Cuba was fun. It was a three-hour direct flight from Windsor to Santa Clara, and we booked a week at an all-inclusive at Cayo Santa Maria for not quite $1,000 each (airfare, ground transportation, resort). The resort (Starfish) is owned by the Cuban military, as are most of the resorts on the island. It is separated from the mainland by a 30-mile causeway that is only 15 years old, so everything on the island is relatively new. They're building like crazy, too, but Cuba is not close to being ready for a million spring breakers. We met a few Europeans and South Americans, but the majority of guests were Canadians. We did not meet any fellow Americans, but of course our federal government in its wisdom still restricts our freedom to travel if the purpose is vacationing. I am a journalist (mostly retired) and did a piece on Remedios, a Cuban town that is observing its 500th anniversary this year. Remedios and Ann Arbor are sister cities, so it was a natural for a Michigan publication. And my wife went with a tentative deal from AARP the Magazine, so the First Amendment shielded us. That said, U.S. Customs and Border Protection gave us no problems at all. The agent at the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor wanted to know what we were bringing back from Cuba, and if we had bought anything in Canada, then welcomed us home and sent on us our way. Sooner or later, Congress will wake up and drown Cuba in capitalism. The amusing irony is that the fiercest critics of the freedom to travel -- Cuban-Americans -- are free to visit the island without restriction. It is only their fellow countrymen who cannot be trusted with the same liberty.
