Defending the edges. Are we doing it right?

I've noticed that our DEs are using the 3 point stance and exploding toward the middle of the line instead of protecting the edges or pushing around the ends to reach the backfield. As a result, Auburn was able to stay in the pocket or option down the line to break out to the 2nd level. When I played (ages ago), the DE would almost always use the 2 point stance so as to use his speed to his advantage and keep the play contained on the edges. Does anybody know why the 3 point stance for the DE is the norm these days?
