Why would use Sam Grant as a pass receiving tightend inside the five? We did it twice and one went for a TD. I don't think I've seen that play this year. I'm confused why would use it in a game like Kansas and not save it for some of the heavy weights coming up.

I'm not complaining, just wondering out loud...........

I think they were just letting some of our players get some love.

I don't think it was any secretive thing. He's another HS tight end in the process of converting to tackle and is the best blocking TE we have. In the jumbo set with his size its just another dimention to defend.

We are developing so many options offensively and giving the defense so much to defend that its actually masking some of our offensive line weaknesses.

No, no mystery there I suspect.
The staff was just dumping in the whole roster.
Probably, on a whim they did the TE thing and it worked.

The coaches were maybe as surprised as us fans were.

In a game like this, most likely just testing things out. What they'll notice is even on the completed pass that Grant was bumbling it around before he came down with it. It's also a good way to set things up down the road. When people study film, they'll be scared of a peeling TE/tackle and could do a lot of things like have a defender or two drop off the line of scrimmage trying to cut the route off or even have to hold an extra second which would allow for Perine or Mixon to blast through the 5 hole or allow for an easy bootleg to TD.

I think its setting things up further down the road and giving teams something to think about. Not to mention it gives a guy like Grant some stat line love, as others have mentioned.

Well, I wasn't going to go there...but you're right. It was awkward at best. It confuses me when we have a true tight end. I guess it's just me. BTW, I loved the Knight to Knight TD pass in mop up.........

I doubt we'd throw it to Grant in the big games, because his hands ain't too great. But since we threw it to him twice today, if he comes in to block on the goal line, they'll at least have to give him a little pass coverage consideration, and maybe it will make the run a little more effective.

My old high school HC used to do stuff like that all the time when we were playing somebody we were going to beat easily. Or if the "big boys" don't give him any more attention than KU did, then he'll have had his drop and will look it in next time.
