Just heard a rumor that the Cotton Mills project is dead and that it was announced from the university today. Anyone else hearing anything?

<div style="text-align: left;">Either way, I expect that land to be developed. The location is too good for it not to be, and Tabor has helped whoever owns it out by doing a great job with the piece they are continuing to develop.</div>

I worked pretty closely on another project with the developer of cotton mills a couple of years ago and he gung-ho on getting that project started. It was ALL about getting financing though. Hard time right now trying to get a project of that magnitude financed. I do hope he can see it through but at this point I just don't see it happening barring a very big change in the current economic situation.

Personally, I am not crazy about the master plan proposed. I know it is a huge improvement over what is there now and sometimes you have to settle but I think it really neglects Russell St., as well as, the hwy 12 intersection, which in my opinion is missing a HUGE opportunity. I wouldn't mind seeing Tabor Construction take over this project. They have done an excellent job restoring some blighted properties throughout Starkville. If it doesn't get done by Nicholas Properties, somebody will pick this land and project up soon.

Below are some conceptual images(for those who missed them) from the study Placemakers did for Starkville about a year ago. They address the connection between the hwy 12, Russell St. and the University. I believe the city has sought state funding for transforming highway 12 to make it more pedestrian friendly according to the proposal by Placemakers, but to this point has not been successful. Jeremiah?

I think a firm in Minnesota was going to obtain the financing and oversee the project, but that it fell through. Not sure what the plans are for financing now. Usually these are done by private groups from not around here...

I talked to two people. One said that they were at the Planning and Zoning meeting and overheard someone ask about the Cotton Mills project and the response from the committee member was "Oh, it's dead!"

Another person said that her son, who works in the Presidents office at MSU said that the project was dead.

I guess it's jut rumor for now until an official statement but it's not looking good. Sad! It would have been a game changer for economic development in Starkville!!!
