4th down and punting. Snapper snaps it over the head of the punter and the ball is hanging out at your own 1.5 yard line. Defenders are approaching very quickly. Do you:

(a) Fall on the ball at the 1 and set up the other team with first and goal at your own 1 yard line?

OR

(b) Do what it takes to turn this bad situation into a safety.

Seems pretty obvious to me.

You're just figuring out he's a moron? When I was a kid, my grandad would mute the tv when he starting talking on MNF.

throw a pass in the direction of a teammate. incomplete pass, colts ball on the 50 or wherever that line was then.

It depends

Obviously if you have enough time to execute a successful incompletion, that's the play to make. But I'm not sure in the chaos of all that if there was anyone in the area even eligible as a receiver. So even if that play had been a forward pass instead of a fumble, it might have been intentional grounding, Indy ball on the 1 yard line. I seriously doubt the punter had time to assess the eligibility of those around him. I think you just have to kick it through the end zone and concede the safety.

But REGARDLESS, Dan Dierdorf's assessment that you fall on the ball at the 1 is not the correct answer.

No, I've known

Just restating the obvious. Although this was about as dopey of an analysis I've heard from him in some time. No more fitting way for him to go out though, I guess.

Dierdorff is the worst of the worst. Absolutely takes the fun out of watching a game.

Dierdorf IS a moron, but there is no way that punter was trying to give up the safety. I'm not sure what he was trying to do, but he was trying to move the ball forward and just got lucky the Colts knocked the ball through the endzone and only got a Safety. A Safety was probably better than giving the other team the ball at the 1, though.
