We are about the 8th best hitting team. Stats back that up.

Here is a quote from the article Marcello had in the Clarion Ledger today. I have not checked Marshmellow but he is usually accurate on these things. Link to the article below.

"Their absence - and subsequent struggles at the plate as they battle back from their injuries - has led to struggles at the plate. The Bulldogs' SEC batting average is .245, the worst in the SEC. Vanderbilt is 11th at .246."

I think he's looking at overall stats and Marcello is using SEC stats. Either way, moot point because .avg is a useless stat to go by. I think we're something like 8th or 9th in OBP in SEC play.

OB% is .375.

In conference play we are batting .245 and have an OB% of .333.

We're 7th in that one. The only pitching stat that really matters is ERA. We're 8th in that one. This team isn't what we had hoped it would be but it doesn't suck. It's just mediocre.

The things people come up with...of course average is the most accurate stat. It takes out your speed, it takes out the other teams' errors. It's also ludicrous to use out of conference stats. Nearly a third of the SEC season done and we are the worst hitting team.

But better things are out there.

Batting average values everything equally...a single is valued equally to a homerun. That's a problem.

It's definitely not useless, but it's far from the most "accurate", if you're trying to gauge a player's offensive contributions.

But there's no hiding the fact that we've been below average at the plate this year. We'll see if the returning players help the overall lineup improve.

Currently, we are the worst hitting team in the SEC. That's not surprising considering

....we come into this season with a deep and experienced pitching staff and an inexperienced group of position players. We knew our staff would have to carry us, that our offense would be well behind our pitching and defense.

And we are 8th in freaking ERA. The only arms that have shown improvement are Stratton and Gravemen. Reed has been consistent with last year, while Pollorena, Routt, and Mitchell have fallen off. Girodo has been in the system for three years and is terrible.

That's the problem with this team. We knew we would struggle at the plate. Our only chance was to be outstanding on the mound. And we should be, but we're below average.

OBP and Slugging are the most useful stats, because walks are earned with plate discipline. You could make an argument that a modified OBP that excludes intentional walks to set up forces is even better, but that's a borderline moot point.<div>
</div><div>Batting average is useful as well, just not as much so, since getting a walk helps the offense.</div>

of hitting. You know, the physical act of putting the ball in play and reaching base without an out being recorded. When a pitcher actually throws strikes, we are last in the SEC at that.

Currently, we are the worst hitting team in the SEC. That's not surprising considering

ERA in SEC play 4.37 8th place
Season ERA 3.05 4th place

In SEC games only

Stratton 1.99
Graveman 3.32 (bad outing vs Auburn moved him from 1.88 to 3.32)
Reed 4.66
Mitchell 5.40 great outings vs LSU and Auburn, but gave up 4 ER in 1/3 inning vs Arkansas which accounts for over 4 points of his ERA.
Routt 6.97has earned a demotion as a result

8 other pitchers have combined for 10.1 innings. Those pitchers have a combinedERA of 8.71

From what I am seeing we still have chance to be good in pitching if we can find a replacement for Nick Routt and get Reed back into his groove from last season.

And should be noted that we have played two of the top three pitching teams already + an average Auburn pitching staff. Two of those series being on the road.<div>
