play the get along game with Meredith or someone that is not afraid to call ********? If Watson had the MSU crew do the work for his boss Meredith then he deserves to be removed from consideration for the job based on the appearance of impropriety. Similarly Meredith should be relieved of his post for using University employees / equipment for his personal use presumably without paying for it. The lone fact that most of the faculty want Watson also ought to tell you he is the wrong man for the job.

...it's the rare successful person, like Zacharias, who is beloved. And that makes Zacharias great, while Foglesong is maybe only adequate-to-good because while he acted as an agent for change, his unexpected departure has meant more infighting within the MSU community and likely a weakened MSU presidency. And a weakened MSU presidency is a bad thing for MSU.

Does anyone see the irony in this scandal involving flowers again?? I mean, some guys drove in a truck and planted some flowers in someone's yard. Does MSU have some kind of flower fetish?? Were they daffodils??!?

Ross is a complete douche and should try to spend more time focusing on not getting anymore DUI's. Foglesong did SOME good things. But when you are president of a research university it behooves you to keep the profs happy. Everyone who thinks that MSU profs are lazy are idiots (in most cases). Publish or perish has made being a professor a very stressful job....especially considering that most of them could be easily clearing six figures if they were in industry.

That's all I need to know. Looks like he's pushing Meredith too. Both garner a big round of applause from me.

The landscaping gratuities go further than Meredith and a well known Watson Legislative defender may have had some work done on his properties as well. Meredith needs to go and Vance needs to take his name out of consideration because if Pickering does any checking, he'll find a lot more. Foglesong probably saw a lot of the corruption and I doubt Meredith helped him at all since he was right in the middle of it.

If you think Watson is the guy, and the only hang up is that you want 10 years, you ask him for a 10 year committment. Obviously he can break that committment. But, you can defer compensation contingent upon him staying 10 years. If he doesn't want to make that committment and that's a big deal, then don't hire him.

I really don't have a dog in the MSU Presidential search fight. But, there are ways around the problem of Watson's age.

He could give us a 20-year commitment and it wouldn't change the fact that, at age 65, there's a very real question of whether he would be able to have a term of more than 4-5 years anyway.

people want stability and even if we structure it to where Watson's four year reign is free of charge, we have failed if he is only there 4 years.

There is a certain amount of privilege and a reasonable list of favors elected officials should enjoy, but getting your yard done by universities isn't one of them.

So are you an architecture student or a daffodil lover? And by "your side," do you mean those that are afraid of change and accountability?
