not a Yankee fan, but it's hard for me to go against classy guys like Jeter, "Mr. Sandman", and Girardi. Nice game from Pettite too. Now back to college football!!!</p>

I don't like them one bit, but at least I don't see them rattling off a few in a row. Too many good teams. With that being said...GO CARDS 2010!

as far as MLB goes, which change would you like to see first? 1) A unified DH/no DH rule between the NL and AL, or 2) a MLB salary cap/collective bargaining agreement?

How hard is it to put together a great team when you have that kind of bank? Granted, they had 17ed it up plenty of times before, and perhaps Old Man Steinbrenner should have turned things over to his bullheaded son a few years earlier.

Not to go Jason Stark on you, but they had better than $175 million tied up in the guys who started last night plus AJ Burnett. That total alone is more than the second highest payroll in baseball by more than $35 million. They already have more committed in next year's contracts than any team paid this year. Last night's team featured the top five highest paid baseball contracts not just of 2009, but of ALL TIME.

This offseason Damon, Matsui and Pettite are all free agents. Will the Yankees:
A) Buy them back
B) Let them walk and sign Matt Holliday, John Lackey and Jason Bay to take their place?
C) Sign them back AND sign Holliday, Lackey and Bay.

Yay for the Yankees. They won the World Series. What a group of players. I am sure there is tremendous satisfaction in dominating a league that allows competitive imbalance like MLB.

and can't make the playoffs. Same with the team at #2, the Mets. Only 4 of the top 10 payrolls and 6 of the top 20 made the playoffs.

One thing that needs to be understood, none of these owners are scraping by. They are all multi-millionaires and billionaires. They could spend if they wanted to. Teams like the Pirates and Royals that are perennially terrible choose to be that way.

you think the Royals could pay Jeter, Sabathia, Tex, and A-Rod (just to name the huge money guys) and remain financially viable?

They are relative newcomers to the bloated payroll game, and clearly have a lot to learn. A group of blind monkeys could have written up smarter contracts than the ones lavished on Soriano, Zambrano, Dempster, and Fukodome.

coming from a fan of the team with the second highest payroll in the NL, and 3rd in baseball, yet couldn't sniff the playoffs. And I love if they resign Matsui or Damon they are buying them back. Of course they could do something dumbass and sign someone like Milton Bradley to a 30 million dollar contract

Well. first of all, this is not about the Cubs. They made stupid, terrible, dumb decisions and threw bad money after good last off season. They did win the NL Central two years in a row though prior to this year, which is about like winning the SEC West in hoops. While I would love for them to win ONE World Series, much less 27, if it happens because they outspend everyone for a 10 year period until they get it right, it will be a little less satisfying. I would still buy the t-shirt and probably change my sig though.

Congratulation to your team. They were clearly the best team this year. I just can't help but wonder how they would do if they had to worry about the payroll like most of the rest of MLB.

I will be the first to admit that there should be a salary cap in place, but let's be honest here, a lot of these owners could spend the money if they wanted to. The Yankees have proven over the last decade that you cannot just go throw money out there and bring home championships. Ever since Cashman has taken over it seems the money has been invested much better than the when George was doing it, and he has started to build the farm system back up. Something else they never did earlier this decade.
