<p style="font-style: italic;">Here I provide another Croom post-game quote where he essentially affirmed a question I've had for years myself.</p> <p style="font-style: italic;">"The thing about offense, if one guy makes a mistake you've got a problem."</p> <p style="font-style: italic;">Which is exactly my issue all along. Forget titles and labels, that's meaningless. Mississippi State is trying to run an offensive system that demands NFL-class execution. Nothing wrong with that in itself at all, IF you have the right personnel with enough collective experience and earned confidence to do it at all 11 positions, almost all the time.</p>I've thought the same thing from the beginning....hell i never thought i would say this, but i wish we still had Lynn Amadee. He's an offensive genius compared to Croom.

Now, will Croom look himself in the mirror and realize that he's got to cut out the NFL mentality to this program. This is college football - 18 year olds who just want to play. There are plenty of college offenses that are productive that don't require all 11 guys to be playing with perfection on every play. It doesn't have to be that complicated!

The Kang pretty much said that in his comments that were in the CL.

Although this year our biggest problem by far has been the OL. I don't know if our OL schemes are straightforward or not.

I may be his only remaining fan at MSU, but during Sherrill's early reign, Brown took whatever we had and made an effective offense out of it, and unless your coaches can go out and recruit exactly the parts you need for your pet offense, that's what I think a college OC should always be about.

Our particular trouble is, the part most needed for our HC's pet offense is another 40 hours a week of practice time, and that's a pretty hard recruit to sign.

I would welcome Watson back in a second. He's innovative, imaginative, efficient.....you know, all the things that Croom/Woody are not.

was (is) an offensive genius. The man could do so much with what we had. He was not afraid to CHANGE his scheme based on talent and available healthy players every week!!!! I would love to see him come back and help us out of this huge hole we have committed ourselves to digging. We just might make it to China by the egg bowl!

but ANY OFFENSE you put in requires all 11 guys perfectly executing to be effective...

Even the "king of teasers" Coach 34 knows that.

I'd take Watson Brown back in a heartbeat. It's a shame he killed his career by taking the UAB job.

watson was my favorite msu oc and sleepy was my favorite qb...but....please keep in mind before you decide you want him back, that was almost 20 years ago........most times football catches up to you and sometimes passes you by....i loved him, but i don't want him back.....and before someone says he'd be better than what we have, i would agree, but i'm saying that we can do better....

Ugh.. that's crap. Spreading the field, misdirection, catching folks offguard and out of position has much more room for error than trying to block 8 guys within 4 yds of the line of scrimmage. Fooling a linebacker and a safety is just as effective if not more than blocking him.

I was just referring to the fact he killed his career when he took the UAB job. He could have gotten a halfway decent head coaching job somewhere if he'd just waited a year or two. He must be some kind of masochist coaching at both Vandy and UAB.

Any and All offenses require all 11 guys to execute for an offense to be efficient. Center, guards, tackles, qb, fb, hb, wr, and te if you disagree then you obviously have never played. Not saying I am an expert, just telling you this is EXTREMELY common knowledge held by anyone to have ever suited up. This being said the more complicated an offense is the more chances for missed assignments and therefore inefficient plays. Which brings us to why the WCO has to go in a state where we have trouble getting high school kids that can make an 18 on their ACT.

first of all i am glad you used the "you must have never played" argument. it shows your idiocy. second you stated in your first post that "ANY OFFENSE you put in requires all 11 guys perfectly executing to be effective...". I know this is splitting hairs but saying that perfect execution is necessary for effectiveness is ****. Perfect execution by all 11 players will lead to perfect offensive play. Blocks are missed, passes are thrown to the wrong receiver, penalties are earned, etc. by many "effective" offenses every Saturday during the fall.

mainly because of "The Stand"....and Michael Davis not touching the ball on 14 plays inside the 10, or something like that.....

The main part that Croom doesn't seem to understand based on his comments is that your players in college can't stick around more than 4-5 years tops, so it's not a good idea to teach something that takes at least 3 years to install.

Occasionally, you'll be able to have an offense like Wake Forest's where you have all 5th year seniors and 4th year juniors, but most of the time you're going to have some underclassmen. The 85 scholarship limit doesn't allow you to recruit loads of players and not play guys until their 4th and 5th years.

To me Watson's short fall was in the red zone. We'd move down to the five with one scheme, and then decide to go sideways.
But:
I'd take him back in a heart beat.</p>

with my experienced we moved the football all the time, even when people screwed up. Of course it's great to have all 11 executing blocks, routes, etc.- but if you think only the way an offense can move the ball is by perfect execution you must have watched a different sport. Are you sure it was American football? And thanks for listing all those positions, I almost forgot what they were.

I think everyone agrees this offense doesn't fit, and play calling is not working.

I've always been a fan of the HC being the CEO and managing his coordinators, who run the offensive and defensive shows themselves, and Watson did well in that position. With few exceptions, having a HC who is also the OC spells trouble, and not every OC can make the transition up the ladder.

Not every corporate vice president would do well if promoted to president, not even the good ones. Sometimes, the best VPs make the worst Presidents.

I think Cutcliffe demonstrated this principle well. He made lots of magic as an OC, but as a HC the associated BS broke him down.

from First article googled under Rich Rodriguez spread offense:

But it still boils down to basics, Rodriguez said.

"From an Xs and Os standpoint, the offense is really overrated," he said, "becasue it's still a matter of executing."

Now did he say in this quote it takes all 11 guys executing, of course not I can read just like you. But I guaran-damn-tee you if Rich Rodriguez was asked he would say it takes all 11 guys executing... The WCO sux for the type of scholar-athletes we have here in Mississippi no doubt about it. But to say you can move to the spread because it doesn't take all 11 guys executing is horse crap for lack of a better word. As far as my idiocy I should have said, 1. either you have never played or
2. you have never listened to any GOOD offensive coach because they will all say that it takes all 11 guys executing, in order for any offense to be effective. Simple as that.

Find me a quote by a coach that says you can have just 9 or 10 guys executing on offense and i would venture to say their record is worse than croom's.

my point is ROOM FOR ERROR. How much room for error is there with 8 in the box and everyone knows what's coming on 1st down? Zero. Spreading it out and mixing up the plays keeps defenses off balance- especially on 1st down, hence more room for error. Good play calling hides your weaknesses and utilizes your strengths- we score an F in this department.
