Curci on recruiting

Fran Curci told me that it takes 4 things that make a good SEC football player. Strength, size, good work ethic, and quickness. Guess which of those he said was the most important? Quickness
Why? Because it doesn't matter how big you are, how strong you are, or how hard you work if you can't get to the block you are suppose to make or the tackle that stops a run at the line of scrimmage you will lose the battle.

Now it seems to me that is basically UK problem, no quickness on either the OL and the DL, but that can be fixed with better recruits. UK has always had good offensive weapons but in the past the line falls apart as the season moves through the SEC schedule. We have had a few good lineman in the past but no depth.

This is football not basketball. It takes 25-30 quality players to get over the hump plus a lot of luck. Now we recruit 25-30 players a year but many just don't make it due to injury, grades, etc. The better teams red shirt their entire class especially most of the lineman. That alone puts UK behind the 8-ball since to even get close these young men end up playing as freshman. That is a real disadvantage.

I think having a good team that wins 5-6-7 games ever few years is much different than building a program that can get to the next level. Everyone is disappointed in this season but we as fans must stay the course because it's recruiting that gets you their. Now no question Coach Stoops has made some mistakes but I for one expect UK to have another good recruiting season and will judge the program after his fifth year. Then if the team is no better, blame it on the coach but to,do it now after only 2 true recruiting classes makes no sense.

Just my opinion.

Super nice guy. I met him a at a few cookouts as I used to date his niece for about 6 months. Very nice, everyday type guy.

Why didn't Curci get another college coaching job after Kentucky? He was 43 years old at the time.

Honestly, I think that several of the UK players could stand to lose a little weight. Doing so would help their quickness somewhat. Also, ditching any cardio (except warmups) & working solely on increasing explosiveness would help too.... Sprints, plyometrics, sleds, medicine balls, sand bags, heavy lifting (fast) with chains or bands, etc, etc.

I read on here all the time how the UK players look small when playing SEC schools but are listed as the same size.

He got into banking. IMHO, he should have stayed at UK.
He got fired as coach and I don't recall anyone offering him a position in the Athletics Department. Had it not been for the probation he probably would've succeeded at UK for a while.

Quickness just isn't tied to actual physical talent. It's also tied to other things......like coaching, technique, development, and the supporting cast.

-Coaching - If the coach doesn't teach you how to use that quickness? If the coach calls a play that negates that quickness? If the coach plays you in a position to negate the quickness?

-Development - A lineman must be able to diagnose the situation in a heartbeat and then act. If a DE holds the point of attack, does a gap peek, but then chooses the wrong gap, it doesn't matter how quick he is.

-Technique - There's an old saying. "Movement without purpose is wasted movement." This is also stated with the classic, "Smooth is slow. Slow is fast." You can take the quickest DE in the world......but if they are young and don't have technique......an experienced OL is going to make you look foolish.

-Supporting cast - Let's say you have a LT with great quickness and perhaps he has great technique.....if he has a very poor LG next to him and no TE help, he can be in a bad position.

I totally agree that quickness is a HUGE attribute to look for in a recruit. But I don't think it's the problem with what we are seeing. I think we are recruiting guys with quickness. I just don't think they are developed, mature, have the supporting cast, deep, experienced, etc.

If you watch NFL games and even the best college teams, just watch the LOS and see just how much quicker those players react at the LOS compared to KY players. Watching the Panthers Cowboys game, it was incredible how quick and aggressive the Panthers Dlineman and Lbers are at the point of attack. Watch the KY players and they are slow, do not have much technique, and lack a lot of aggression.
