I will explain it as best I can.

Florida State batting with two outs and a runner on second. We throw a pitch that bounces in the dirt, and their batter goes around for what should be the third out. It's called an out by the ump at home. Well, we run off the field and the FSU player at second and the batter keep running and score. Supposedly, if the ball bounces on a pitch, it's still a live ball regardless if the batter swings or not.

Rule #1 of Bulldog Athletics: If something crazy and unheard of can happen to ANY MSU sports team then it will.

There was 2 outs with a runner on second. Strike 3 was called on a check swing on a ball in the dirt. Our mistake was that our catcher didn't tag the runner, but the batter went back to the dugout and we ran off the field. Then, just as she got to the dugout, her teammates told her to run, so she took off and we watched as both runners rounded the bases and scored...and the ump let it go. The right call would have been to deem the batter out once she committed to going back to the dugout...but in FSU's defense, our catcher should have tagged her, and then we stood there and watched as they rounded the bases, instead of picking the damn ball up and tagging them out as they came home.

That was the first inning of softball I think I've ever watched, and due to that horseshit play and horseshit call by the ump....it will be my last. We're down 2-0 and that play will cost us the Regional. Even in softball we are reminded that "we are M-State".

what i don't understand

is 3rd threw it to first and we stopped her at first ...the play should have been dead there at 1-0, except we rolled the ball to the circle and then she just started running again when no one was left on the field... completely messed up!

Runners can run whenever they want, so long as time isn't called or a foul ball, right?

Sounds like the umps made the right call. In the replay, half of MSU's team was still on the field when the FSU girl took off to first. This one falls on the MSU coach who kept telling her players to get in the dugout when the ball was clearly still live according to the umps.

I think it was the right call. I believe the runner can advance to first as long as they haven't gone all the way back to the dugout.

Catcher should always tag the runner on anything questionable. No one to blame but our own players & coaches.

I don't fully know softball rules, but runners have to stop at base or commit to a base if pitcher has the ball within the circle. Otherwise they can keep advancing.

I just checked the NCAA softball rules,, on a dropped 3rd strike the batter-runner is not out until they enter the dugout (and leave field of play). After they reach 1st base safely however, the rule changes and if the runner even starts to walk back toward the dugout they are ruled out. They don't have to actually enter the dugout in that case.

If the runner on 2nd assumed there were 3 outs and started walking back to dugout, that runner should technically be out, but it doesn't sound like that happened.

Sounds like our catcher and coaches just screwed up.

**Edited to add I didn't watch game at all, just going off the descriptions.

On the batter gets to first base she is safe

So when we rolled the ball back to the circle and left the field, she can run all the way around until we tag her out or she scores. Just a stupid play on our part. Not the umpire's fault at all. Catcher should've tagged the batter. It's a Little League play that we screwed up and it cost us.
