How hard is it to put together a great team when you have that kind of bank? Granted, they had 17ed it up plenty of times before, and perhaps Old Man Steinbrenner should have turned things over to his bullheaded son a few years earlier.
Not to go Jason Stark on you, but they had better than $175 million tied up in the guys who started last night plus AJ Burnett. That total alone is more than the second highest payroll in baseball by more than $35 million. They already have more committed in next year's contracts than any team paid this year. Last night's team featured the top five highest paid baseball contracts not just of 2009, but of ALL TIME.
This offseason Damon, Matsui and Pettite are all free agents. Will the Yankees:
A) Buy them back
B) Let them walk and sign Matt Holliday, John Lackey and Jason Bay to take their place?
C) Sign them back AND sign Holliday, Lackey and Bay.
Yay for the Yankees. They won the World Series. What a group of players. I am sure there is tremendous satisfaction in dominating a league that allows competitive imbalance like MLB.
