I had my first bad experience at Mudbugs 047 (off of Old Fannin, behind the farmer's market)

i know they are a sponsor of our forum, so I don't want to be a dick. But they brought out our order, minus the corn and potatoes, which the girl said would be brought out shortly.

We we never got our corn and potatoes. I would have been perfectly fine with just sitting there drinking on my pitcher of cold beer until they were able to bring everything out together, if I had known.

My plate of crawfish had about a half dozen "straight tails", which usually means they were dead before they hit the boiling water, so I didn't eat those. I also had several that were not as hot (temp-wise) as the others, that seemed like they were boiled long before the others.

I'm a regular at this place (3 or 4 times every season) and they are always spiced perfectly, so no problem there. I was refunded for the lack of taters and corn after the young lady got the manager, but the mgr was the only person there that wasn't a late-teenager.

I left wondering whether they have undergone new management. It was not a huge crowd of patrons, because nobody was sitting at the tables that are not covered, due to the threat of rain. They also had a corner of covered-seating area that was blocked off for a band, but no band was playing. They could have had another table under cover there, but luckily it never rained, just a slight mist/sprinkle.

how much a pound

They were around $10 a lb. My bill was $99, and I got 7 lbs (4lb for me and 3 lb for the wife) 6 sausage, 6 corn, 6 potatoes and 2 half lb of mushrooms. I got a pitcher of Bud Light and a Lime-a-Rita for the wife. The refund of corn and potatoes was $9.63.

I went there a few weeks ago and the guy was telling me they had been there 20+ years, so I assume it's the same management. That was my first time there and I was satisfied, but I did notice some cold crawfish mixed in like you said...which told me they were from the night before bc I got mine at like noon on a Saturday. Paid $6.50/lb, and they were pretty good.

My favorite crawfish in the metro area is T-Beauxs in Clinton. I'll usually drive past 50 other crawfish places to get theirs, bc they're always large crawfish, very few straight tails, delicious, and consistent every time. I was hoping mudbugs would be a closer to home option, so hopefully they get things straight...I was planning to hit them up tomorrow afternoon

Mudbugs has been the only place for crawfish that I sit down and eat. I live in Madison and make the trip across the spillway specifically to dine there. There is a small grab and go crawfish outlet in Gluckstadt called Bayou Bugs that I get to go. They also spice them perfectly, which is my main deal. I hate bland, but I also don't like them so hot they make snot shoot out of my nose.

$10 a lb?....... Those better be the best crawfish I’ve ever put in my mouth. You usually get 2 or 3 lbs. for that price.

Had Tbeaux's today...kinda on the small side. Still were very good, though. Last week, they were HUGE.

Wait, maybe I'm thinking of a different place. The place I'm talking about is on the ridgeland side on Old Canton by Crabs Seafood Shack/Walgreens/DQ. I thought that was where the OP was referring to. Sorry if I was mistaken...misread Old Fannin for Old Canton

If you were at Mudbugs 047 today, that would have been Zach Bridges playing there tonight. He played at Mudbugs 042 in Brandon last night I believe. He is really good. Surprised the crawfish were 1) so expensive, and 2) not up to standards.

Try the Crawfish Barn in Pearl. Kind of a hole in the wall. But the mild crawfish are hot and the hot crawfish are smoke coming out of your ears. And the Shrimp Poboys are New Orleans style on Gambinos soft Poboy bread.

Went to The Crawfish Barn tonight for the first time. It is definitely not a 5 star establishment. The shrimp Poboy was as good as I’ve had at a lot of Nawlins joints. $9.95. The fries were thick crinkle cut with Cajun seasoning. We decided to get a couple of pounds of crawfish but our waiter never came back after taking our order. I believe I saw a sign that said $6.50 a pound cooked and $4.00 live. Oysters were $7.95 for a 1/2 dozen and $14.95 a dozen. That’s more than Saltine and I wouldn’t trust uncooked oysters from anywhere in Pearl.

I was in Baton Rouge this past week and the best I saw was $6 per pound cooked. They said it was still a little early.

Go to Drago's for raw half shells. No more expensive and come from trusted source.

Bayou Bugs in Gluckstadt is a ripoff, no way to tell what you pay per pound because 1/3 is celery and onion, seriously.
Crawfish Hut is the takeout place on Old Canton by Crabs Seafood. Good place for takeout.
Sal and Phil's good for sit down but 6.99 a pound.
Ratliff Ferry is doing crawfish every Thursday night, starting this week at $4.80 boiled.

Well, we weren’t in Drago’s attire. Truth be told, we probably looked like we belonged in the Crawfish Barn tonight. We went to New Orleans to Fair Grounds Racetrack for the weenie dog races (took the kids). Are a late breakfast, snacks at the track, so no one was hungry enough for a real meal before we left the big easy. We stopped at Cafe Du Monde and that held us until we hit Byram.

The people watching is pretty good at the horse track. We didn’t even get out of the car and this cat walked past us with rolled up jorts, bright white tennis shoes, white mid calf socks, white shirt tucked into the jorts, cigarette hanging out of his mouth, horse newspaper and a program in his hands. Instead of fancy hats, Fair Grounds attire must be Slutty Saturday.

$4 lb cooked at Claiborne Hill in Bay St Louis. I know that doesn’t help you, but it’s crazy they are charging that much

I can’t speak to the boiled crawfish from there, but I always buy live sacks from Bayou Bugs and have never had any problems. They are always good size (for the time of year) with very few dead in the sack. I saw where his live price this weekend was $3.85/lb. was something like $3.25/lb a few weeks ago. I would guess this cold snap we’ve had has something to do with the higher prices (along with it still being pretty early in the season).

You are 1000% accurate regarding Bayou Bugs. The majority of what you get is soaked celery & onion....and the crawfish are usually falling apart and so water logged you can't get the meat out. I've given them 7 or 8 tries hoping I was just catching a bad batch, but got the same thing every time. Order 10 lbs and you'll get 4 lbs of crawfish and 6 lbs of wet celery.

Been to Mudbugs the past 2 Saturday’s and the crawfish are $6.99 a pound. Same owners and such and they are nigh state fans. I will say last night a did have about 10-12 bugs that were soft and color in my mix but overall flavor is spicy and good and didn’t think too much about it. Music is always good.

There is is always a line to wait in. It’s a small place and worth the wait.

Pretty sure they are $6.99/lb at mudbugs after starting the year at $7.49. Possible they are still $7.49. And the whole straight tail thing is a myth. Mushy meat, don't eat. Otherwise you're good. Being that Mudbugs washes theirs so well from what I can tell, the dead ones would be found then, and that's assuming they don't presort every single one of them on a table to be totally positive. Which they very well may.

The real complaint I have is the bathroom situation at 047. A one man, one commode unit, for a crawfish eating and beer drinking joint with 100 people inside just doesn't quite do it. Nearly found myself in a Ryan's Steakhouse Story situation there last weekend.

Also, the crawfish market here is really messed up right now by new demand in east Texas which is keeping the prices jacked up on live. Drank beer with a guy last night that gets them off the same truck that supplies all of the crawfish joints around here. That's what he was telling us anyway.

$10/lb is still high as hell. The Crawfish House in OS is going $5/lb or a 3 lb platter with sausage, corn and potatos for $18-20.
It's still kind of early in the season, and all the rain in South LA hasn't helped with the number or size of crawfish. We cooked our own yesterday, and they were $3.50/lb live. It's the best way to eat them if you have an afternoon to spare.

Also, there is nothing wrong with straight tails.

For those of you boiling at home, we have been using this to cook with:

Less salty and more citrus than zatarains.
