I think there may be a misunderstanding about fans who support a particular player/coach. I think it is really a matter of degree.
In terms of both the leading feuds now going on, I guess I have supported both Flood and Laviano. However, my primary reason for both was that I was hoping both would have success and that would mean victories for my team, Rutgers.
When GS abruptly left, any school would find themselves in a bit of a mess about his replacement. The fact that he not only left, but took a bunch of his favorite staff with him and you end up with what is left makes it worse. That they hired one of the guys who was left makes you wonder what they saw in him? But, I was hopeful that Flood would grow into the job and be a good choice.
Well, he inherited a pretty solid squad and was able to win enough games and bowl for awhile. Certainly not great years, but still hoping he would find his legs and get better. His inability to get top recruits was a serious sign that, for whatever reason, he wasn't able to convince those kids Rutgers was a great choice, even with the BIG as a selling point. But, I still hoped he would get better as it was obvious RU didn't want to spend any money.
With the absolute **** storm that has hit this program this year, it should be clear that it is time to part company with Flood. I don't dislike the man, he just can't do this job. So, I am no longer supporting him as I have in the past.

As for Laviano, I trusted the coaches to find the best guy to do the job. There is absolutely no substitute for real game action. Of course, the coaching staff had to make the decision between the two guys based on what they saw in practice. They picked Laviano and I supported their decision as I certainly have no right to doubt they know best. Had we not had the interesting start of the season with Rettig playing the first half and Laviano the second, I doubt many would have been so determined with their choice to continue the season. Both looked good that first game which only supported the reports of it being a virtual dead heat to be the starter. There is no sense in rehashing what has happened since then. The only thing is what about the rest of the season? If you agree with Flood, the answer is stay the course. If you do not agree, the most obvious answer would be to make some changes.
Let me say that I really feel badly for Laviano. None of this is his fault. Both guys were trying to be the starter. Only one guy was going to win and it is not inconceivable that this problem could be just as easily the total opposite of what we have. Nobody can absolutely guarantee that Rettig will be any better than what we are seeing now. But, I no longer support the Laviano decision and feel we should try another way.

The only wrong decision is not responding to the need to change.

I said it 1 million times, and I'll say it again, you do not, in any way, shape, or form, have to support a coach. Yousupport your program, you support your school, you support the team, until the bitter end, but supporting the coach, bottom line, is completely up to each individual when, how, and why, you supper him.

God sakes, man, don't resort to cannibalism...it's just a game.

Claiming people are supporting a coach without understanding of the administration behind them is a futile effort.

Damn beat me to it. Was just gonna post a pic of a bra as well before I saw this post. Oh well...
Was gonna go with an image of a steel athletic supporter at first, but couldn't find one and wasn't really interested in scrolling through pages of guys wearing jock-straps to find one. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
