Yeah, I totally agree. I hate to be a Scrooge right here at Christmas, but you can't let the terrible defense slide like it didn't happen. Bear in mind, this Bellarmine team scored 59 and gave up 104 against Georgia. They scored 85 on UK. They scored 47 in the 2nd half. I was hoping the defense would be improved in the 2nd half, as it was in the last 2 games, but it was worse. And all they were doing was back-cuts and straight line drives! I can't remember seeing a UK team give up so many layups in my life. It was practically a layup line in the 2nd half. Pathetic. And to add insult to injury, we were fouling over and over again. They made 26-30 from the FT line. Seeing those numbers, you'd think we were playing a top 10 team we had little chance of stopping. But it was just laziness and lack of effort, not moving our feet, not cutting off the drive, and then reaching and slapping arms and wrists on shots. It was one of the more pathetic displays of defense I've seen.
Now, as someone else here said, imagine if our normal shooting had continued in this game- it's a definite loss. Had you told me Kam Williams would make 8-10 from 3, I would have guessed we win by 30+.
I'll take the win, of course, but my good feelings about how improved this team has been and how this season has taken a significant turn for the better have been seriously dampered, and I sure do hate it.
Here's what I know- this team is pretty much unpredictable. They might give good effort or they might not. They might shoot and they might not. They might defend or they might not. I have a feeling this season is going to be a roller coaster of things that seem completely out of anyone's control. I know, it's Christmas. Why create a tempest in a teapot? I hear you. Early game. Weak opponent. Coming off our 2 best wins. If I were Mark Pope and my coaching future at my Alma mater depended on this team, I wouldn't be able to sleep.
