CPB to shut down

I listen to NPR a pretty good bit and will miss it, but I think its a fair argument that funding local television stations that can only broadcast on the airwaves or cable is probaby a pretty big waste of money. My rural Delta grandparents were both gone by 2011 and they were last people I know that still used rabbit ears. With that being said, this isn't about the funding or reducing the deficit.
I don't have rabbit ears, but I have an over-the-air antenna in my attic both for backup to Dish, and for accessing the sub channel broadcast channels. They're not on any cable or satellite system that I know of.

NPR isn't shutting down.
Nor is PBS, unless I'm totally out of touch. They have some good programs. Some of my favorites are "This Old House" and its spinoffs. Some of the science programs are really good too.

I've got 2 small antennas on my roof too. I use them to get all the local networks (ABC CBS NBC FOX) for sports and when the weather gets bad I'll flip them on. I think there's 5 PBS/MS Public Broadcast channels that I get also along with various others, 17 in all I think. I stream mostly but the locals have their place still at my house
I had to read that about three times to make sense of the fact that you get SEVENTEEN channels…

I haven't looked into the funding percentage that CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) represented for NPR, PBS and the various local affiliates, so I don't know what happens to all those organizations.

It's somewhat nostalgic to me, who grew up on Sesame Street and the Electric Company (Morgan Freeman anyone??).

That said, I watched some of PBS's convention and election coverage and it was beyond embarrassing how completely biased to the left they were. It was extremely clear that there wasn't a single person on any panel who had any intention of supporting Trump in any way. They did it to themselves and if I lose things I wish I didn't, I know where the blame lies.

The internet says 1% of their budget came from the federal government.

I agree, NPR is annoying. But PBS actually has a lot of good stuff. Some decent cartoons for the kids (Curious George is a favorite of ours). A few decent travel shows. Some cool Nova and nature specials (Pompeii series, Tongan volcano, building of the Eiffel Tower, rebuilding on Notre Dame, etc). And some good frontlines. And the British shows for the older crowd. And yeah, a lot of the shows have wealthy donors contributing, and that may increase now. My kids have memorized some of the donor names from watching the intro to the shows.
I grew up watching a lot of pbs educational shows. I watched a good special on animals and different plant species the other night on pbs station.

Wow, future generations are losing out on a lot of free early education and behavioral content that was known to be appropriate and beneficial. Guess parents can stream old content instead.
There's no way you typed that with a straight face. By education you mean indoctrination right?

How on the absolute 17 is Dinosaur Train indoctrination? Sid the Science Kid? Arthur?

I am not vouching for literally every single show/program that has ever aired.
My comments have been specific to shows made for kids 8 and under that teach socially acceptable behavior and the basics of science and wonder.

Wow future generations will have so much content to choose from ....CPB was antiquated and certainly not necessary in today's world of streaming ....if the content is that good, it will be picked up by private sources ...as there will always be a place for good content ....

Very true. The low cost and widespread availability of public programming currebtly can't be replicated with streaming, it yes some content I am referencing will surely live on.

Anybody had any luck with the indoor HD antennas?

The attic made a huge difference when I put the antenna there vs inside. Moving it outside helped some more too but wasn't as dramatic a change as moving it to the attic was. I use the old satellite mount and wiring for one of the outside antenna and a piece of gray PVC conduit for a mast and coax I ran for the other one

I watched Wild America every Thursday night when I was a kid.
Yeah I watch a lot of morning shows at my grand parents and then now as an adult I watch a variety of things there. We watch a lot of educational type stuff like pbs National Geographic Smithsonian discovery. I'm hoping pbs stays a live because I would like for my kids to keep some of those educational cartoons rather just stuff Disney nick or one of the others broadcast. I want them to learn and not just brain rot all the time if they are watching tv. Learn about plants animals geography etc.

I thought about it more and I think I do agree with the folks saying NPR and PBS have a "liberal" slant to them. A lot of the shows teach human empathy and a core christian value of "do unto others as you would have done unto you."

With the rise of the tea party takeover and the televangelicals guiding the "conservative" side in promoting corporate profits and deprioritizing caring for your neighbors - they don't at all mesh with the ideals those shows try to teach.

I'm not sure if this is propaganda or not, but I have read that CPB distributes money to states who then give it to local channels that use those fundds to pay PBS and/or NPR and that those funds funneled through the states don't show up in that 1%. Never been interested enough to try to confirm that.

Even if that was the case they can’t be relying on a substantial percentage of government funds. I don’t listen to NPR radio but I listen to a few of their podcasts. They advertise as much or more than others. Common sense says they are self sustaining if their model is the same as private news outlets.

I believe PBS is more reliant on public funds and that makes sense too. TV is expensive, so less margin. Probably means we’ll see more ads on PBS programming, which for me is Daniel Tiger aka cartoon Mr Rogers and This Old House

Are you wanting one that hides behind the TV or one that goes in the attic?
Hides behind TV. Not wanting to put anything on roof. When I moved into my current house the first thing I did was rip off a satellite dish because it was leaking so I’d rather not put anything up there. Attic would be alright I guess, I don’t mind drilling holes and running wires. I just don’t want more holes in the roof.

If you have the old cables that ran to the satellite you can use those to rig up a good antenna inside your attic.
